East Pakistan was the eastern provincial wing of Pakistan between 1955 and 1971, covering the territory of the modern country Bangladesh. Its land borders were with India and Burma, with a coastline on the Bay of Bengal. East Pakistanis were popularly known as "Pakistani Bengalis"; to distinguish this region from the India's state West Bengal (which is also known as "Indian Bengal"), East Pakistan was known as "Pakistani Bengal".
East Pakistan was renamed from East Bengal by the One Unit scheme of Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammad Ali of Bogra. The Constitution of Pakistan of 1956 replaced the British monarchy with an Islamic republic. Bengali politician H. S. Suhrawardy served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan between 1956 and 1957 and a Bengali bureaucrat Iskandar Mirza became the first President of Pakistan. The 1958 Pakistani coup d'état brought general Ayub Khan to power. Khan replaced Mirza as president and launched a crackdown against pro-democracy leaders. Khan enacted the Constitution of Pakistan of 1962 which ended universal suffrage. By 1966, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman emerged as the preeminent opposition leader in Pakistan and launched the six point movement for autonomy and democracy. The 1969 uprising in East Pakistan contributed to Ayub Khan's overthrow. Another general, Yahya Khan, usurped the presidency and enacted martial law. in 1970, Yahya Khan organized Pakistan's first federal general election. The Awami League emerged as the single largest party, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party. The military junta stalled in accepting the results, leading to civil disobedience, the Bangladesh Liberation War and the 1971 Bangladesh genocide.

I would says the question about Bihari people & the answer given by the other person was ASSUMPTION. Not fact
Pakistan was made by Bengali's majority vote, But West Pakistan was giving top jobs to Bihari's more than the majority of the population (most likely because they spoke hindi, similar to urdu, but nothing like bengali, hence language becomes very important), Majority inhabitants was being side lined in all area's. But the formation committee conference was done by Bengali in Dhaka. Bihari's were workers bought by the British to work in Bengal, this is not to say Bihari's should have a standing or jobs in East Pakistan. However the Pakistan's governments recruitment policy was to racist Bengali's which you can find in hidden for generations public enquirer report done by Justice Hamidur Rahman.
This unwavering support by west Pakistan to Bihari's paid dividends once the freedom of Bangla movement took place, they are the traitors who took the military regime to houses of people where they killed & raped. In the eye's of Pakistan, they were supporter of Pakistan & in the eye's of Bangladeshi's they were state terrorist, spies & traitors during war time who were doing Pakistani dictators bidding. One's hero & others adversary.

@@karllholstedder6099 I personally oppose the 3 language policy of India too since that undermines many major languages spoken by 10s of millions with vast literature & history of their own, 3 language policy of India also has big flaws which is why there has been huge anti hindi movements & still the opposition hasn't gone away. That's why I don't see native provincial languages having to share their provinces with a non native language as good either. In fact many are now rightly demanding equal status for their languages on national level that are currently used only on State levels. I see Ethiopia, Switzerland, Singapore, South Africa, etc as comparatively better models for linguistic policies.

Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan) had no issue with Biharis. In fact there is still a lot of Biharis in Bangladesh, living happily there. It was the truculence and snottiness of Punjabis, especially Punjabi soldiers, that divided the country.
As far as the language is concerned, you do not have to be Bihari in order to speak Urdu. I am from old Dhaka (the place that played a very important role in the institution of Pakistan), and my forefathers used to speak in Urdu. Many people in Bangladesh, till date, speak in Urdu, and a huge number of people understand this language. The grapple between Urdu and Bangla, could well be sorted, in fact some initiatives had already been taken.
I live in Switzerland, and the more I see the diversity of this country, the more I get amazed. This small country stands tall with pride and outright unanimity, despite of having 4 different national languages with 4 different cultures and ethos. See, you gotto be true-hearted to your nation.
Succinctly, it was the mentality of ‘being superior’ of the then West Pakistan, which cost us the partition. Truth must be divulged.

East Pakistan and West Pakistan should have been separate countries from the very beginning in August 1947. Leaders of Pakistan were not shrewd enough to realize that two countries, 1000 miles apart, with different linguistic and cultural realities ---- heck,how can these two different lands,could be One Country. It was a geigraphical stupidity. Yes these 2 separate lands were a part of one country, INDIA---- but the geographical reality of Pakistan was ---- that these 2 lands were so far geographically apart.

I feel that Pakistan should reform land ownership. 90% farmland is owned by only 10% population (so called Choudhry). Almost 90% landless farmers are working on this farmland as labours/slaves. This is inhuman! Please return this farmland to these landless farmers, they will be more interested to introduce quality farming, they will cultivate 2 crops in a year (right now it's one). I am a Muslim Indian from the south Indian state Kerala. I was 1st year BA student when the civil war started in East Pakistan subsequent on the general election of Pakistan in 1970. The military junta, the bureaucracy and establishment, western wing leader power hungry Bhutto and Eastern wing leader sheik Mujib Rahman who was once the prime accused in the Agartala conspiracy case were all had played their nefarious role in the break up of their own country in 1971. However if there was No India Pak war in 1971, certainly the political crisis emanated could have been resolved through peaceful manner in favour of the political party that got comfortable majority in that election. As a result of this war the present day Bangladesh is the big loser. They have lost their legitimate right over each and every inches of their former western wing comprising of 4 provinces and having more than 6 times larger land area than their present country for ever. Whereas Pakistan had lost only one of their provinces. This is the net result of the crisis. Both are losers. The winner and victorious is my country. Jay Hind.

1. We, most of the Bengalies are very liberal and open minded. We love to stay together with any community in the world, provided they have the humanity feelings.
2. To our surprise, we have seen Pakistan (East + West) was created on the basis of Religion !!! We cannot believe that Religion is a factor to create a separate nation. But it was created and this fact is well known to the whole world.
3. Process of fighting and gaining more power did not stop. Now West Pakistan grabbed the upper hand and started dominating East Pakistan.
4. East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) is a very furtile land and used to produce huge crops. But the main profit used to go to West Pakistan.
5. East Pakistan was populated mainly by Bengalies (Muslims + Hindus). They used to follow Bengali culture, speak Bengali language which was not digested by their Western big brothers. Western big brothers wanted to impose their culture and language to their Eastern brothers by hook or crook.
6. West Pakistan used to think they are the whole sole owner of the full Pakistan. They had grabbed full political and military power leaving no share or very little share for their Eastern brother.
7. East Pakistan, under the able leadership of Shaik Mujib-ur-rahman could not tolerate this injustice. So the language movement started.
8. In the first-ever general election held in Pakistan since its independence, Awami League, led by Sk. Mujib-ur-Rahman won 162 seats out of total 300. So legally he supposed to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. But it did not happened. Western brothers (Political +Military) did not want a Bengali PM.
9. Now unrest started in East Pak against the West. West. To suppress this Western big brother President Yahya Khan sent military to East and the world's largest and most terrified genocide started against Bengalies.
10. Thereafter what happened, I hope everybody knows that. Bengalis were tortured, killed, raped in inhuman ways. Animals were better than those Western killers. Very shame. This killing and torturing quality is always seen in a huge number of Western brothers. It is a shame to humanity.
11. Terrified Bengalies were running for lives to India. Tremendous human load came on India. But India being an open hearted kind country did not refuse. It tried it's best to help those distressed people.
12. Pakistan military attacked India on the charge that India is helping the "Mukti Bahini" (Independence Fighters). And finally Pakistan lost the war, India won and a new country is created "Bangladesh" in place of East Pakistan.
And i'm a student of this college now😊

Please elaborate. What according to you was the history. We Pakistanis by n large accept that people of east Pakistan should hv been talked to, they should hv been given maximum autonomy if this is what they were asking for. Pakistani Army killed more than 300k people in Dhaka . You don't know the proper history. Pakistani people only believe that India and non muslim Bangalis were responsible for the separation of this two country. But you people don't know the real History. Almost 3 million people were murdered and raped by Pakistani Army during the liberation war in 1971 . Only West Pakistani politicians were responsible for those blunder.
