This is a palace. The emperor has over 70 concubines. If she has ugly stretch marks, the emperor won't be attracted to her any longer. If she loses the emperor's favour, she will be treated like dirt in the palace.
Looks matter in a palace like that. There are many concubines, constantly competing for the Emperor's favour. Stretch marks are seen as a hideous blemish and Emperor's were all shallow as fuck. So, yes, it is like a terrible illness. This is Ancient China, not a privileged modern world. We are truly privileged to live in this day and age. Today, most people with stretch marks aren't treated any differently to how they were before getting them, but here, being "flawed", like having marks on the skin, etc, will put you into a bad position and you will be treated like a pile of shit in the palace. Thank god I was born in 1995 and not around in the days of old. Women especially were treated horribly back then, regardless of which country they were from.
