The clip has very bad translation and does not go all the way to the moment when she divorces. It hampers good understanding. It could be cut better, to show the build-up in the relationship turning toxic because of the excessively controlling husband whose jealousy had been kindled by a stupid move by Meigui to let him and former lover meet. That was as if she had slapped him in the face out of the blue and wanted to rub it in to both guys that Fang was her rebound option and she was marrying him only to escape Zhuang Guodong. Her second love started on wrong footing because she had not been wholehearted, only using Fang whom she saw as offering comfort, to get over her nightmares. She did fall in love with him over his playing hero and accepting her help to restart a career, independently, and letting her teach him how to swim literally and symbolically. Fang was appalled that she had twisted thoughts coming into their relationship, and that sting would stay with him forever. So, his narcissist tendencies mixed with low self esteem prevented him from breaking off at or following marriage. Instead, he started to build mental prison walls around her to keep his only rose and goddess away from further worldly temptations. Before that, he had been more open and willing to go to Beijing with her to get married and perhaps be better appreciated by the Huang family despite the difference in status : he had won over his mother in law's approval, and found SuSu as Meigui's best friend, to be of good counsel to him and her. After meeting ZGD, and feeling himself despised by Meigui's brother and suspected by her father, he knew he needed to stay away from the Beijing family (at least until he became so wealthy that they would have to accept him as something like an equal). He focused on his career and built the material environment for his couple, in the hope that Meigui would change, obey him as the recognized dominant one, and they might at least share relaxed meals together. Meigui, on reflection, accepted that his decisions were in their best interests. Fang's rash move to resign Meigui's job (while she was recovering from a fainting spell, and so it would not be possible for her to over-exert and risk miscarriage from work and commuting), still became a thorn in their marriage, and he went on to repeat it again later. That was when it became a reason for her to expose loss of trust, loss of love, and divorce. Adding to her hardships was the impossible communication between Meigui and her mother-in-law whose values were poles apart : the Korean mom was a classic drama toxic one, only interested in son, money, and getting a grandson, and openly despising her daughter-in-law for "frivolity", further adding to Fang's suspicious mind with her piques about Meigui buying flowers and reading books. Fang Xiewen did not completely accept everything his mom said ; he had told his mom several times that Meigui was not a house maid for him or her, that he had brought her (his mom) in to help and care for them and not the reverse (he brought her in not only because it was cheaper, but also thinking that trusting her was better than trusting an unknown caretaker since his mom was, after all, family -even if he did not admire her). He told his mom that foreign language Meigui could not understand should not be used in front of his wife or his wife's parents, that the Korean mom should not show her negativity about the small purchases that Meigui did. Fang Xiewen had been frank about Meigui having helped him financially with his startup, but was influenced by his mom's insistence that he keep his earnings secret from her. She had raised him in her scheming and suspicious mindset, with her awareness that she was just a low educated waitress, and that her family should not look to compete with haughty Beijing people. Thus, she had been feeding his low self esteem until he broke free and went to Shanghai to study with a clear professional goal. There, Fang Xiewen had found that he not only could consider job opportunities, but also a romantic attachment to someone who struck him as admirable and lovely. Meigui could teach him to think beyond the box, find new ways to use his qualities of decisiveness and attention to details, open up other fields of knowledge for him, and be his one and only treasure. He was aware that he applied a computer scientists "programming" mindset in his methodical pursuit of her, whereas she was applying a spontaneous and free artist's view of the world, but he was deeply admiring of that and wanting these traits to become complementary and even merging for them both. He offered her security and waited respectfully for her approval instead of crowding her and subduing her physically as her first love had, and that was also why she had fallen for him. Nevertheless, Fang Xiewen was open enough about his success to talk with Meigui about purchasing a big house in addition to the expansion of his company into a more desirable and expensive district. He asked and accepted her monetary help also on the understanding that everything he earned and accrued after marriage was their lawful in-common property. But he wounded her when he told her that he had not been counting on her meager salary to support their household (to him, this was pocket money that belonged to her and that she could freely use to buy flowers, books, sign up for internet classes, buy clothes, eat what she liked best, but he was ready to give her money if she asked for it or wanted some thing ; she was too proud to beg, though). His narcissism flared up when he found that she used make up, nail polish, and wore skirts away from home, when she had almost given up on this self-care when staying at home. (Women should never give up on self-care, however tight money is : that's a sign of transforming from independence and admirable goddess to dependent slouch and slob, which causes loss of respect from partners.) That triggered him into building higher mental walls when they should have been lowered, cyber stalking her and hindering her next job offer : a serious mistake in his algorithm that finally caused the "program" to crash beyond salvation. Lin Gengxin played remarkably that difficult and unpleasant role, growing from shaggy dog like pitiful student appearance to better groomed handsome president of his upstart business (focus of this clip), while Liu Yifei even without make up still looked as lovely a rose in distress as her role was designed to be. The actress who played the Korean mom was perhaps less skillful although she managed easily to achieve her character to be hated by audience.
