Building an Heirloom Walnut Shaker Side Table | FREE Plans!

- In this video, I show how I designed and built a shaker style side table out of solid walnut. This table is built to last, and I look forward to passing it down through future generations of my family.
The table has classic tapered legs, uses mortise and tenon joinery, and includes no fasteners other than three screws to attach the table top (to allow for seasonal wood movement) and a store-bought drawer pull. The drawer body is made of maple, with a floating 1/4" plywood bottom. The drawer slides are also made of maple, for durability.
I finished the table by sanding down to 400 grit and applying four coats of Arm-R-Seal. This build took a total of about 10 hours spread over several days.

If you don't have Sketchup to view the plan, here is an overview of the dimensions of the table:
Top: 16" x 22" x 3/4"
Legs: 1.5" x 1.5" x 25 1/4", tapers are on the inside two faces of each leg, making the legs 1" square at the bottom, and the taper stops about 8" from the top of the leg
Stretchers: two are 10.5" x 5" x 3/4", two are 16.5" x 5" x 3/4"
Drawer face is 16.5" x 3", and the drawer itself is about 10" deep

Beautiful! Im working on something very similar right now. One of the big differences is that I use half blind dovetails on the top drawer rail instead of mortise and tennon, just so its stronger. That bottom rail can act as a pivot point and pull that top mortise out if someone accidentally bumps the front leg too hard. I really like the size of yours though. Good proportions.
Very cool, thanks for sharing! Half blind dovetails there are an interesting idea. If I re-made this table today I would definitely use half blind dovetails on the drawer itself, but hadn't thought about it on a rail. I appreciate the idea! Let me know how yours turns out!

This is exactly what I'm looking to build for my bedroom. I have opened the file in Sketchup but I only see a rendering of the side table. Is there a way to get an actual cut list?

You should be able to get a 3D rendering and move it around and measure pieces with the tape measure tool... but for an actual cut list, no I didn't make one unfortunately (don't know how to be honest! I always just design in sketchup then transfer the measurements to pencil and paper to build the thing). Sorry about that!

Did you joint both sides of that board on the jointer?
Good question! No, I jointed two sides on the jointer to get exactly a 90 degree angle, then I used the planer for the other two sides.
Impressive. Really. If you want a router jig to make mortises, and just routing in general, easier, check out the Samurai Carpenters vid. Seriously nice piece of furniture and excellent video skills. Some of those camera angles really help bring the viewer into the workshop with you. Oh and extra points for the puppy :)

Dude you didn't try very hard to solve your problem before complaining. Try sketchup make 2017, it isn't a trial version. help.sketchup.com/en/downloading-older-versions

You may want to rethink having music all throughout your videos. Most ppl want to hear the tools/shop sounds, not music
or endless talking as seen by reading the comments on woodworking/restoration channels with multiple 100k's subscribers.
Thanks for the comment, Dan! Totally agree. I stopped putting music and/or voice overs in my videos a few months ago, this is an older one. The newer ones are much better received!
