  • So I have been making my DIY Laundry Detergent for years. I have altered my recipe through the years. In this recipe I use the following:
4 Pound box of Baking Soda
    Super Washing Soda
    Borax
2 boxes of shredded Zote (500g)
    1.3 pound Oxiclean
    **********************************
I added 1lb 12 oz OUT White Bright
    amzn.to/28V3fpw
(disclaimer: not sure how this will turn out yet!)

I make the same but I mix the zone flakes with some baking soda in my ninja mixer (makes the soap into a powder) Then mix it all in the big container. Works in HE measuring basket, no gumming up of the machine. Going on 3 years with no issues. Love the stuff.
Save more: I found out that two mini buckets of Awesome (DT knock off of oxyclean) for 2 dollars at dollar tree makes it even more affordable.

I've made this and love it! I've added the whitener and it works great on my hubby's work shirts. ..you should see the crazy materials he comes home covered in! (construction )
one thing I also like to add is with a scented or unscented ebson salt. it's way cheaper then buying those fragrance boosters (not that ZOTE doesn't already small nice, I just like the scent of lavender). plus the ebson salt helps soften hard water.
I recently made liquid detergent for the first time. only been using it for a few days. it might take a long time to make, but I really like it better than the dry version. why? because I only use ONE bar of ZOTE ,ONE cup of BORAX and ONE cup of Arm & Hammer washing soda and it makes 5 gallons! still only use 2 tablespoons per load. that's less than $5 for 5 gallons of laundry soap! BONUS : it can also be used for dish soap and works great for cleaning floors and stove tops!
I have to say, I really appreciate all the amazing uses for ZOTE!!
thanks for your quick video, I think my reply takes longer to read! Hahaha

It is not recommended to use Epsom salt in washing machines, as it's magnesium which makes your water into hard water, which everyone has hard water to some extent - people with wells typically have really hard water, while city folks don't have it as bad, but adding Epsom salt to the washer is going to make city water like well water and well water even harder than it already is, this is not going to soften clothes what so ever Which apparently is the new thing online people making their own fabric softeners and laundry boosters with Epsom salt thinking it's going to soften their clothes when they're doing the opposite in reality

Hardness depends on where the water is sourced. It’s harder mid continent acs softer sling the E and W coasts.

I have made the liquid laundry soap and it works well, but is a lot more trouble and time consuming. I have been making the powder for a couple of years. My recipe is similar and it lasts the 2 of us about a year. So under $20 for a year! that is a deal.

I use a recipe that I got from janie pendleton and it 3 cups borax, 3 cups washing soda, I only use a cup of oxi clean, and a cup of baking soda also I make both powder and liquid because honestly I like making it. lol but when I make powder version I also add scent boosters only half of one though.

I used a large (gallon size) glass pickle jar but i let it sit full of baking soda & vinegar water overnight to kill the smell. (It works for coffee as well) i think it must be the difference between plastic & glass. I reuse a lot of household jars & such but i buy fewer 'new' products now so i have been trying to get innovative. Most of the cleaners in spray bottles already have strong scent so as long as it is cleaner i don't worry too much about that- just don't mistakenly reuse the bleach for the ammonia!
      (Or vice versa)
The ones i like best are the 1 gallon ice cream pail (plastic, but with lid & handle) for the dry laundry powder. & the 2 pound potato salad container with lid. Not too pretty but they get the job done & keep it sealed well. The potato salad one had a particularly strong smell at first but it has been used for so many things over the years that it soon lost that.

So do you mean that the flakes have less water? I have both and now I think that's the case. 500 GM flakes = 800 GM bar style. Because water is removed from the flakes.

When I started out I made granulated. But I soon realized I get more bang for my buck doing liquid. I have a five gallon bucket full of the powder. When my liquid runs out I use from that mixture to make more. I use 2.5 cups to make 5 gallons. I tweaked genius in exiles recipe. I'm not sure when it will actually run out because I keep adding shredded up bar soap ends because I hate to waste them

For about 10 years I made the dry mix with Felsnaptha, washing soda, and borax. But, sometimes m clothes would get bleached like spots. So this last year I make liquid with 1 bar of Zote, borax 1/2 box, and liquid oxyclean (1/2 bottle). It makes 5 gallons and lasts about five months for a family of nine. I also use abou 1/8th a cup and put vinegar in the rinse. My clothes are super soft and smell great! Thank you Trish, for all your great videos. Super helpful and encouraging!

Oxiclean releases hydrogen peroxide in water. It decomposes thereafter you water and oxygen. Your liquid concoction had no bleaching capability.

Do you realize how dilute that is? 14 oz of soap in 5 gal is only 0.175 oz of soap/cup of your concoction. 1/8 cup per load = .02 oz of soap/load. That’s 1/4 the weight of a dime! Or less than half the weight of a paper clip! Use plain water instead!!!!

I do a very similar recipe. I grate my own Zote and let it dry on a cookie sheet for a day or two. I think the dry weight is likely very close to that of one box. I mix it by hand and process the entire mixture in a food processor a cup or two at a time. I then add to bucket and mix one more time. Even with the extra steps I take I have months worth of laundry detergent in about 10 minutes. Smells great and cleans 🧼 great too.

+322msg when I used to cook up the liquid years ago, I always made a mess. I am not sure if the brighter is making them brighter, but they smell like nothing, and in my book that says CLEAN. We don't really do smells and there is no lingering product smells. Not that there is ever a lot anyways. Also the feel of the clothes is cleaner. But I am not sure if it is really a subconscious thing in my head, probably a statistic electric charge from the position of my Mohawk hair picking up, that the feel is softer. Hahaha, I am not sure I answered you. But I will keep adding it, I think it is a great addition to the recipe. Btw, I have been in laundry de-Nile, you know like a vacation home on the river of de-Nile, on getting laundry done, so I am on laud 9 today.

It’s like Oxiclean so can be mixed. It contains sodium percarbonate, which releases hydrogen peroxide in water.

In the good old days they washed their clothes in urine. The one of a preacher was considered best.

What old days was that? Because soap recipes go back tens of thousands of years. Urine was one of the things that they were trying to remove.

Baking soda does nothing to make your concoction “better”. It’s just partially neutralized washing soda. It’s not an effective water softener. It’s just a filler as you use it. Omit it and save $.
This isn’t a detergent because the only surfactant is bar soap.
That white bright product sounds like it contains sodium percarbonate, the same active ingredient as in Oxiclean.
