  • With Mercedes winning every F1 championship since 2014, it's easy to forget that there were plenty of times in the past when title-winning teams would get it wrong and slip from the top of the mountain. In this video, Glenn Freeman looks back at 10 times this happened, from dominant forces that lost their mojo, to teams that got it right for one year then instantly fell back into the pack.

Mercedes, in it's due diligence, is putting out dominating car after dominating car. At the same time, both Ferrari and Red Bull (the only two teams who can realistically do something about it à la McLaren and Williams vs Ferrari back in the 2000's) have dropped the ball - *hard* in the forme'rs case.
Since the FIA doesn't seem to be willing to put some brakes into any of that, as they did before, I might actualy say that we might have to wait until they just get tired and ze germans decide that it's no longer worth it to have an F1 team.

In a year McLaren had intense fighting between its two drivers, and considering the number of poles Piquet scored, Brabham BMW missed out on the chance for a back to back championship. It seems interesting to me how the 2009 McLaren and Ferrari scenario might repeat. Imagine if RedBull brings their A-game in 2021 to fight Mercedes for the Championship and both teams are stuck in a title fight to the very end of that season. With budget cap they won't have enough resources to develop both 2021 and 2022 cars simultaneously, which will obviously affect their new regulations-spec car. Therefore, there is a chance for an other, better prepered title contender team.
Normally I would say that Toto would not let that happen, beastmode boss he is, but since he is said to be on a verge of leaving his current post, who knows?
RedBull is not to sign off as a next year's contender either, they keep developing their 2020 car to better undestand the 2021 project, which is virtually the same car. so who knows?
You heard it here first. Love to you all!

It's 2023 and Mercedes only managed 1 win since the 2021 Abu Dhabi title decider and currently has fewer podium finishes than Fernando Alonso. The only silver lining is they always score points in the races they finish, keeping them ahead of Aston Martin and Ferrari. Meanwhile, Red Bull is now dominating as harder than they have before with Max having a decent chance to beat Vettel's win streak record and Red Bull already equaling McLaren's win streak record.

2013 McLaren was a bit disappointing. Finishing 2012 with the fastest car, and with a step-change in 2014 coming with the hybrids, the expectation was to evolve the 2012 car into 2013 and show Hamilton how wrong he was to leave. However that isnt The McLaren Way. Clean sheet of paper at the drawing board for a single season, and theyve been playing catchup just about ever since.

From what I know 2021 drop off was due to some flooring regulation that basically closed the gap from Red Bull in 2020, who had a competitive car at the end of the that year. They still won the constructors last year and had a better package in a slight majority of races then Red Bull. I guess they just didn’t get it right for the new regulations. Porpoising like crazy, but I have heard they have good corner speed. I wonder what happened to their German engineered super engine

It's interesting to see the parallels between McLaren/Ferrari in 2008/2009 with Mercedes/Red Bull in 2021/2022. Competitive title fight directly before a major rule change leaves the prior title challengers on the back foot. However, it seems that the Red Bull's and Mercedes' issues this year are relatively fixable (Mercedes needing to solve their aero issues and Red Bull needing to make their engines from something other than glass), unlike the fundamental issues that hampered McLaren and Ferrari in 2009.
