    I love almost all of the edits, apart from NX-07's name. You see, the first seven NX class ships were named after space shuttles. You had Enterprise (NX-01), named after a test shuttle, NX-02 to NX-06 named after the shuttles that flew to space, and NX-07 named 'Intrepid', after a full mock-up. I don't think that NX-08 has a canonical name (I could be wrong), so she could well be the 'Prospect'.

    I sooo wish this had been the actual NX-01 design for the show. Something about it looks so natural and easy on the eyes. The swept back nacelle pylons were one of the major elements that made it look not era appropriate to me. The original design looks more like a TOS movie era refit of this design.

  • @TheJLF65
    @TheJLF65 Před 5 lety +3

    There actually was a legitimate reason for the swept pylons in TMP - it allowed them to extend the shuttle bay. If you watch the scene were a pod enters the shuttle bay, it's far larger than in TOS, and that's entirely due to moving where the pylons attach to the secondary hull. They couldn't move the warp nacelles further forward, hence, swept pylons.

    So, there was actually a semi-official retrofit design that was supposed to look like a middle-ground between ENT and TOS in a different way, which would have added a secondary hull very similar to that of the Constitution Class (complete with copper deflector dish) and would have extended the pylons through the struts and into the secondary hull.
    While it was made by the people who made the official NX-class model, there were never any plans to actually include the refit in the series, but commercially-available model kits of it were made and the NX-refit has appeared in later official materials.

    This is a solid interpretation for a TOS style NX ship.
    Your catamaran hull struts when they're straight looks pretty good, but I get what you're saying about loosing the shape of the NX. Have you thought of flipping those struts to be on the ventral part of the ship, keeping the pylons and nacelles in the same orientation? It would make allow the saucer to feel a little more independent of the warp engine apparatus while still feeling NX-y. Also, why couldn't the deflector array systems be in that front box section of the NX instead of behind the three windows in the front of the saucer?

    NX-01 was named Enterprise after the first shuttle. NX-02 is Columbia after the second shuttle. Presumably, this continued, with NX-03 Challenger, NX-04 Discovery, NX-05 Atlantis, and NX-06 Endeavour. I believe the book named the NX-07 Intrepid after one of the shuttle ground mock-ups, but there is one other shuttle that actually flew in space: the Soviet shuttle, Buran. I think NX-07 Buran is a pretty good name.

    Did you know in STO (Star Trek: Online) thanks to their new-ish "Legendary Ship pack" you can make something semi-close. The ship gets both the NX & beta-cannon NX-refit choices AND a new one (Columbia-class) the saucer is more rounded & has the deflector built into the ram-scoop-thing.
    If you know someone who has the ship in STO PC ask them to use: reg-NX secondary hull, NX-refit nacelles, with Columbia saucer & pylons draped in TOS era skin... I mean you still get stuck with the warp field regulator & the Columbia saucer extends back a bit between the pylons but it is semi-close.

    My head canon for why the NX-01 Enterprise was so panely is because it was never painted beyond the name. They were still replacing and reinforcing hull segments less than a week before launch, why would they paint something they knew that they might need to replace a couple days later. It’s brought up a lot early on that the Enterprise launched ahead of schedule, and they didn’t go back to dry dock until early season 3 (maybe end of season 2, I don’t remember) and that was specifically to quickly optimize and update her combat systems before sending her off to war.

  • @ashleydarkstone1949
    @ashleydarkstone1949 Před 7 lety +31

    Not sure why it needed to be closer to the TOS aesthetic, it's from 100 years prior to the Constitution-class. For the purposes of your film, sure. But you shouldn't bash the design because it isn't more TOS-looking. Doug Drexler put a lot of thought into the design and functionality of the NX-class, and it's worth looking into his comments on it, or even talking to him about it directly. And to explain some of the parts that you've mentioned... The scoop on the top is a matter intake. The warp pylons, while swept back, have a somewhat raised narrower part which is what Doug preferred the pylons to be, because it was a nod to how advanced Trek tech is, where you can have a narrow pylon like that connected to these huge engines. This was before the executive meddling bulked them up more, but he kept that part distinct from the rest of it. The shape of the booms extending aft conform roughly to the shape of the saucer from a profile view. It curves then slopes like the saucer. It also gives a good amount of clearance to the observation dome in between them.
    And just a few other comments... I know you were going for a low-detail look, but where are the docking ports and sensors? And you made the rest of the ship more TOS, but then actually made the nacelles way less TOS than they were. Doesn't make much sense if you're trying to justify the changes, but I get that you're making it more in-line with your film's aesthetic and functionality too. I think you should probably learn a bit more about the details before you make changes to them though. Especially when a lot of thought went into them, and you seem to discard them on a whim.

      Wow. just Wow.
      For everyone who does not have the time read the above essay it on a most basic and extremely simplified level boils down to: You changed it! You shouldn't have done that because everything Doug Drexler designs is PERFECT!!!!!!!.

    • @integrazimmy
      @integrazimmy Před 6 lety +3

      Alexander Wills I don't think you understand the purpose of these comments. Sure, some people blow off steam much like yourself, but the points that +Ashley Darkstone made were valid. See, the reason for the commenting is so that the owner of the channel can listen to feedback and take these comments into consideration and make the necessary changes in order to make his film a hit!!! Let me put it to you this way, a chef who swears at every client for disliking his food isn't a chef. A REAL chef MUST listen to feedback or risk going out of business. After all... He is there to cook for others for a living, not for himself. And I'm not saying he's here for profit, but if he really wants to give fans something they'd wanna come back for, he needs these comments. A person in a picture can't see everything on a macro level, but the fans can help with that in a subtle way. I don't believe your rage to be justified. Just stick to opinions without the firing of photon torpedoes at the first sign of what you believe to bad trouble for Erick Henry. If you respect others, others will respect you!!! Besides... Isn't the Start Trek universe about becoming better people???

    Nice job! Sharp edges and gentle curves. Amen. I think your interpretation of the NX of the 'future' is entirely consistent and believable. I often thought the original design was overdone, not just with surface detail and texturing, but with all those disharmonious curves!
    I think you could have gone with the alternative version you did, as well - the one with the straight catamaran hulls instead of the original curved ones. Your justification is obvious - look what happened to the Enterprise. It went from 90 degree pylons to slanted, the 'neck' was completely different, the saucer changed shape - so I think straightening out the catamaran hulls would be a minor change in the grand scheme of things. It could easily be explained by saying that, just as they removed the warp field stabiliser, so they were able to tidy up and rationalise the general layout of the ship as technology and understanding improved.

    Also: there IS an NX refit (renamed the Columbia class), it's got a full secondary hull slung from both the pontoons and the saucer memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Columbia_class

    7:55 I really like your straight-pylon version of this ship! In fact, I really like all of your Pacific-201 designs. If I had the power, I'd have you design all the ships for Star Trek Discovery. This is exactly the kind of thoughtful soft reboot that fans would appreciate.

    I'm gonna say I like your other version of this better. The pylons look much more TOS. And in my opinion doesn't interfere too much with the original NX-Enterprise at all. I think if you make a TOS version of NX-Enterprise then you have to go all out or nothing at all. That said I believe you absolutely _NEED_ something between the nacelles. To leave it blank like that suggests you've missed something. A nice big warp field governor is _very_ TOS and it is a shame nothing is there. You could use pacific and TOS style to make it look bulky and primitive, It would look great! The turrets definitely need to be round, and id say bulk up the satellite dish. Don't make it any bigger just make it thick to suggest it sticks awkwardly into the warp field and needs reinforcement. It would also make it look old too! Also you could add some antenna sticking out of the end of that rounded rectangle where the big 07 is. Just some extra old navel add-ons to make it look pre-TOS.
    That said I think you did a great job and would love to see another one based on your alternate design of this ship!

    Yeah, you are right. Having the struts go straight back, looks a WHOLE LOT better and makes more sense.
    Might have considered them as more of NX-02? Then it wouldn't be so tied down to the Enterprise universe.

    What I keep hearing, over and over, is "I love TOS, so I changed everything else to look like it." I like what you did with your Pacific class concept, overall, but I didn't feel that some of the changes to the NX were warranted or appropriate. Your Daedelus update seemed sensible enough.

    This is really fantastic work. I've always really like Enterprise's, aesthetic because it seemed like something that matched the modern "forms over function" look of spacecraft today with something that could believably become TOS. I've always loved the real world naval look on starships, yellow and white checkering, red warning strips, and black lettering on gray with spinning dishes and antenna. It's something I always thought BSG and Stargate did very well, so I'm very excited to see star trek vessals with that treatment. Did you see the concept art of what an NX refit would look like released by the original designers? They added a separate engineering hull and it's also pretty interesting in modernizing the NX into the TOS Era.

    Having the pylons go straight back like that does break the Nx design a little bit. It looks too much like the Akira class.

      @TheEmeraldMenOfficial Před 3 lety +1

      I don’t think so. It’s the basic shape of NX-class vessels that does it for me: the sleek, narrow look of a Sovereign/Intrepid, but the clunkier feel of the Constitution/Miranda. Don’t get me wrong, I love the TOS era ships: I just prefer late TNG ships to them as they look like they’re designed to pierce space like an arrow or bullet, unlike TOS which is designed mostly to look odd to a 21st century eye, and doesn’t look sleek or aerodynamic by design.

    • @TheEmeraldMenOfficial
      @TheEmeraldMenOfficial Před 3 lety

      @@TwinPeaksIndustries The movie ones held up much better, but TOS is a product of its time. They weren’t kidding when they said the crew of the Enterprise was boldly going where no man had gone before: it featured some big milestones in TV, including the first interracial kiss (keep in mind it was the sixties). That lore’s been written for 55 years. It should be left as it was a generation ago, not screwed with by CBS or Abrams. At least Abrams had the decency to use an alternate timeline and CBS had the balls to take Discovery 1100 years into the future to the time of the Enterprise-J (which I hope will make a comeback somehow).

    Could you please do an NX-01 Pacific 201 Enterprise and just go crazy with whatever you want to do to make the ship look good in your universe. I’d love to see that.
    If lore is needed, you could say that after the Romulan war, there isn’t a new Enterprise yet and the original, though dramatically refitted, is still doing its part for StarFleet, even if it does usually serve in more minor roles, but StarFleet lost a lot of ships, and the ships that they have left, no matter how old, are needed to fill in the blanks with the ship ranks.
    I would just love to see the NX as it could be in Pacific 201 if you didn’t hold back on anything and just made it as the best possible ship you think it could be. Obviously I already love the ship that you made, especially since it still has ties to the original NX class, yet I’m also curious because you said you wanted to do more with it, and I’d like to see what that ship would look like if you did do more with it.

      @DrewLSsix Před 5 lety

      As of the season 2 finale of Discovery this is true, but they were said by TOS production staff to be auxiliary deflectors. Though I feel like this is retroactive to tie TOS to later designs. The D and Voyager had secondary deflectors, though the D looked like windows just like in TOS.

    Nice job! I think thats what the TOS NX series would have ended up like before the Reliant style came into itseslf. Could you do a Reliant preretro fit? I would love to see your version with the round nacells on it. You hit it out in the park. Yes, the NX would have been upgraded up until it was retired or changed up radically. The NX was probably moved more into a patrol status and used more to monitor the neutral zone and upgraded to photon launchers and phazers when that technology was produced. I could see one being used as an escort ship for Enterprise. I never understood why the Federation never had fleets of ships like in real life. A Galaxy class cruiser should have had at least one supply ship, one escort and a medium classed cruiser as part of their exploratory mission. Sending 430 people in one ship to places unknow seemed fool hardy. In the early days of sailing expeditions, there was never just one ship.
