Absolutely payment up-front! I make out that it’s because I’m “so forgetful” and that seems to make people less defensive.
My least favourite readings are when people buy a reading for someone else as a joke, but the last time that happened it was a real treat.
This super cynical, super unimpressed guy flopped down into my chair after his partner has paid for a short reading for him for a haha funny joke. He’s talking about how he didn’t believe any of this, didn’t know anything about it etc; so I start doing the tarot-for-newbies spiel, explaining everything I’m doing and then piecing together the cards. His annoyed muttering is slowing down by now, I turn over the final card and weave everything together, I look up and he’s silent and white as a sheet. Tarot has done the thing that tarot does and his whole life is right there on the table, the cards didn’t care that he didn’t believe, they’ve done it anyway and I’ve just explained his whole situation without knowing anything about him and dealing with his major resistance to the whole experience. I ask my final question, “is that all making sense, do you have any questions?” And he stares at me, mutters “no, no, that’s, ahem, that’s everything”, scrapes his chair back and runs away.
A truly delicious experience.
Hey that's a good tip! You know, I understand some people probably got scammed here and there from people impersonating Tarot readers on Insta. Which is why they might want the reading first. I'm more confident potential clients will recognize the signs of a scam nowadays. And I hate having to run after the money I've earned. That has happened to me. They would bring me the owed money later, and never did. Boooooo (I'm boo-ing that person)
@@AstralLadyTarotyeh I totally get the instagram scammer thing so if I’m doing stuff online I do try and make it look as slick/professional as possible in a hope that helps people feel more comfortable - but yeh I refuse to chase payment anymore, I hate admin anyway and it can feel so soul destroying to have your work and effort undervalued like that.

My first attempt at reading tarot professionally was squashed by the client who sat down and demanded that I tell her something “no one knows about her” to prove that I was worthy of reading cards for her.
Ha! I laughed, then responded that I read tarot and did not consider myself a psychic, and sent her on her way. Unfortunately, that experience has kept me from reading professionally ever since, even 34 years later!
I’ve certainly have had those people approaching me! I also send them on their way, especially when the energy (by lack of a better term) was “taking over” my space, what I was doing in that space. As readers we are the ones who know our practice, and we are the boss. Our realm! Sorry you’ve had this experience but sounds like you did the right thing first time around!

Anna, great video and thank you for spilling some tea for us aspiring professional tarot readers.❤ Here is some of my tea, early on in my reading journey I read for an acquaintance at a party who didn't know I normally do not read for yes/no questions and asked me, "Will I marry a rich man?" Which I then asked her to rephrase it in a non-yes/no question which she then replied, "How do I marry a rich man?". I was like ok I can work with that, but guess what I ended up drawing... The 5 of wands, 9 of swords, 3 of swords, 7 of wands, and death. I still remember the cards and their order as this reading was so memorable. I don’t usually do predictive readings, but these cards were screaming," DON’T MARRY A RICH MAN IT WILL ONLY BRING HEART BREAK AND CONFLICT". However, what did I do as a baby tarot reader who was afraid of hurting others feelings, I decided to try and spin the cards in a positive light which ended up in me fumbling through the reading and ending it with telling her to consentrate on herself and she would maybe be able to marry a wealthy man even though my intuition was screaming out that it could be more harmful to her to only tell her what she wants to hear. Even that wasn't what she wanted to hear, but I swore to myself after that experience to always trust the cards and my intuition about what they want to convey even if someones feelings may be hurt. I still chuckle about it though to this day as she was just so sure she would marry a rich man and that the cards would tell her that! Lol They thought otherwise.
Wooo this one is powerful, especially for readers who are starting out. We need to be sensitive during readings to bring any sort of news in a helpful and hopefully positive way, but indeed not mistrust the cards. Thank you so much for sharing this, very powerful!
Only free readings when I initiate it & payment upfront is always reasonable (imho)

That’s how it’s supposed to be. 💁🏻♀️ If someone doesn’t want to pay you before getting a reading then thats on them. You have to clean your cards, your space and yourself from any spiritual attacks that are tied to them. Fuck that! I’m not picking up your filth for free. My energy works and deserves to be respected, if you don’t like it then find another fool that will abide by those rules. People got nerve! 😂

Your stories made me quite laugh and some are more than relatable! As of free readings... I do them. I've practiced tarot for a few years now but I just... Don't feel "professional" enough yet to make someone pay if that make sense? Or I haven't jumped into the opportunity to take it beyond an hobby I guess - And nice cup and happy Halloween to you ;)
I must say, I also do free readings from time to time. The Live stream I was talking about as an example, and for friends when it's just a part of the conversation. But if someone I don't know asks me for a free reading I must decline as I do this as a job
I think for professional readers of any flavour, the tolerance you all have to put up with inappropriate and bat 💩 cray cray, I just can't.
That last example you shared? I would've sat their blinking at the audacity, " why doh? What is wrong with you lady?"
Love the understanding in this comment hahah! Totally. I'm always in friendly work-mode when I do readings so the sass doesn't come out in those moments. It was clear it was insensitive, especially coming from a person who just moments earlier had stated they can feel so much

My horror story is I once had a lady who was absolutely obsessed in a celebrity (not in an erotomaniac kind of way, but she was just a fan of this female singer & was super invested in the celebrity's love life). She'd send me footage upon footage (hours of it) to study before these short readings. I ended-up blocking her without even recommending another fellow Tarot reader because I just didn't have the heart to inflict that level of wtf upon a peer/colleague.
Another time, I did an online general pick-a-card reading. And there 3 piles about the karmic ex. The third pile turned out to be the partner (not the partner's ex) & i was guided to inform the viewer that THEY were currently in a potentially karmic relationship. Someone got VERY salty in the comments (as if I like getting confusing bad news like that). But they felt the need to leave a berating comment that accused me of all sorts (just super rude in the way they went about it). I explained:
“I just go with the flow and let people hear what they need to hear. It's pretty common for messages that you need to hear rather than what you want to hear to come through.” and then added:
“Sorry, but with an attitude like that: Maybe you're the karmic.”
I'm not proud of it, but it had to be said.
Also, I hate getting clients who are intent in stealing another person's partner/they're the Third Party.

i have a coworker that always tricks me into helping them with tarot advice so i take a heaping spoonful of their peanut butter to get back at them every time yet they still dont stop trying to trick me.
Haha I have those friends! But I accept it ;) Sometimes Tarot just becomes part of the conversation and it's my fault cause more often than not I start shuffling a deck 😂

I read the tarot too, but I love getting a reading sometimes because it’s not biased in comparison to reading it myself, I’m afraid that I’m interpreting the cards based on what I hope the results would be.
