    Thank you for posting this. My truck was broken into last night and they used pliers to turn the cylinder and damaged it. Truck had a hidden kill switch so they didn't get it but I had to replace the cylinder. Thank you. Happened last night and needed the truck today. It worked.

    If your new ignition lock cylinder already came with the tumblers installed all you gotta do is transfer the old tumblers from the old lock to the new lock in the same order. Unless they are worn. Then you gotta have the tumblers machined to the original. Usually it's the keeper that wears out though.
    In this video he is basically rebuilding the tumblers.
    Just thought I'd throw that out so you don't over complicate things and take out more than you have to. This shouldn't be hard to do on a lock cylinder that's already build out of the box.

  • @VestigialHead
    @VestigialHead Pƙed 2 lety +1

    I bought an original part from Holden to replace my cylinder.
    It came with brand new pins and springs.
    I took the old ones out and wrote down the numbers.
    When I put the new spring in and then a pin it does not stay down inside the cylinder like it does in your video.
    I checked my old cylinder and put a pin back in and it sits snug and stays inside.
    With the new one all the pins are being pushed out by the springs. So it is impossible to put the cylinder back in the sleeve as the pins are all sticking out.

      Probably got it figured out already but you fix that by putting the key on the cylinder once you got the pins where they need to be, it locks them in place

      I'm dealing with that. Educated guess and check, and triple check. The numbers on the wafers (the part that he called a tumbler) are directly related to the cut on the key. The deeper the cut, the lower the number is. 1 is the deepest possible cut, and 5 is no cut at all on the key. You can also just do a guess and check. Literally there is only 7 wafers installed on this lock, each with 5 choices. If you do each wafer slot by itself, and make sure the bar goes all the way into the lock, then you only have 35 tries or so to make sure you get it correct for the entire lock.
      That, or just bring the new lock cylinder kit and the key to a lock smith, and they can do it for you.

      Change the tumblers. They're the part that wears out causing the cylinder to stick and not turn. The old ones will be worn and cause the same problem so use new ones.

    • @jorgebrito7467
      @jorgebrito7467 Pƙed 2 lety +3

      the old ignition tumblers are numbered, if you cant get it out you must have dealer provide key code. This code will be 8 digits long, the 1st number is relevant to the key itself, the remaining 7 are the tumbler numbers.

    Will this work for a cylinder from a 1993 f150?

    • @terrycopeland1804
      @terrycopeland1804 Pƙed 3 lety

      P. , no the 93 F-150 is completely different. It is mechanical with a plastic rod that reaches down the column housing to activate an electric switch about halfway down the column (has a screw in the center to hold it in and just unplugs). If your key turns and keeps going around and around the pin in the plastic rod has come out or broken off and needs replacement. If the cylinder rotates and stops and springs back like normal it could be the electric switch. Be cautious and pay close attention if you have to take the cylinder out and replace the rod as that all has to be in the right sequence and reach to activate the electric switch.

      @shevinsacrey5862 Pƙed 4 lety +3

      @@1AAuto thanks I understand that. Its just that the video makes it seem as though there were no springs in it before. You see him pushing out the old tumblers, but the old springs are not coming out with the tumblers (or at least it seems that way) but then new springs are being put it. It makes it quite confusing. You should make it clear that there will be old springs that come out with the old tumblers, and that those springs should be discarded.
