In this video, Christopher Vogler talks about how The Hero's Journey helps writers develop complex characters and uses examples from Greek Mythology.
Christopher Vogler made documentary films as an Air Force officer before studying film production at the University of Southern California, where he encountered the ideas of mythologist Joseph Campbell and observed how they influenced the story design of the first Star Wars movie. He worked as a story consultant in the development departments of 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures and Animation, and Paramount Pictures, and wrote an influential memo on Campbell’s Hero’s Journey concept that led to his involvement in Disney’s Aladdin, The Lion King and Hercules. After the publication of The Writer’s Journey, he had a hand in developing the stories of many productions, including Disney’s remake of 101 Dalmatians, Fox’s Fight Club, Courage Under Fire, Volcano, The Thin Red Line and many others. Vogler lives in Los Angeles, California.

I think that many screenwriters in the film industry these days. Often over look the importance of Joseph Campbell and the Hero’s Journey. Seeing as though it’s been important to storytelling long before film became a thing.
I use the Hero's journey in structuring my stories. I found this easier than the other structures
Out of all the structures that have helped me the Hero’s Journey is my favorite. Sure Six essential questions from Writing for Screens helped and Hauge Six Stage Plot structure helped but the Hero’s Journey is so intuitive. It helped me organize my midpoint and ending( note I worked backwards when creating a story, having the ending figured out first), and helping make sure the details of my work are organized. Structure is meaningless if the internal consistency of your work is terrible. I compare it to cogs of a clock. They all have to have a point and work in tandem.
I like the perspective presented in this interview. Human lives can be complex. Movies are created to get the viewers attention. From what I understand about humans is that a person may be trying to solve an inner conflict, it may have nothing to do with anyone else. Thank you so much for this interview..
