In this video, author/instructor Steve Kaplan shares how in comedy there are several common character archetypes, including the wise guy, the ditzy character, the mother, the stupid character, the nerd, the flirty girl, and the trickster. These archetypes are not stereotypes, but rather representations of a certain point of view or way of being and thinking. Within the archetype, the characters still have other attributes and they should not be written exclusively based on their archetype. These archetypes have been around since early Greek times.
Steve Kaplan is the author of The Hidden Tools of Comedy and The Comic Hero's Journey, best-sellers in their field. He's working on a third book about writing comedy for television.
In addition to having taught at UCLA, NYU, Yale and other universities, Steve created the HBO Workspace, the HBO New Writers Program and was co-founder and Artistic Director of Manhattan Punch Line Theatre. In addition to development projects for HBO, he has taught workshops online and around the globe and at companies such as DreamWorks, Disney Animation, Aardman Animation, and NBC's Writers on the Verge. Steve has worked as a script consultant and script editor for productions companies, studios, directors and individual writers.

    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/3IcVU3r
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Can you assign Winnie-the-Pooh characters to The Simpsons?

No, because not all comedy set ups equate to Winnie the Pooh. The Simpsons seems to follow "The 8 characters of sit-coms" Homer is the lovable loser/dumb one. Bart is the bastard. Marge is the logical smart one. And Lisa is the materialistic one I guess, but not materialistic for material things like money and objects, materialistic in that she is driven by things she wants like justice, animal rights and so on.
