I've been buying used PSUs (with a PSU tester at hand) locally for a while. I get them for 20-40€ each. Buying them new would cost me double. Since I'm flipping, spending more on a PSU than anything else besides maybe the GPU just doesn't make sense.

My recommendation is to go to Quadro, or just workstation GPUs in general, especially on the used market.I picked up a Quadro p400 for 20 bucks, never looked back, despite its performance , it's doing well as my place holder. You could also pick up a Quadro T400 for $150 at the moment and it will be a great card for eSport titles.

I've had really good luck with used parts for the most part. I never buy hard drives or power supplies used as I'm generally buying parts for builds to sell and wouldn't want one of them to fail on someone. Selling pcs to make money sure, but I also want them to get a good value for what they're paying for.

  • @theBoomerDoomer

Great information, thanks for making this video. I will say that buying a used motherboard is okay, as long as it's something that's newer... I've had pretty good luck with the last few I've gotten. For example, I bought a B550 board that's retailing for $300 for about $220 shipped. Haven't had a single problem. Using eBay would be the smart move because of the buyer protections... the prices will generally be higher than using something like FB Marketplace or Craigslist, but the protections make the higher price worth it, IMHO.

I bought lots of stuff used before, mostly gpus (all either rx 570/580, most likely from miners), once I had to reflash a bios but it was fine and I agree if you don't know how to do it, it can be spooky. The only real problem I ever had was a 3700x with bent pins i got on ebay and I had to send it back. Was a hassle but it wasn't too bad the seller was highly rated and had good communication through the process.
I don't think I will ever buy a used psu. Hdds are hit and miss, I got one once that made lots of noise, and I also once got one that had 6 hours of power on time (I used "hd sentinel" to check it).
I took a risk and bought an a320 mobo for about $30 with a huge scratch on the back from Amazon warehouse before that still works actually. I think that is lucky though and wouldn't recommend doing that.
All in all though I think buying local amd seeing/testing out firsthand is the best bet, anything from an online store will always carry some risk. It is spooky but it can pay off.

I've been building computers for about 25 years. I recently decided to upgrade an older handmade desktop. The first "refurbished" MSI B460M was DOA. Since the CPU and RAM would work in an MSI B560M, I bought one new...It failed after two days. (All 6 SATA ports would go dead intermittently at the same time.) I bought the B560M from Amazon, so it is getting replaced, although swapping a Motherboard is a pain in the ass.
I also bought three WD 500GB NVMe SSDs from Amazon, two good, and one bad. On this one build, I've had as many bad parts as in the previous 25 years combined. I think QC is now pretty hit-and-miss.

I am typing this on a dual CPU Xeon workstation T5610 with 128 GBs of ram and two 8 core 16 thread CPUs for 500 CDN which I guess would be roughly 450 USD. A local animation studio was selling off their old workstations and were selling them for pennies on the dollar. I got a i7 4790 for $200. I tried powering it on with the stock power supply and got no output, tried to hook up a USB monitor hoping to be able to trouble shoot it and the 5v rail died in the PSU instantly.
I ended up paying $50 for a non modular 450 watt power supply, I could have gotten a better deal, but I was excited to get it up and running, and was really curious if my "new" GPU worked.

No, not at all. You can only apply safe voltages via software. The only thing I'd worry about are GCN architecture cards, especially R9 290/390 as they run extremely hot and are now reaching an age where thermal paste is completely dried up and they often get micro cracks in the BGA joints, so they're essentially toast. There's people that reflow them with a heat gun and then resell them. This rarely ever happens to Nvidia cards, except maybe the 400/500 series, but those are essentially useless by today's standards.

Don't know how it's going for the rest of the world but I've found facebook marketplace to be my best source of parts, but you have to be quick and careful. Quick because a good deal will never last long and careful because too good of a deal is almost always a scam so ask questions and if any of it sounds iffy/dodgy/sketchy/"whatever slang term in your culture means you should run away" then you run away. I've gotten amazing deals this way (just today nabbed a GTX 960 2gb (ASUS Mini) for £50 (they are going for £80-£100 on ebay and marketplace) and when I went to pick up asked the guy if he had any other parts he wanted rid of... his dad had a Gigabyte 960 2gb he'd just removed from his machine due to upgrading and offered it to me for £50. Deals like this do happen. Also, ebay can work, just search for mis-spelled items and don't be afraid to buy the 1gb gtx 750. It still has nvidia support and is not bad for 720p gaming when paired with a 1st gen i7. Remember the golden saying - 720p is good enough for me. Stay toasty.

Yep, local deals will work all the time. Sometimes I take calculated risks and sometimes I get hosed when I do, but I can almost always sell faulty parts as faulty and very little loss to someone who wants them for parts. Still, local deals are great. I got 9 Ryzen 3 3200Gs with A320 boards and 16GB RAM for 100€ each. I'm getting 5 HP ProDesk 400 G2 tomorrow for 30€ each. They're simple flips and I don't make much profit. But some local kids are very happy with their first gaming PCs.

Any i7 4770 or better or Ryzen 5 2600X (or better - and needs a decent RAM kit) with a GTX 960 or better (recommend GTX 970 or R9 290) will do just fine for your purposes. Fornite performance mode is mostly CPU limited.

Depending if the PC parts are outdated, then yeah, it could be somewhat of a bad idea. It's better to go with the newer components than trust the old, outdated ones.

Used GPUs are unfortunate reality . CPU + MB ... meh, only if you need something much cheaper than i3-10100 +h410 . Used RAM .. only if you need DDR3 . Storage and PSU definitely no, except if you are buying whole machine that you know is working well (lets say from a friend) . PC cases ... well, sometimes you could get really good deal or even get them from free.
