- Samsung may be known for android phones, TVs and appliances, but it’s also been the undisputed leader in memory for more than three decades. Now, as memory prices continue to fall, it’s doubling down on manufacturing chips for outside customers, with a $17 billion new chip fab in Texas and new $228 billion cluster in South Korea. CNBC got a rare look inside Samsung’s chip business to bring you the untold story of how it became the world’s second biggest advanced chipmaker, just as it makes plans to catch the industry leader TSMC.

as an Indian, Samsung is such a trusted company here since decades in Consumer Electronics.
From Ovens, to Washing Machines, to TVs, to Refrigerators, to Mobile phones.
Their service is very prompt too.
Sometimes it can be a little expensive but any Indian who is going out to look for an electronic product will first go get a look at Samsung products to know what they want and then go to others like LG, Sony, etc to compare, but Samsung is always prefered.
It's like you got a Samsung, no more worries. While with servicing of other brands, parts availability is always an issue, Samsung parts are always available and in most cases they will come to your home to fix stuff as well.

Samsung seems to have studied the failures of Sony very well and its taking steps in exact opposite of what Sony did. Sony relied that their own superior technology, quality and design will last forever and did not diversify into other technologies. While Samsung's key is basically diversify into everything possible. Samsung will pour money into technologies that will fail just to make sure there isn't anything more there. The loss in funds is nothing compared to losing the next technological advancement that will power the next generation of electronics... Samsung has a much better and solid grip on technology than Sony ever did...
After 1986, the American market share curve is a deadly death, which has been around 20%. Intel lost to Japan. Enterprises, the ultimate abandonment of semiconductor storage business, into the field of microprocessors, then, which 70% of the huge market has entered the stomach? The answer is South Korea. In just over 30 years, few people have remembered the chip war that broke out between Japan and the United States. In this battle, the Japanese lost their money, occupying nearly 80% of the world’s DRAM (commonly known as computer memory) share from the peak, and fell to zero now. This chip war perfectly explains what is called international political economy. Adam Smith’s theory of free market competition is just a beautiful fairy tale in the big country industry PK. The first five years of the 1980s were the highlights of Japanese semiconductor chip companies. In the semiconductor storage field, Intel and AMD and other technology startups in Silicon Valley were chased by the Japanese, and then they were overtaken and driven away from the throne. The semiconductor chip field (which was mainly dominated by semiconductor storage at the time) became the back garden of Japanese companies. American technology companies have lost their models. The development model of Silicon Valley is to invest capital into startups through venture capital. After the startups receive financial support, they will continue to acquire technological innovations to gain market, enhance the company’s valuation, and then go public, and venture capital will sell stocks to profit. This model is market-oriented, efficient, but small in size, and it is difficult to integrate resources between companies. After all, everyone is a competitor in the pan. Kyushu Island is known as Japan’s “Silicon Island”. It has concentrated on Japan’s vast majority of semiconductor chip companies. The Japanese play is very different: concentrate on doing big things. In 1974, the Japanese government approved the “Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit (commonly known as Semiconductor Chip)” program, setting the goal of catching up with US integrated circuit technology. Subsequently, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Japan organized Hitachi, NEC, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Toshiba to integrate the talent resources of Japanese production, research and research semiconductors, break down corporate barriers, enable enterprises to collaborate and improve the technical level of Japanese semiconductor chips. Japan’s plan has also died a little bit, and companies have been wary of each other and demolition of each other. The government’s promised funds have been delayed. At the crucial moment, the founder of Japanese semiconductor research, Tsujii Yasuo, stood up. He used his prestige to knead the various participants. The statement of Mr. Sakai is simple and clear: Only by working together can we change the backwardness of Japan’s chip-based technology. When the research results come out, each company will conduct product research and development. Only in this way can we reverse the dilemma of Japanese companies fighting alone in international competition. The Americans were frightened by the plan for four years, and Japan obtained thousands of patents, which suddenly narrowed the technological gap with the United States. Then, the Japanese government introduced measures such as loans and tax incentives, and companies such as Hitachi, NEC, and Fujitsu were strong and strong enough. A modern semiconductor memory chip manufacturing plant has emerged in Japan. As the production line runs day and night, the Japanese launched a saturation attack. The American nightmare begins. In 1980, Japan captured 30% of the semiconductor memory market. Five years later, Japan’s share exceeded 50%, and the United States was left behind. Silicon Valley’s high-tech companies can’t stand the market share, and they continue to send people over the Pacific to Japan to scout, which makes people feel desperate. Andy Grove, then Intel’s production director, said with dismay: “The people who came back from Japan have described the situation very seriously.” If Grove went to Japan, he would be scared: a Japanese company. An entire building was used for storage chip development. The first floor staff developed 16KB capacity, the second floor staff developed 64KB, and the third floor staff developed 256KB. The Japanese rhythm of research and development is simply the legendary three arrows, so that Silicon Valley companies accustomed to one-handedly playing the knife have no power. What makes Americans feel suffocated is that Japan’s memory chips are not only large, but also of good quality. In the 1980s, the American Semiconductor Association conducted quality tests on memory chips in the United States and Japan, hoping to find the weaknesses of their rivals, and found that the highest quality memory chips in the United States were worse than the worst quality in Japan. Moreover, the Japanese also patted their chests to assure customers that the Japanese memory chip guarantees quality for 25 years! Intel almost stunned the Japanese under the aggressive attack, the American chip company was defeated, and the financial data was like melting ice cream, a mess.In 1981, AMD’s net profit fell by 2/3, National Semiconductor lost $11 million, and earned $52 million in the previous year. In the second year, Intel was forced to lay off 2,000 employees. The Japanese continued to expand their battles. The Americans continued to mourn. In 1985, Intel surrendered and announced its withdrawal from the DRAM storage business. This war caused it to lose $173 million, the first loss since its listing. At Intel’s most critical moment, if IBM did not help, and bought 12% of its bonds to guarantee cash flow, the chip giant is likely to close down or be acquired, and the history of the US information industry may be rewritten. Intel founder Robert Noyce (left) and other Silicon Valley companies set up SIA, the goal is to deal with the competition of Japanese semiconductor companies Intel founder Robert Noyes lamented the United States into the process of “imperial decline.” He asserted that if this situation continues, Silicon Valley will become a ruin. What makes Americans intolerable is that Fujitsu intends to acquire an 80% stake in Fairchild Semiconductor. Fairchild Semiconductor is the living fossil of Silicon Valley, as the founders of most of Silicon Valley’s technology companies (including Intel and AMD) were once employees of Fairchild Semiconductor. In the minds of Silicon Valley people, the existence of Fairchild Semiconductors, and now the Japanese have to buy their “God”, is this not a shame? One American newspaper wrote in the report: “This transaction tells us through a message that we are already lagging behind. What is important is how we should respond to this.” Fairchild Semiconductor has a sacred position in the hearts of Silicon Valley people. Formerly, the Silicon Valley technology company established the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) to deal with the Japanese attack. After several years of lobbying, the results were as follows: the capital income tax rate was reduced from 49% to 28%, and the pension was pushed into the venture capital field. But the government is reluctant to come forward to help. Bitter until June 1985, SIA finally concocted a view that made Washington not calm, and turned the situation in one fell swoop. The magic logic reverses the situation. SIA’s view is that the weakening of the US semiconductor industry will bring significant risks to national security. Is Japan not an ally of the United States? The rise of Japanese semiconductors, the decline of American semiconductors, and the game of watching the left pocket and the right pocket, how can it threaten the national security of the United States? The logical chain of SIA is this: because super-weapon technology is inseparable from super-electronic technology, super-electronic technology is inseparable from the latest semiconductor technology (this is no problem); if the US semiconductor technology is backward, the US military will be forced to The use of foreign products on key electronic components, including Japanese goods (somewhat meaning); foreign sources are unreliable, the United States will be out of stock during the war, and will be supplied to the US rivals in the non-war period (Japanese see here, it is estimated to cry Therefore, the United States let Japan dominate the semiconductor chip field, it is equal to the sacrifice of national security

We call it 'Korea discount '. It refers to the market devaluation on Korean companies due to the potential security risk from North Korea as technically we are still st war. Perhaps if Samsung was an US or UK company, it would value way higher IMO.

Samsung's Semiconductor business plan is to invest when others are NOT investing. Cheaper materials, and labor brought by reduced demand for such infrastructure. But when the economy roars back to its expansion phase, that is when, due to economies of scale and the prior investment in expansion, they reap the fruits that they've sowed, increasing margins drastically while their competitors are hurting.

Memory chips are required in massive amounts for AI models and calculations, it's not just logic chips that's required. If anything, there's a high capacity memory module shortage in the industry as demonstrated by Nvidia GPUs getting slammed by reviewers and customers for still having memory capacity standards of 5 years ago. Demand dropped for old memory modules, not new, higher capacity ones.
With increasing connectivity speed (5G), AI modules can access memory instantenously in the cloud, I would think that on device chips needed will be more of logic rather than memory. cloud and faster connectivity is a major reason demand for memory chips is slowing down.
@@TomiwaAdegbola There’s no ‘instantaneous access’ to the cloud or any magic like that. AI needs as fast access as cutting edge technology allows on the same board, even on same chip to work real-time. Storage =/= memory
@sapphyrus Nvidia is getting blasted by reviews because they limited their memory on their middle to lower cards to be cheap. There isn't a shortage of memory as other mfg have added plenty of memory to their cards. Problem is they put 8gb on even their slightly higher than middle cards that should be able to play games at give resolutions but can't as games at higher resolutions use more memory. They limited themselves and deserve every criticism they are getting.
Samsung also has huge advantages over the US as the company as a whole is a monopoly and controls a good amount of govt. That is what SK did to achieve where they are now, let companies monopolize and grow with no competition.
It is not scientifically possible to have off premises ram. Unless we can exceed the speed of light. Silicon photonics is a great tech on prem for node to node communication and maybe one day we can have JBOD type arrays for ram that actually do stuff but the real moneys in cache. That’s why you see AMD with 3D V-cache and intel with Adamantine and on die HBM in their meteor lake (coming soon) and SPR parts

Mazda similarly got its start making corks which seems crazy and completely different from how they make their money today. Although at least from the start unlike Samsung, they were a manufacturer.

I have high hopes for this platform
The problem with Samsung's fabrication division is this. They are the victims of their own success. Samsung designs and makes logic chips that compete with Apple, Intel, Qualcomm, etc which makes Samsung untrusted by their customers (who are also Samsung competitors). If Samsung wants to be number one in fabrication, they need to spin off its fabrication industry and make them unrelated to the Samsung group. Otherwise, customers will continue to favor TSMC because TSMC doesn't compete with its own customers.
You just described why TSMC will fail.
Every country in the world right now is trying to have domestic chip manufacturing. This will ultimately lead to companies producing their own chips in-house domestically or to partner with another domestic company to do so. Apple and Qualcomm will drop TSMC for Intel given the chips act and this will destroy TSMC. Europe also wants to develop their own chips in Europe.
Samsung already produces its own chips and domestic demand is high enough that they can survive even with the global protectionism going on. taiwanese domestic demand is nowhere high enough and TSMC will either have to move to the US or just lose 90% of their market share.

With buyers' inventory starting to dry up and suppliers' output diminishing proactively, memory chip makers look to flourish sooner than people think. Nvidia and Amd need hbm from either hynix or samsung in making their AI chips. Two biggest hbm makers' market shares are to mount over time.

@@toolstechgadgets Don't think so. SS's 2022 revenue was about $233B where Apl was $385B. But - what is more important - is that Apple's net revenue dwarfs everyone else - their margins are tremendous. Memory (and other components) that Samsung make are commodities with a low margin in a competitive market. SS flagship phones make good margins, but most of the their phone clients buy low to middle end phones in a fiercely competitive landscape (low margins). This is why the market cap of Apple dwarfs SS (Apple near $3,000B v. $327B for SS). (To be clear I'm citing SS electronics and not other SS corporations).

I used to love Samsung products and swear by them. It seems like quality has dipped across the board though. I’ve had issues with my Samsung phones and appliances. I hope they can focus on getting their quality back to being solid again.

Almost all Samsung washing machines and dryers are manufactured in Newberry, South Carolina now. As a result, Samsung appliances, especially washing machines & dryers, aren't as trustworthy as they used to be.

It seems that Japan lost itself during the transition from analogue to digital era. The big Japanese name, such as Toshiba, Fujitsu, Pioneer, Sanyo, Panasonic, Sony more or less faded away. The Japanese companies only partially digitized their product, such add a digital display to their products and stopped evolving. Apple and Samsung are the leaders of the digital era. The core is the personal computer and Internet which were both invented by the US. computers evolved from initially as big as a house to a desktop PC, to a laptop, to a iPad, and now to a smartphone. The size of a computer become smaller and smaller. I bet the PCs will further evolve to smaller size, maybe one day it will evolve to the size of a medical capsule working in human's body. The Japanese is too close, this is the reason their mobile phone failed as they only aims in Japanese market. Only being open minded and opened to the world can make you stronger.

I have a Samsung cellphone that is in an emergency situation and is almost completely dead. As a result of a brutal blow, but I discouraged myself from throwing it in the trash. I suspect some of Lee’s close relatives wanted to grip the governance of Samsung with Chinese support. So my theory is that the leftist government locked up Lee and put pressure on him to release it. What was he convicted for?
For letting Asian Game horse riding medalist ride horses bought by Samsung. (Samsung has sponsored hose riding for decades!) And for giving money to the Association of Business’(전경련) to set up a modest culture/sports foundation which President Park wanted to be set up. The leftist court argued that this is the ‘bribe’.
And what Lee got in exchange? The leftist court ruled Lee got the favorable stockholder’s voting by the Public Pension Fund, for Lee’s Samsung governance against a hostile US hedge fund’s try to take over.
And to whom Lee gave his ‘bribe’? The court argued ‘to President Park’.
The problem is that Lee or anyone working for him did not mention anything about the voting, to President Park. Neither the President ordered how to vote to the Public Pension Fund. The court ruled that “the situation itself is the communication”.
If Lee had given up in jail, Samsung would have become a Chinese company by now.

Some convicted criminals are just that - convicted criminals. Your writing clearly shows your political bias. You would certainly not be saying the same and appealing for sympathy for the person if they promoted "leftist" views or was a "leftist" politician - then you would simply label him as a convicted criminal after all. Hard to envission reading an article about sumsung in about 1978 when it tried to build a first microwave . It apparently melted . Right off they bought a small company near New York which was a producer of microwave generators. The rest is history.
