    I've always suspected that there is some very interesting physics going on with the "exploding" playing cards and paper when put under the press. Seeing the cavitation resulting from doing it underwater now makes me really want to know more about what exactly is going on.

    • @seymourinit
      @seymourinit Před 2 lety +1

      It is a bubble pulse.
      This is caused by the bubble expanding until the water pressure is greater then it collapses under this pressure until the bubble overrides the water pressure and expands again until the water pressure is greater and on and on.
      I used to do marine seismic exploration and this is an affect we need to consider as we only want the primary energy and not the bubble pulse.

  • @ve2vfd
    @ve2vfd Před 2 lety +13

    Maybe loud noise is from shockwave in water (non compressible) hitting the walls of the aquarium and the walls are vibrating and acting like speakers? (just guessing, I'm no physicist).

    • @jasonyesmarc309
      @jasonyesmarc309 Před 2 lety +1

      I was thinking this too. There would be very little dissipation when it reaches the container walls, as water doesn't compress, so the surface of the container is getting the direct vibrations of the object under the press.
      When you're above a lake or pool, tossing a grenade in, the vibrations go into the dirt, and the disturbance of the water's surface and limited contact with the air doesn't let it translate to the air as well, compared to how it transfers to a solid container wall. That might be why the explosion was muffled when you tried in the outdoor body of water.

    • @Yora21
      @Yora21 Před 2 lety +1

      Had a similar hunch. At this scale of the container, the shockwave would hit the walls really hard. And being in water, the shockwave would hit the walls much harder than in air.

    Interesting, it looked like the shock of the exploding card deck created a lot of cavitation bubbles, and then as they collapsed it sucked the cards back toward the center, which is why they didn't go flying out much. Obviously the denser water would have kept them from traveling very far anyway, but the effect of cavitation was interesting to see.

    • @YerpyMoose

      There are also lungers with horrific serrated forelimbs that really explain why they are called MANTIS Shrimp

    • @stalhandske9649
      @stalhandske9649 Před 2 lety

      @@YerpyMoose Upon looking up I believe we are thinking of different shrimps.
      Mantis Shrimps are the order called _Stomatopoda_ while snapping (or pistol) shrimps are a family in an order called _Decapoda._
      While both _do_ form cavity bubbles with their claws, with former they are a sort of side product of their fast strikes, whereas with latter the shock of cavity bubble is in itself the primary weapon, creation of which their peculiarly asymmetrical claws have evolved for.
      An inconsequential detail, I admit.

    could you make a curved wall, say an ellipse, with an explosive at one focus and a test object at the other focus? It might be possible to have the foci separated by several meters yet have a small explosion efficiently coupled to the test object. Better yet an ellipsoid. It's still winter, so this could be made from snow. Ellipses are simple to generate...

    With the sound still being clear. There are certain sounds that will travel through water pretty damn good.
    When I was younger my family used to sail up the west coast of Sweden for about 1-2 weeks to then sail back to our port.
    During this time I have experienced having the boat sail onto rocks or have it's lead bottom part hit the rocks.
    This cling sound will be heard hundreds of meters away without a problem.
    For instance, we where at a port and chilling in the boat and some people about 300 to maybe 400 meters away hit some rocks with their sailing boat. You could hear it clear as day. Like a bell.
    Explosions will most likely be muffled but those metal part hitting each other? Nah man, you'll hear that.
