  • How strong are steel or rubber hammers when they are deep freezed with liquid nitrogen? We are going to use our 150 ton hydraulic press and 150 ton force sensor to find out! Don't try this at home! Crushing steel hammers is really dangerous and they can explode!

    You can see how the stress as it starts to compress heats up the socket, as the line of condensed frost moves from the top and bottom to the middle.

      I think it is more conduction of heat from the large press plates to the small socket.

      It doesn't start "defrosting" until there is a fair amount of pressure on it, and it accelerated every time pressure was added.

    This was one of the coolest things you've ever done i think. The way that big hammer breaks apart is insane. The steal looks like it does when being forged it had slag come off it. Also u can see every little crack when it starts going. So freaking bad ass.

      @@tantamounted - That was the weakest point. As you can see in the Slo Mo there was a compression zone running parallel to the hammer handle which then turned into the fracture zone.

      It was just the plastic handle inside the hammer, but it still looked cool. We did actually get sparks on a few of them.

      Yes! I don't know if you Finns were ever tortured by Barney the purple dinosaur, but freezing a Barney doll in liquid nitrogen and crushing it, compared to your best imitation of a "Chucky" doll (from the movie Child's Play), Barbie and Ken on Ice (not talking about ice skating) etc. Might be pretty funny.

    Wow, at 7:50 if you watch, you can see fractures spiderwebbing out from the top, the bottom, and the middle. They grow outward slowly. And when the fractures from the ends touch the fractures from the middle, that's when the hammer shatters suddenly. Good stuff.

      The cracks are from the paint coat in the hammer. It's coincidental that it explodes at that time.

    The thing about the spring is that once it is compressed that much, it has a lot of energy that is just waiting to be released. That's why it exploded that violently. Springs under tension are extremely dangerous.

    You should measure the change in temperature as they are being compressed. Seeing the frost fade as the pressure increases was cool. It'd be interesting to know how quickly the metals temp rises and to what degree. Awesome stuff!

    You can see where the parts are heating up under compression by the frost melting.
    It would've been cool to see a thermal slow motion, if that was possible. Seeing how hot it got from cryo temperatures and how rapidly, compared to room temperature.

    Very cool how you could see the ice melting on the socket where it bent. So much heat produced there that it melted it straight off!
    Also on the hammers you could instantly see the weak spots where the ice melted off/cracked off

      I think it was more the heat conducting from the relatively warm metal parts of the press than the deformation of the part itself. Since it was so brittle i don't think it was noticeably deformed.

      Yeah I think it was the sheer heat that's produced when the items are crushed that's what's making the frost melt. Glad someone else thought and saw it too.

      It is the base of the press bouncing upwards when the item being crushed fails. You can see it clearly in the slo-mo, or frame-by-frame, if you pay attention to the base. This shock makes the fluorescents to lose the electric discharge for a brief moment. If the lamps were not touching the press framework, they would light uninterrupted. Lauri: Hint hint!

    Its interesting how you can SEE it heating up! The way they crack also reminds me of pouring boiling water into glass and it cracking from the rapid change- are these breaking so easily for the same reason?

      Glass is very brittle at any temperature but it's the heat difference causing stress in your case, I suppose the stress comes from pressure difference in the crushing case but the effect is the same. Would love to see these crushing vids with a thermal camera for metal and a polarized light camera (or however they do that) for glass to see the stress build before breaking point

    I wonder - what exactly happens just a moment before the thing explodes that causes the light to go out for a fraction of second? Is it a light issue or a camera sensor issue? Is there some magnetic phenomenon going on with cold metals under pressure that disrupts electronics? Why does that happen in pretty much every crush? Or does it have to do something with the setting and the press itself? So many questions!

    Very cool experiment! Slomo was amazing! I'm with you on the spring. Surprised it still would compress. The thermal dynamics produced from the compression energy was amazing. Great physics representation on the transfer of energy as heat. How much does it cost to buy liquid Nitrogen? I wonder how a cube of 7075 Aluminum would shatter after Lq Nitrogen.
