  • After putting a new chain and rear sprocket on my Kawasaki Versys 650 I decided to protect my investment and also reduce my general faff levels by fitting a bona fide Scottoiler to the bike. Here's me deciding where to put it and then, you guessed it, putting it there!
    Faffing, dismantling, zip ties and impossible viewing angles ensue!

    Using my Scotti since 2009 and went from the Suzuki to the KTM in 2011. Still working flawlessly. First chain kit on the KTM lasted 50.000km.

      Servus! I did think actually that i hadn't heard you mention the Scottoiler at all on your Eurotrip videos (my German is a little slow to catch everything, so i might have missed it!) Which can only be a good thing. When it works you don't notice it.

    I bought a super blackbird that someone had fitted one of these to it , it seemed to work perfect for around 4 months then one day came into a left hand bend around 70 and the back end slid ,, thought I had a puncture , after pulling over the Scot oiler had for some reason got very generous and pissed half the oil over the left side of my rear tyre , nearly killed me , all the fittings were secure , and I always used the correct oil ,, can assure you if I ever bought a second hand bike with one fitted ,, before riding it defiantly would be ripped off and binned ,,, noticed later models that run off the electrics as apposed to vacuum type like your fitting , and the same as I had. ,,, cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

      That's far less than ideal mate! Luckily I've not run into similar trouble. TBH I'd sooner trust the vacuum system than electrics on something that gets wet quite a lot!!

    My Honda Shadow has had a Scott Oiler for 20000km and the chain is still like a new! Surprised I am!

    Entertaining vid Andy. Particularly liked the proboscis point of reference. lol.
    As for the ScottOiler, don't rely on those pads holding the tube in place because the chain oil fling will eventually soak into the adhesive and cause them to fall off. Better to supplement with cable ties.
    Also, beware the feed nozzle as they get eaten by the rear sprocket when reversing the bike if they're too close to the chain. Remember to check it immediately after cleaning and especially after a tyre change.
    If you want something cheaper than ScottOiler lube, try Stihl chainsaw lube instead.
    ScottOilers do work, but they're not really as 'set and forget' as we'd like to think. Anyway, best of luck with it.

      I think it may have been the reversing that munched the nozzle on my last oiler. That and any form of actual bracketry to hold it in place! Good tip on the chainsaw oil. I guess it probably has the same thickening and anti fling 'engineering' that the scottoiler stuff does? Fingers crossed for a trouble free Scottoiling experience! Though i suppose shaft drive is the only true fit and forget!

    Andy, thanks for the video it really helped fitting the Scottoiler to my Versys. One criticism though, there's no need to cut the vacuum hose on a Versys and fit a 'T' connector. If you look carefully there's a spare nipple behind the one which has the tube connected. All you have to do is remove the cap and plug the Scottoil tube in. Ride Safe.

      +disekjoumoer Oh yes! Fuel economy is down to 25 MPG now. I blame the sun lounger mostly. The toaster was difficult as it's gets hot between the legs. Great in winter mind.

    Super vid, just subbed. One thing I had explained to me by my bike mechanic was that the oil needs to go between the plates of the chain, to the O rings. Not onto the rollers. I had mine set up like yours. Mine doesn't work though, no vacuum... need to get the tank and airbox off again.. grr.

      I guess I'm just hoping that the oil is finding it's way in between the plates. It seems to be finding it's way to everywhere else! ;) I'll have a crack at jury-rigging some kind of dual feed at some point. Good luck with your fix.

    Freaking entertaining. Where the hell you get all the hilarious anecdotes... There was another great one in the Brexit No.1... I already forgot the exact words but not that is was making me laugh, my sandwich came through my nose. You are awesome!     You need a Dremel AMC ! Can't live without one. You'd have had that bracket done in about thirty seconds. I love the idea right up to the point where you have to cut into the actual cab piping. Yikes !
    But if anybody can make it work properly - you are that man.

      I know! That's another thing that my Dad's fully stocked garage had and that i miss now that i can't borrow it! Cutting pipes that were there 'since birth' is always an unrelaxing task isn't it. Still, vac pipe is at least quite cheap to replace if it had all gone south / when it eventually all goes south!!! So far it seems to be working!... so far. ...

      I used to be scared stiff of that stuff but I learned carbs for two strokes and now I'm pretty relaxed about it. But I don't know much about 4 stroke carbs. Where is the vacuum coming from ? The crank case on the up-stroke ?

      I honestly have no idea mate. Though if it's vacuum through the throttle body, would it make sense for it to be created by the 'suck' phase of the cylinders cycle, as it draws the fuel and air in? (Exhaust valve closed, intake open).

    Now I've today just taken delivery of a SO and compared size (cheeky) mine is longer. Presumable because i'm now £99 lighter and yours was a tad cheaper. Just putting the finishing touches to it so it's hidden I'm so excited!

      +Flatcap007 Excellent! Mine is still going strong. Except for when i left it on prime and c blasted through a whole tank full of oil in 300km!! I think mine is different because it was a Louis special edition. It was only cheaper because of the special offer, cheeky moneygrabbing swines! Mind you, smaller reservoir was easier to conceal! #ThatsWhatSheSaid

    I prefer to just get down and dirty on my chain and clean it with paraffin every 500 miles. Gives you chance to check all the links over too.
    Scottoil is expensive and fitting, setting up and adjusting the system from 2 drops per minute up to 4 then back down again every time it rains heavy is a total & utter faff.
    Plus the tubes kinda like becoming unattached from time to time and melting on exhaust or just general flailing around etc.

      Just don't forget the chain. Even though you have an oiler it still good to clean crap off it now and then.
      Yeah you are adding another chain care item into the mix so it is worth it.

      Look after your chain and it looks after you. The more care you take of it the better. I've still got the Kettenmax doohicky for periodical diesel bathing! Hopefully I've just stretched out the intervals to a few times a year instead of monthly mess-fests!

    Scotoiler are just up the road from us in Milngavie, and I'm told you can buy them there and they will fit it for you.
    Don't suppose that's a great benefit to you though !

    I bought one of these for one of my bikes when I was a courier. It was a real pain in the arse. In the end I gave it away and went back to oiling the chain by hand once a week and cleaning it once a month. Mine worked sometimes. Sometimes it didn't bother. Once, it spewed so much oil it ended up being thrown off the chain all over the wheel and tire, the frame and a side panel.
    Perhaps they have improved it since those days though. Good luck with it. I shall look forwards to seeing how you get on with it.

      Well, there was a lot more faff to getting it running correctly on yours -- I'm not sure mine had a flow adjustment for example -- so that bodes well for the R&D department. Only time will tell. Mine used to go mental on hot days in Summer I think.

      It was a long time ago and I cannot remember exactly how it worked. I think -- but I am not sure -- that there may have been a twisted nozzle arrangement for rudimentary flow control of sorts. I do remember it being a real pain in the arse to get set up right and it never worked as it should.
      Still, yours looks better. I hope it works well for you.

    Ok, I do have to throw my comment in there. Helped my friend install his on his bike a few months back, so I've noticed a couple things. Firstly, there are specific installation guides on Scottoilers Website, which might have helped, especially since they tell you that you need an adapter for your swingarm.... no drilling necessary! Also, you didn't need to cut that vacuum pipe, there are a couple spigots on your throttle bodies, and the rubber thing you put on the T-piece would have simply gone on one of those.... But all in all, looks good! (oh and p.s., the sticky clips last for ages!)

      Good news about the clips! Hoping to never have to touch them again! I didn't want to mess with the spigots on the throttle bodies as i have a pipe connecting them which allegedly provides some balancing effect. Also that would have entailed disconnecting and removing the petrol tank and therefore all of the cowling Panels along with it. A faff i could not be faffed with! Quick and dirty on this occasion. I also didn't want to wait for Scottoiler to send me the adapter and i certainly didn't want to pay any more money! Quicker and dirtier still! Plus i get a kick out of using what's available! I also didn't like the position scottoiler suggested for the reservoir. I felt it was too horizontal and as such wasted a few thousand miles worth of oil capacity. I did watch the official video though. Forwarned is forearmed! :D Cheers Alex!

    An amazingly handy tool to add at some point is a 4.5" angle grinder. Between grinding and cutoff wheels, you can do an amazing amount of damage to things effortlessly. Would have trimmed that bracket and your nails in a blink.

      +Chris Esser Very sound advice! When I was at home, my dads extensive tool collection was always 'just there'. But now I'm starting from scratch! Maybe I'll start with a Dremel, before I graduate to full on angle grinder?!

      Dremels are _amazing_ especially for all the little crap, like fitting a gauge, or carving out a path for a wire where plastic panels rub. They are a portable, poor man's machine shop.
      Just realize that a Dremel gets its power from RPMs and not torque. When you are slowing them down, you are straining the motor, back off and let the speed and the fitted cutter do the work.
      _Always_ wear goggles with a Dremel, those cutoff wheels and flying burrs of metal or plastic are no joke with your eyes.
      I am partial to the variable speed, non flex cable type of Dremel, they last the best.
      Dremels are best on softer materials, Aluminum and plastics and of course wood.
      Angle grinders are beasts, for cutting through heavier materials where a Dremel is more about 1/8" and thinner materials for smaller shaping and cutting.

    Great video.
    Have you installed this product on a single side swingarm motorcycle, like Triumph Speed triple, Tiger Sport or Ducati?
    It seems pretty hard to do it on this kind of bikes..

      Cheers mate. That was my biggest fear. Chopping too enthusiastically and then having a redundant chain oiler installed why i try and locate more pipe of the right size!

    I'm watching your old vid because my ER6f I just got has one fitted and I want it gone lol
    Too messy for my liking, you are supposed to wipe off the excess and leave your chain for 30 mins before riding after you lube it. Plus the scottoiler only lubes half the chains O or X rings.

      Ha! I wouldn't be without one! I don't really have a problem with splash tbh. I'm not sure why you'd leave it for 30 mins. It's not like the oil dries on! Plus you can't leave it for 30 minutes after every drop through the system! In all seriousness though, the fact that i got 15,000 hard miles out of my last chain and only had to clean & adjust the chain once it's enough to convince me that it's a gadget worth having. I even had to tell the guy i sold the bike to that the chain was already 15k down as he thought it was quite new! (I'm so honest me)

      The 30 mins was my confusion, sorry lol, that's with chain wax, I would still prefer to maintain it myself. My rear sprocket is filthy lol

      Haha! Ok! Yeah we each have our preferred ways. I find that the Scottoiler works great for me. I'd prefer a dual sided oiler, but i think the benefit would be relatively small. But i totally understand why others would hate the mess of it all. Some folks even enjoy regular chain maintenance. I HATE it! 😆

    Andy what was the size of the T connector you've put in? I want to do the vac port mod but I also have the scottoiler connected so I need to do what you did.

      The T-Piece was in the kit, so I'm afraid I don't know what size it was. It just fitted.

    I'm wondering why you need to put a Scott oiler on when the chain is o ring sealed? A bit of WD-40 will work

      The idea is that the chain is always wet. This firstly reduces wear between the chain and the sprockets. Secondly it means that the oil is constantly refreshed and this stops crap from sticking to the chain or from a build up of sludge and grit accelerating the wear. ALSO WD40 will firstly displace the grease from inside the sealed O-rings, and then after a longer period it will degrade the rubber of the O-rings.

    Ah the scottoiler, the most useless piece of kit you can buy.. Had a couple of these, firstly the single sided outlet you have will only lube half the chain, hence why the sell the "dual" to get around that. But even if you spend the extra money it'll be wasted when the system repeatedly fails and you end up replacing the chain prematurely. I stick to the old fashioned spray can these days, never let me down!
    If lubing the chain is a pain then get a shaft drive folks, don't waste your hard earned cash on this....

      Nooooooooo! Sadly I've had one chain oiler pack up, so i accept that its a real possibility. Hoping there have been improvements! I'm not so worried about the one side thing. The other side appears to be wet, so at least some oil is getting there. Surely with these new-fangled sealed chains it's must important just to keep it wet (that's what she said) and reduce the friction between rollers and sprocket? We'll see. If it doesn't give up this year, maybe I'll get the dual jobby. If it does, I'll have a tantrum on camera! Cheers for watching!

      Centripetal. The actual force, the reaction to which is the ‚apparent‘ force that we all know and love, centrifugal force.

      @@AndyManCam to my knowledge centripetal force would be the one acting inwards - in this case friction opposing oil being moved outwards as opposed to centrifugal force acting outwards in this case on oil being deposited on the spinning sprocket and oil travelling towards chain on outer border of the sprocket, but what do I know..

The only difference is that centripetal force is pulling directly inward to the center of the circle, whereas centrifugal force is the perceived feeling of being thrown away from the center of the circle when in actual fact the ‚subject‘ is trying to travel forwards, tangentially to the circle.
