As a DO, and an ophthalmologist in an allopathic (MD) program I found this a great interview. Touches on topics I wish I heard about when applying to medical school. Competitive subspecialties present with challenges for the Osteopathic medical student, but it can be done. Good luck!

I just finished scribing for a level I trauma ER and I heard horrible things for DO and one should go to MD bla bla but I just have to say the head of the ER is a DO and I honestly loved ll the DO 's I worked with ! I loved the MDs too lol but I felt like DO's there were much more "friendly" to the patients no offense to MDs just something I noticed

Very attractive as an internal practitioner, unfortunately a DO is not as respected as an MD from patient views (which I’ll never understand). Many more competitive students enter an MD program, which therefore makes getting into more competitive specialties much much more difficult. As a Trauma surgeon, at a large university hospital I only work with 4 DOs as surgeons vs about 50-60 MDs. I actually learned quite a bit about the DO side of medicine from Dr. Tosounian. Just to clarify the university I work at is ONLY an allopathic medical school, which is also part of why I work with so few DOs.

As a patient I once had a neck injury that was causing migraines I then went to an M.D. who proceeded to put me on muscle relaxers and pain meds after that didn’t work. I thought about a D.O. I used to go to as a kid and had him look at it. He told me to lye down he then proceeded to give me a neck adjustment and guess what? 1 day later no migraines. None since and that was 42 yrs ago. When the M.D. found out I went to another doctor his ego was blown. He had his receptionist tell me to take my business elsewhere. Which I was glad I did. This is not a put down concerning M. D.’ Just a situation unique to me .

I toured LECOM and it's a really nice school!
it's a great school. there is a lot of hate thrown at lecom but most of it is for petty things like dress codes and food and drink policies.
I understand that those who are DOs must feel like it's an uphill battle post degree. And I'll say that some DO primary care physicians are top rate. Some, I think have better people skills and are great for common conditions.
However, for very specialized fields, as a patient I'm more comfortable with someone who has very scientific aptitude. When I see the average DO stats and see that DO schools are basically safeties if you can't get into MD, I'm less comfortable. That's not to say that someone who's a DO in a competitive specialty is weaker, they probably had to prove themselves after and they've earned it. But the latest stats that came out had average MCAT matriculants for DO at like 501 vs. 513 for MD?
I'm gonna get a lot of downvotes for this, but that's a huge discrepancy. Unless the DO schools raise their standards after a merger, I just don't see how this would be fair to MDs.
Hey Andrea! First I just wanted to say I absolutely love your videos and being a Pre-med I find them very useful. I've learned so much from them, especially things I didn't know before. I was wondering from your Point of view, what is the best paitient care experience to do before med school? I plan on going to become a Doctor of course and some schools I've looked at don't require the experience, but they do want to see that you have an idea of what your doing in the field. I've looked at Medical Assistant and CNA. Someone I know is actually becoming a RN and then going to Med school. It's just been very confusing figuring what to do as far as that. I definantly want the experience whether it's required or not because you get an idea what it's like to work in that area and really see what you'll be getting into as time goes.
+Foula Tourikis Shadowing or volunteering are great ways to get experience! Sometimes you can volunteer at low income clinics. Otherwise EMT, CNA, etc.- there are tons of great ways to get medical experience, it just depends on what you are interested in!

Could you interview an Anesthesiologist please! I'm interested in what they think the future holds for anesthesia, and if CRNA's are going to become the standard.
I am aware that allopathic and osteopathic medicine used to be completely different, but they sound pretty much identical today. Why does the division in schools/degrees still exist? Why can't students interested in OMM simply take those types of classes at allopathic schools? The "holistic" mindset is nice I guess, but it hardly warrants (at least from my perspective) an entirely different degree. Am I missing something?
I've been told they were going to have an MD/DO merger because there aren't many differences to the programs. They used to be much different which is how the two branches came to be
So the division mostly still exists out of tradition. A lot of old DOs don't want the profession to be swallowed up by the larger MD community. They worry that DOs will loss the unique parts and philosophies that exist in osteopathic education both historically and currently. The merger is happening in the coming years. At least for right now that only effects residencies; the purpose is to make the residency application playing field more level for DOs applying to allopathic residencies. The COMLEX in all three of its steps is still a required board exam for us after the merger but according to what we have been told the allopathic program directors are supposed to be accepting the COMLEX universally across all specialties. I'm a second year osteopathic student if that wasn't already clear.
+Isaac Smith Division is historical and there is no practical reason for two degrees to exist. However, there is an economic one and one of power for there to be 2 professions. Those people administering the COMLEX or high in the AOA hierarchy have no interest in a merger. The "holistic" thing is nothing more than BS to anyone with common sense.
As a DO student, I can say there's more to osteopathic medicine than OMM. It really is a different philosophy and a different perspective on patient care. This difference in philosophy also sends a lot of DOs into primary care where there is the most need. While the professions are pretty much identical now, I think the differences are substantial enough to justify continuing both degrees and I do enjoy the parts of my profession that make it unique. I believe we offer something special to our patients in the way of person-centered care that some MDs certainly offer, but such an approach is not engrained in allopathic training the way it is for osteopathic physicians.
Chandler Sparks I'm a DO student as well. That "philosophy and perspective" is absolute kool-aid. Wait until you get out into the world and see it.

I am new to your channel as I am only in high school. But I am very much Interested in going into the medical field. I am pretty dead set on that. I want to either be a neurosurgeon or a cardio thoracic surgeon. I just love the idea of getting to change a persons life and make a difference. Getting the chance to help heal a person can be life changing. But I was wondering while you were attending med school did you also have a job? I also really enjoy watching your videos they help me better understand the process of getting through the process of getting into the medical field.
+Tori Daughtridge I did not have a job in medical school. Most medical schools will not allow you to work. There are some exceptions to that, but most people don't work during medical school.

I'm a 21 year old BSN nursing student right now and plan on going to medical school after, but was wondering if you thought that 26 would be too old to start medical school seeing that most people are 22-23.

+Kaynen Brown I don't know where you get this, but the majority of medical students are between 25-30 and it's reflected in class age averages. I would suggest not majoring in Nursing if being a physician is your goal since it's seen negatively that a nurse was trained and just used it as a backup.
Could you please do an interview with a surgeon. Preferably a female. I would love to be a surgeon but it's very hard for a woman to be one with a family etc.

Yes! A lot of DOs go into specialties such as family medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine and OB/GYN.

Are there any resources to learn about which specialities/residencies are most competitive in regard to MD vs DO students being accepted? For example, would urology or anesthesiology be harder for a DO student to gain residency vs MD?
I've found that looking at match lists from the schools you're interested helps you to see the competitiveness for specialization. Generally, DOs place more in primary care as they're more interested in preventive medicine. You can look up to see what specialties require what board score in order to be considered as an applicant. In terms of if it's harder for one over the other: if you're a DO and you want to place in an MD residency, you have to take both the COMLEX (DO board exams) and the USMLE (MD board exam), so a total of 6 exams. There are DO only specialty positions, but usually there are more MD spots for specialties outside of primary care. At the end of the day, placement depends on your board scores, your research/volunteering, and your interview.

The only times it's acceptable to go to a DO school is if a) fail to get accepted to MD, b) have some extenuating circumstance (e.g. family) or c) Are sure you want to practice OMM. Otherwise, you're hurting your chances for residency. DOs will soon not need to do extra stuff during residency as residencies are merging under one system.

From what I've read, osteopathic students applying for these programs may actually be given more options than their allopathic counterparts, since osteopathic students can apply to both DO residencies and the fairly uncompetitive MD residencies.
Isaac Smith Bad strategy. With the merger, MDs and DOs entering for class of 2020 will be able to match all the same residencies. Except that for sure as a DO you won't be matching at Mass General because of degree bias.
