  • In this video I read my personal statement from my application to medical school, residency, and fellowship! I hadn't read these essays in years and it was so fun to go back and read these personal statements. I also share tips with you on how to write a personal statement for medical school.
    I hope you enjoy!

I actually didn't think it was cringe worthy at all, rather passionate and motivated. Seemed well worded and told a story with an intro and conclusion bringing the readers back to the start. The paragraph before last kinda got off topic it seemed to me, but damn that personal statement read better than mine currently.

it's videos like this that make me really love your videos more than any other medicine/ productivity videos out there - you're driven, you're motivating and yet you're real, and i really feel like you're talking to your audience rather than at us - so, thanks!

Honest and authentic. This one's a bull's eye for those who are struggling to write a personal statement. I would recommend this one for all my friends who are working on their personal statements. You don't get to learn these things from texts or lectures. Thank you so much for sharing Dr Tooley!!!

Hi Andrea, I just discovered your channel about a week ago (new sub). I'm subscribed to a few CZcamsrs who are medical students and doctors. My daughter is a first year med student, so I love learning about other people's journey to their medical careers. I think you're amazing and whatever other synonyms are for that word lol. Thanks for sharing your personal statements, You really will make an impact in the world of Ophthalmology because you've already begun to.

Your medical school personal statement is what I hope my middle school students who want to go into the medical field can do at that age!

No judgment! We have all said cringeworthy things in personal statements or when talking to admission committees.

Dr Tooley, I need advice. As an IMG, I applied to both fellowship and residency programs but only joined the match for residency as per the rules from the NRMP. However I'm interested in 1 fellowship program that I interviewed. If I cannot rank them as I did not enter the match, can I still write a letter of intent?

Are these condensed? The med school personal statement appears to be extremely brief & the one written for residency seems a bit short. Being that you get (i believe) 5300 characters, I would think it’s a great opportunity for the writer to expand upon who they are and how their experiences has influenced where they are today & where they aspire to go.
Any who, love your channel & your overall message to your audience.

I’m an M2 and already jotting down ideas for my residency personal statement. Thanks for sharing yours with us! I know my med school one would make me *~*cringe*~* now. I literally wrote about trees that change with the seasons but a community beneath them that doesn’t, referring to the opioid crisis and relating it to my own life. Trees?? Really?? Sending love from the University of Louisville School of Medicine!
