The Tuskegee Experiment: Crash Course Black American History #29

- From 1932 to 1972, the United States Public Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention operated an extremely unethical medical experiment on the effects of outcomes of untreated syphilis. Hundreds of poor Black men from Macon County, Alabama were enrolled in the study, and treatment for syphilis was withheld from them. Even after antibiotics became available that could cure syphilis, these men were left to suffer from the disease and expose their families to syphilis as well. Today we're learning about the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, a shameful example of racism in American medicine, and a tragedy that still impacts how many Black Americans think about healthcare today.

How is there no comments yet? Crash Course Black American History is honestly one of my favorites. Its grounded, its real, and honest education. No jokes no making light of things. I very much appreciate that especially as an American. Black History just never got treated this right back in school.
While it's true that 1972 is shockingly close to a lot of people, I want to impress on young people that the 1800s weren't that long ago either.

As someone who is not black and who was born and raised in the south with a crap education, thank you for making these. I was born and went to school in Tulsa Oklahoma. Never once in my entire education was the Tulsa Race Riots mentioned. Not one time. I had to learn about that in ARIZONA from my college professors. Just shameful.
i currently go to Tuskegee University and i actually heard about this in high school while i lived in jersey. sadly, my high school kind of glossed over it. once i got to tuskegee, i learned a lot about black history that my pwi schools from my past wouldnt teach. im thankful for the HBCU experience.
This incident has been so well hidden/unacknowledged that when "Falcon and The Winter Soldier" used it in part to tell Isaiah's origin story, people didn't believe every history buff who came out praising the use of historical context in such a way! That's sad to me; one of the ONLY public discussions about this subject (WE NEED MORE!) were had bc of a superhero show.

Maybe it's for the best that this didn't go into detail about the history of gynecology, but as a woman it does feel a bit wrong that this wasn't elaborated on at least a little more. Saying how woman were experimented on and cut into without any form of pain relief at all being the backbone of gynecology today deserves a bit more emphasis, even if just a few more sentences. Still, thank you for going into this even as much as you did.
I can’t believe that this was something that happened in the 1970s. It’s insane how this wasn’t that long ago. I can’t believe we don’t learn about the atrocity in school!
Thank you for making this video. As a White American who is a Republican, I am appalled, angry, furious, and at a loss for words. After learning about this atrocity, as well as so many others. Many of the issues I see occurring in todays world can easily be linked to atrocities like this.
We must never allow this to happen again, our people must be educated in schools about this, and we must take actions to ensure that things like this never occur again. It is my belief as of right now, that the NSA, CIA, FBI, ATF and the organization responsible for this be disbanded, destroyed, and rebuilt with safeguards and oversights in place to ensure that these things do not occur again.
Words can not express how sorry I am and feel for everyone affected by this. Even more so that Justice has not been done. Sure I believe they won a lawsuit with the help of the ACLU if I’m not mistaken? For 10 million dollars, but that doesn’t do this justice, nor is it adequate enough to compensate those who were affected by this. There were 600 participants. So if you divide 10,000,000 by 600 you get 16,666.66…. That’s only $16,666.66 for each person affected by that atrocity. That is flat out RIDICULOUS!!

And also go into the Tulsa Oklahoma massacre which specifically destroyed the black wall street of the time, was covered up by our own government, and that was assisted and facilitated by our own National Guard.

I had never heard of this study before but wow. It’s horrible how much they went through as not only a family but community. I wish all those who participated well. No one deserves to go through that.
I can’t believe I didn’t hear about Tuskegee until I took a Ethics in Medicine course in college (2010). They mentioned Tuskegee early in the semester. I left after 4 weeks, I couldn’t sit through the class. I’m convinced there is No Ethics in Medicine the US. Not in my lifetime. I’m pretty sure if this information was shared more widespread people would question doctors and medicine more often. I hope BLM are sharing this information. You did a good job with this video, thank you.

We dont't hate the opposite race but there is a large distrust due to events & oppression such as this one. Such patterns are what contributes to a large divide that we continue to see!

I am in Alabama, age 76; I have reason to believe that my father was a Study Subject; in 1989 Kaiser Doctors duped me into receiving a spinal tap. And, I want to be paid, I understand that funds have been set aside for me but I don't know how to reach the money; can y'all help me ?

Sometimes I think the devil is actually white
Sadly even if the enslaved women were free white women, they likely wouldn't have been treated better or granted the luxury of giving consent. Women have been horribly mistreated throughout the history of medicine and continue to be ignored or told our pain is "not a big deal" to this day. Studies on medications and treatment rarely includes women so our bodies are often being made to take wrong medications and dosages due to medical ignorance.
