- Many organizations have made it their mission to expand the rights of Black Americans. The NAACP and the Urban League are examples of influential organizations with long histories. But a long history or extensive membership isn't always necessary to have an impact. Today, we'll learn about the Black Panthers. They were a relatively small, relatively short-lived political party that had an outsized impact on US history.

I never learned about this in school, and I've only heard negative things about them, which I was always highly suspicious of. They helped the disability rights activists in the 1970s. I'm so greatful to finally be learning about them. Thank you crash course!!!

Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. The Black Panthers may not have been perfect. But it's frustrating that the government spent so much time, energy, and money on furthering the oppression of the Black community and suppressing the Black Panthers rather than fix the inequities and fight the injustices that gave rise to the organization in the first place. Had the Black community been granted the most basic rights of Justice and Equality from the Government and from the Police, perhaps the group would never have formed.
Next time the American government lectures you about “oppressive” countries, remember what they did to Fred Hampton

Panther Cub here, my Dad, David Hilliard was Chief of Staff. He seems to be left out here, nevertheless this was some what accurate accounts. Eldridge was an FBI agent, so many stories untold. 🖤🖤💪🏾💪🏾✊🏾

The Black Panthers had the right idea then. It's still the right idea today. The only reason things didn't work out is because it was the first time this idea had been tried. Motown didn't work right away. Michael Jordan didn't work out right away. The Nation of Islam didn't work out right away. My relationship with my woman didn't work out right away. Nothing works out right away. Doesn't mean it's not the bomb. The Black Panthers were the bomb. They clearly had the best idea for liberation. Unity. Bravery. Audacity. Retaliation. A willingness to kill and die for the cause. ✊🏾🖤💯. It's really the only way. If Black people don't survive and thrive, NO ONE survives and thrives.

I’ll just ask people who love condemning the black communities as they are today. Imagine how the black community would be today of white society had just left black Americans alone after slavery. This is one of many cases where the USA interferes with a group trying to better their community. Also understand many things Most complain about in the black community states after the BP was basically disbanded. You don’t see a rise in gangs in the black community until after BP is disbanded. A rise in drug usage, crime, teenage mothers, etc. I hate when these things aren’t addressed when many want to speak about what’s happening in our communities
There's so much misinformation about the Black Panthers out there.
Could they monitor how the police operate and carry guns at the same time? In Spain we cannot even record the police with a cell phone at the moment. Btw great video and series. I'm deeply interested in US history, specially from the black population's point of view
Back then it was dangerous to observe police even unarmed, that's why the Panthers would do this in groups. In most states during this era it was totally legal to open carry, in fact many gun regulations in America were created directly as pretext to disarm and arrest Black Panther members and other open carrying groups during the 60s and 70s. They did more than just observe and monitor police activity, but would also give pamphlets to citizens on their rights in the event of a confrontation with police. Today while open carrying is illegal in many states, phones are the most powerful tool we have against police- as we've seen with fallout from the George Floyd protests of 2020. Because of this, history is actually repeating itself. States like Arizona are already creating new laws making it illegal to record police for any reason, a dangerous precedent that could lead to America being much more like Spain. Hope that helps understand.
There's always been a divide between what the law says the police can do and what they can get away with. This can vary wildly, especially based on location and the identity of the person they're interacting with. Back in the day the Panthers could do that sort of thing because they were organized enough to do it in coordinated groups, changing the calculus of the authorities regarding just how much they wanted to risk getting shot and starting an armed uprising that day. There's a small number of antifascist groups today that follow a similar model and show up to left-wing political actions as an openly armed unit to provide security from both the police and right-wing extremist groups like the Proud Boys. Without the benefit of high-priced lawyers or an uncle who happens to be the local district attorney or chief of police, the potential for grievous bodily injury must stand in for the deterrent effects of money and influence.
On the subject of filming police, it'll likely come down to the states to decide if they want to outlaw it or not. It's not going to stop anyone, though. It'll just incentivize streaming the encounter rather than just saving it to the phone. Ultimately, though, the arguments against the right to film police seem to be predicated to the police's "right to privacy" that nobody else gets when they're doing their job in public with taxpayer money with a law-mandated bodycam on. I don't really get it, but it doesn't seem to need to make sense anymore. The police are just gonna do whatever they want unless and until an appropriate disincentive is provided.

I am glad these days Black Panther's legacy is getting more of the spotlight. For decades now, they were demonized. While some of this still happens, it is becoming less so.
Edit: As time goes on the views on Regan become more tarnished, which is a good thing.
Im a bit mixed on it, There struggle and defiance of the institution was real but their legacy is tainted by misformation and bias on both side,
The truth that they are Capital "C" Communist for one actively sour response on both side with so much mythologization, The other side often left out this fact and often view insert them in their agenda while the other use it to demonized them and contextualized their struggle and abuse as justified

My God! This is exactly what African Americans need. The Black Panthers fed kids going to school everyday and made sure they had a hot breakfast. They would've brought about education and hope plus social change throughout America. Why does our country not allow blacks the same educational resources for whites living in wealthy communtities? There is no reason for students in Detroit to not have books, computers, heat, air conditioning, protection and security that other cities have. God bless any African American high school student that graduates from an inner-city school. The odds are stacked against them. It's total BS. Think of the intelligent minds being wasted because they don't have a chance and what those intelligent minds could do to better our world. Its just shameful. For those students and parents living in big cities with poor/corrupt schooling, I pray that he/she makes it through the gauntlet and becomes successful and changes America and the world for the positive.
What an incredible informative video, im.white but see why its needed .as a kid growing up in a multi cultural city, during riots, never experiencing anything but love and acceptance. My first real love was with somebody who I think was a panther. Smartest , giving and supplied me with incredible art that waa being put up and given out close to where I believe was their headquarters. I loved the art , being a mad magazine addict, it made me laugh, esp after being forced to watch all the evil being done against blacks bewsreels..my dad hated all racism, and said all hate is wrong .n tore them.down , but have collected them thru out my life time, really seeing things still haven't changed. I'm christian but love honorable minister louis farahkhan, I went thru and worked thru kings equal opportunity program, you remind me of those great smart men who ran program and walked hand in hand with king, whose every message and you tube video out there is as relevant today and underline he was a messenger chosen by God! Ugh! U missed the PERFECT OPPORTUNITY to show the Black Panther Party & Malcolm X's assassination connection that led to Reagan & California pushing for gun control when you mentioned the May 1967 protest in Sacramento! Ppl have tried to portray the protest as the event that caused the legislation, unlike u presenting it correctly that the introduction of gun control legislation as the event that caused the protest.
Malcom X's assassination is connected to the gun control legislation indirectly. The legislation was introduced in the California legislature mere weeks after the BPP was the armed security detail to escort a widowed Sister Betty Shabazz from the San Francisco airport to an interview.
Misogyny and sexism must be dealt with if men want a civil society.
