    Something you didn't mention was that you need to "feather" the edges of the area you touched up. Your repaint shows up because you left a sharp edge around the circle. Lightly spread the new paint over a large area to make it blend in better with the old paint. That's called "feathering".

      I've been working at a body shop for a bit now and extra tips I learned was if you're painting the door, it's better to take off the mirror and belt molding (the trim at the bottom of the window) for a better paint job in the end. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding.

    • @chrishebert5672
      @chrishebert5672 Před rokem +9

      @@NSDaishi Feathering is simply spreading the paint out thinner and thinner into the area surrounding the patch. The patched area may be 2-3 inches across. You paint that area but you lightly brush paint outward to perhaps 8-12 inches to blend it in with the surrounding paint. Makes the newly-painted area invisible.

    I absolutely agree with the Sherwin Williams recommendation for color matching. I have been to all the major paint suppliers in my area and SW does the best color matching by far. I like to grab a color sample from a closet down near the baseboard and preferably on the door side so no one will ever see it.

    Something you didn’t mention was the order of sheen a person can apply over the existing paint sheen. For example, if the wall was flat sheen, then any other sheen if need be. But, if it were a gloss sheen, then everything below that sheen level would potentially have poor adhesion and would not dry properly. Think of a ladder. First step is flat, then second is satin/eggshell, third is semi-gloss, fourth is gloss. You can go up, but you can’t come down without surface prep.

    Weenie roller with paint that was used to originally used..any match that isn't exactly brand, and exact type and sheen..any other "color match" is corner to corner repaint..all paint stores have only salesmen. Most have never painted more than maybe their own house . Always drop off "color matches" to let them work on the match, it will 100% come out closer than if you wait. Their color eye gets them close so they can adjust it by hand. Eggshell is interior saying is trim and exterior .semi gloss is kitchen and bath for water moisture resistance..

    Orange peel texture is done with special consistency joint compound, it's not from the paint roller. You can buy a spray can of wall texture that makes it super easy but it's very expensive.

    do you know how i can solve this without repainting the whole wall as the other 3 walls are perfect
    if i was to nearly dab and dry brush the paint on would that help and make it look lighter and its the same tin of paint and mixed thoroughly
    thanks in advance 👍🏻

    And for matching a wall with texture after you repaired and need to mud a large area, use a crumpled plastic bag to dab and pull the final coat of mud while still fairly wet. Thinning or thickening the mud will have different effects that you can test for match.

    With flat paint on walls I just use a cheap chip brush and use the tips hitting the wall straight on...its called "stippling"...then I feather it out in a Irregular broken up pattern...like don't do a perfect circle...it has to be assymetrical and go out a few inches from the center spot so there are no sharp visible lines of a touch up.

  • @audiobrad99
    @audiobrad99 Před 4 měsíci

    I'm not sure if painting such a larger diameter spot (even with feathering) is better than confining your touchup to just the patch itself. I try to minimize the spread of mud/spackle, sand carefully, and dab just the patched area. You have four spots close together so it's a borderline case, but if you keep the repair small, then you can sometimes apply a dab of paint no bigger than a dime which the eye can more easily miss than a large paint spot--especially if the sheen and color don't match perfectly.

    The flat matches best. So, not going with flat, say, satin, wouldn't have been the best choice.
    Personally, I always use flat for all walls, except for the kitchen and bathroom. There I use semi gloss. Same with painting trim. I hate eggshell as it doesn't blend or feather out well.
    One thing about color fan decks it the sheen on the deck cards often is more glossy than a flat paint and less than a glossy paint. And you need to take lighting into consideration when matching. As a last resort for color matching would be to take as good a picture as possible with a cellphone and take that to the paint store. Had pretty good luck with color matching that way.
    Good vid.👍

    I have a theory that I haven't tried admittedly. When a paint sits on the wall for a period of time, it seems to get duller. Would it be a good idea to buy a small touch-up can of the same color but one finish flatter? Even when I have a can of the original paint and touch it up years later, the paint from the can seems shinier than the existing wall sheen even though both are from the exact same bucket.

    • @GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou
      @GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou Před rokem +1

      Yes, there are environmental and life factors that do deteriorate many substances, including painted surfaces. You can try that, but it is unlikely to result in anywhere close to a marginal match. You would almost certainly get into a situation of diminishing returns; _however,_ this is the kind of thing that might surprise everyone with great success. I say, experiment with different techniques. It's only some paint, the cost of failure may not be too high, but the gain of knowledge could be invaluable.

Alwayd label any left over paint and keep it where it wont freeze, get the lid back on tight or it will dry out .if there is a skim over the left over..remove stir and try a small spot..its time fory own channel..
