RAM 1500 Unlocking Off-Road 4x4 Performance | How to Turn Your Traction Control ALL The Way Off

- How to easily improve and unlock your off-road performance in your RAM 1500. the key is to FULLY turn off your traction control aka also turn off your Electrotonic Stability Control. This videos summarizes my own real world 4x4 testing and how fully turning off your traction control and your ESC can great improve your off-road performance.
I've had this truck for 3 years now and was not aware about the ESC system so I figured a lot of you guys would know about this either. This ESC system is different then just your traction control system whereas the ESC takes your abs wheel speed sensors and many other driving inputs into consideration to decide what to do with the truck. the best example of this is when in 4wd lock with the rear wheels spinning at different speeds then the front wheels and the steering wheels turned. The ESC thinks the truck is in a spin out condition and will actively cut power to the front driveshaft. which is exactly what you don't want when you are stuck somewhere and the truck is actively cutting power to the front wheels.
obviously the Electronic Stability Control has benefits like when you are actually in a spin out situation it can dramatically improve the results and maybe even keep you on the road. So before you go ripping out fuses realize its there in the first place to help you. BUT when already in a 4x4 situation this system will hold you back. so turning the ESC off will ensure you get as much power to the wheels as you possibly can.
hope you guys liked the video!
I have had two rams a 2011 and now a 2015 didn't know this was such a thing and probably would still go on not knowing much appreciated!
Just happy I can relay the information! so if you ever find yourself really stuck hopefully this will help!
This channel just came up in my feed, a good ol BC boy, how could I not subscribe. Thanks for the tip on the ECS.
Yes Sir! thanks for the sub!
That was helpful appreciate your insight watching your video as much easier than trying to go through the owner's manual
I encountered snow last night and I felt like an idiot on my 3500 because I did not know about it, thank you for sharing!!!
I’ve had my truck for 27 years and did not know that. Thank you.
I’ve had my truck nine years and I didn’t know that, thank you
happy you now know! cheers
Just got my truck. I am so glad to come across this video. Liked and subscribed.
Happy you liked to video!
I have my truck for 4 years and did not know that. Thank you.
exactly why I made this video. thanks for the feedback!
I have mine since 2014 and didn’t knew about that esc! Thx man!!!!!
Happy to help, thanks for the feedback!
Thanks man for the video, it’s very important information when you go off-roading. I just got back from camping in the desert I faced the same problem in my 2018 Dodge Durango 4WD R/T V8 model. I was very frustrated as I was stuck and I literally felt the engine cutting off. This why I was looking everywhere in the internet until I found your video, I’m gonna try this afternoon and hopefully it will work.
Thanks man again 👍
well good luck sir! This will give the truck the best chance to get out. Hopefully it all works out for you!
How was it is it working?
I’m so glad I found this video. I would have never known about this
I have a 2015 and I had no idea about the ESC system. Thanks buddy definitely will be helpful the next time I need to use 4wd 👍🏻
Awesome! glad to help
... how did this option turn out?
Just got a Ram 2020 Warlock. 2.5 level on 35x12.5r20. She is a beast and with the knowledge of ESC I can imagine how much more of a beast its going to be. I have installed totalflow exhaust as well and can feel signific torque gains. Looking forward to trying it out in our recent snow storm. I also have the LSD which is amazing at locking my rear tires when traction control is disabled. I was told if you press tow haul it also disables alot of the ecs and traction as well as adds low end power. Not sure if this is true but with the 392 dif ratio it certainly feels like a torque beast.
Thank you for that I just bought a 2021 Ram and I didn't know that. That will definitely help
Underrated channel thanks man
no thank you, really appreciate the positive feedback!
I have a 2018 big horn 4x4 crew cab Thanks bro I got my stuck and front wheels would move so next time I will try this out.
I just got a 2018 ram last year. I didn't know esc off. Thanks 👍
I have had a 2014 since 2014 and this is new to me...thanks!
just like me. I didn't know this for a long time!
Good stuff man, keep up the good work!
thank you!
I just got my 2016 and I am so glad I saw this, Thanks a lot
Happy you like it!
Thanks for the video. I just got my 2014 Ram. It’s good to know this here in North Dakota.
yes sir! do you guys get a lot snow up there? or is it more so just cold ?
Thanks. Great explanation. Had mine near 2 yrs now only thought to turn off esc.. will now hold that damn button. Cheers
makes a big difference!
Thank you I just bought one and so glad I found out!!!
Wish I had known this sooner. Thanks for the tip.
Yeah I didn’t know this thanks. Was wondering why I felt like the 4x4 in this truck sucked compared to my 00 Durango now I know
Didn't know this! As soon as I've crossed the interest/principle threshold on the loan, I'll give it a try! 🇨🇦 bring on the snow and mud!
I had no idea.... Thank you!!!!
Holy crap i didnt know that. Thanks for the tip. I would just take off traction but didnt know i could hold it down and turn it off even more.
yes sir and it makes a pretty big difference!
Just figured this out this past weekend went to some sand dunes first time with this truck and it was dogging af. I was like the hell is going on turns out esc was still on. Made a world of difference.
Ya it does make a pretty good difference!
I’m also a dumm dumm thanks dude it’s fantastic and answer my doubts about having diff lock 🙏👍
Great information. Thank you
I'm trying to get mine out of off road mode. I'm getting ready to try what you said. Mine is a 2017 Laramie Longhorn Hemi. I didn't know this. Thanks.
Thank you for that. Helpfull for me .
I didn't know that either good video!
Thank you sir! Happy you liked it
Thank you this was very useful
happy you found it useful!
Thank you, I will try it!
Thanks for the info!
I’ve had my truck for 2years and didn’t know that. I appreciate it
Did not know that. Thanks for the information.
awesome! Happy you took something away from this
Don't mind your actually being used truck you mean 👍🏼. Thank you for this information.
haha yes she's a daily driver. thanks for the feedback!
had no idea.. thank you !
Great video
thank you!
You are not the only idiot....love learning new things for my Dodge. Thanks a bunch.
Great info, didn't know that
Thanks so much I learn something new
good to hear!
Very helpful
Hey Alex, I have a 2015 ram ecodiesel 4x4. Thanks for this information. I wonder if you have thought an upgrade of the differential to a locking differential is possible and how much and difficult that might be. Could be a new video idea for the Canadian Heavy Duty Mechanic! Thanks again for everything you are doing!
I just tested it minutes ago, we got a foot of snow in NY. It's ez, just hold down that Traction control button, hold a few seconds and I got ESC Turned Off. I went to a nice parking lot, in just snow it made a difference, takes off much faster. I have a 2018 Hemi Bighorn. This guy is spot on, a lot of people definitely did not know this, every other house in my neighborhood is a Ram I'm spreading the word. I didn't see it in the owners Manua Bookl/Display
one word of caution I'll say is when doing this, your more likely to burn up that clutch pack in the transfercase but if you are in some deep snow this will help alot!
For those of you who have a 2012/2013 ram with a specific software installed on the ecm you may not be able to do burnouts despite your buddies ram doing them just fine, the reason for this is because of your ABS/ESC cutting power to prevent wheel spin. An easy fix is to pull the fuse f26 because you can only turn ESC off in 4x4 which is no good for burnouts. So for the next car show just pull fuse f26. (Note that not all 2013 trucks worn burnout only specific trucks with specific softwares installed on them).
Thanks for the info! I am on my second ram 1500, the second one is four-wheel drive. Good to know. So it looks like the four-wheel drive is not working at its full potential until you turn off the ESC. It's interesting, because my Jeep JK in 4 low would automatically turn off the ESC.
In low it will automatically turn it off
Does the ESC automatically turn back on when you default back to 2wd? Or do you have to manually go back in to turn it back on? I'm new to this and I really appreciate this information you posted
That was helpful thank you for the information, I used to unplug the fuse from the fuse box in order to turn off the E S C
Well either way works!
What fuse is that again? The one to turn off the ESC?
@@Dylan-xm3es fuse 26 I believe.
@@TheGettyAdventures alright thank you👍

The 44 series transfer case comes with auto but uses clutches to attach the front drive shaft. The 45 which doesn't have auto is a direct lock. But you can't be on dry hard surface or it'll bind and snap something
ya you can't be driving in 4wd on dry pavement. that's a terrible idea with any transfer case
Great video. I have a 2014 Ram 3500 with 6 speed manual. If I have it in 4x4 HI and turn off the traction control by holding the button for 4 seconds it will disable ESC as you say. But mine when I put it in 4x4 LOW it automatically turns off Traction Control and ESC with no need to press Traction control or hold Traction Control. Maybe different than the 1500.
This is still good to know as I did not know of the 4x4 Hi trick. I also because of the 6 speed manual with a dual disc clutch and I tow a Toy Hauler I installed a harness which can disengage the front axle to give me 2 wheel LOW which is great for backing up with Toy Hauler and still turn steering from stop to stop.
that's an awesome feature! 2wd Low for pulling would be great to have!
My Ram 1500 does the same as yours. When turning on 4 wheel lock it disables traction control automatically and if I hold the traction button down for a few seconds it disables the ESC function. In 4 wheel low it does this automatically!
Editing on point
happy you liked it!
Pressing the ESC button once...."Mr Squiggles" lights up and wants to have a good time
Try having a good time..."Mrs Squiggles" flashes above "Mr Squiggles" telling him to cut his shit and get in the house.
Didn't know this. Did a whole dirt road trip (100+ miles) staying in 2 wheel drive because I didn't like handling in 4x4 high
I've had my Laramie 2 years and didn't know this. Thanks!
happy you liked the video!
Thanks!
You bet!
How do you turn it back on? Hold down the button like it was turned off? should this be turned off anytime using 4x4 say in a snow storm?
I just purchased a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 laramie the abs light and traction control light are on and ESC is off. How do you turn ESC back on?? I seen something that said once you put into park it will automatically turn it on?? Assuming it would also turn traction control on and abs on? But the catch is both lights stay on even after putting into park any ideas on what could be wrong ?
Thanks man
happy you liked it!
There’s a dude (up in Canada) that make a “lock switch” which will make the BW 44-44 “lock” and operate like the BW 44-45.
That combined with ESC off and the truck performs pretty decent.
I have also heard about something similar to that. I would probably greatly help. However, the clutch pack will always have some slip so the bw44-45 would still technically be a better transfer case but I doubt anybody could truly tell the difference at that point.
@@TheGettyAdventures there might be but from what I’ve read the clamping force applied is something astronomically high and the clutch pack won’t slip unless the clutches are worn. Also, as info, the internals of the 44-44 are beefier per the folks at Rockland Standard Gear. They sell upgraded clutches (or at least they used too).
Either way, like the channel man!
@@danielrydza6024 thanks for the info! the folks at Rockland standard gear probably know exactly what they are talking about and I'm not gonna argue about that lol really appreciate the informative comments. cheers
Thx bro
My F-150 work truck is the same way so I tried to do the same thing on my '11 1500... But nothing happens! Weird. Thanks for your videos though, I love all of your shots of different angles to see how everything is actually operating in 4wd scenarios.
Thank you. I was super interested how my truck would handle 4x4 situations and I figured a lot folks would also be interested. It also depends on what kind of transfer case you have, on the Ram 1500's if you don't have the clutch pack transfer case (no 4WD AUTO option) your front driveshaft is always truly locked in and the truck can't stop power from going to the front driveshaft like it can with the clutch pack transfer case. So there is more then one variable at play lol
I hear that pulling the ESC fuse helps with burnouts and donuts too.
Nice , I don't have that auto option.. mine is a hemi long box 4x4 8 speed 3.21
good for you sir! the old school transfer case is the way to go. Wish I knew that before I bought my truck
Thanks, I forgot this.
Ok dumb question. Fter the ESC is turned off. To turn it back on just press the Traction control button? Does the ESC turn back on when you just press the button again and make the light go away?
I think this apply to 2012 as well right? Because I noticed your truck is newer
I was about to throw my truck away! Thank you so much for this video!
I didn't know that. Is it safe to turn it off completely?
Is there a way to turn traction control off completely when its in two wheel drive?
Only with 4 wheel drive? Can I turn if off permanently in 2wd? 2019 Ram? Any info appreciated.. thanks..
So when i take the truck out of 4 Lock, will the ESC and traction control automatically restore or do i need to do something else? Thanks.
Thanks did not know
I didn’t know that until I figured it out the other day by accident. They only told me how to turn off traction control at the dealership
Thanks for the f26 hint
Didn't know that. How do you turn it back on then.
i did know that but it turns on again when you go above a certain speed (forgot how much) which is not good enough. removing the fuse is the solution for me.
My 2017 3500 automatically turns off ESC when it's put in 4Lo. I will try to turn off ESC in 4Hi and see what happens.
The problem is you have the versiono of the truck where to transfer case has clutch packs connecting the front driveshaft to the transfer case. You can tell if you have this version because of the part time 4wd setting on the top left. The Upper models came with this for a auto 4wd conveinience. Even with everything turned off you still have clutches that are designed to slip. the transfer case in the cheaper ram models like mine, the ST have a regular mechanical gear connecting the front drive shaft.
nailed it on the head sir! those clutches will always slip if there is too much pressure on the transfer case which is not good for off road situations lol
My 2014 outdoorsman auto does this! It says esc system off when I switch to 4x4
pro tip. ditch the bw 44-44 transfer case ,swap in the 44-45.
and locking differential is a must.
could not agree more!
Good video. I learned the hard way while knowing nothing about the ESC. While completely losing traction while trying to climb an icy hill, the wheels just STOPPED turning, or at least it felt like it. Consequently I did an uncontrolled slide smack back into a hardened ice berm and it crumpled my rear bumper and took out my left tail light. I thought WTF!? The wheels stopped turning? Yes they did, otherwise I would have made it no problem . That screw up cost me $1200 worth of parts and labor. $400 for an after market bumper and $700 worth of shipping to Alaska. That's right. If you want to move to Alaska, prepare to get bent over by FedEx and UPS. They are rape artists. Their cost to ship by air via a major airline is Approx. $290 for which they charge you $1500 or so, so I had to get raped by ground. Ugh. Live and learn.
Sounds like you should have just made an insurance claim.
Good video.
BW 44-44 vs BW 44-45 video would be awesome!
working on getting one on the channel!!
@@TheGettyAdventures where do you live?
@@TheGettyAdventures I have a 2019 classic slt with the 45. I live in Tennessee, but you are welcome to borrow it if you are close
Hi sir,
I do have another stupid Q
on my dodge ram 2019 big horn signal cap it disables the ESC automaticly if you put it on 4 low.
but !!! if i pull the airbag fuse it diable the traction control off which wont allow me to disable ESC off while in 4 high. so i am asking if there are any way to disable the ESC on 4 high with airbag fuse not connected because I dont want go offroading with aribag on, also I dont want to lose some power:(
get a tuner. I personally don't have one but alot of people like them and you can freely turn off your traction control and ESC whenever you want.
Is this the same for the six speed...
How fast can you travel with it off? In a snow storm.
I assume it resets every time you restart the truck?
I have a 2010 4 x 4 4.7 engine mine has four-wheel-drive switch and a 4 Wheel Dr. low when I use 4 WD Low Well that solve the problem?
yup 4wd low will remove all electronic controls thankfully!
Nice to know that now to turn it all back on do you need to turn truck off or just press traction control button on again?
Yes that will turn everything back on. putting the truck in park will reset everything as well. or once you go back to 2wd.
Wow thanks never would of known that now u can have more fun in the snow
Does this work on 18s? Tradesman’s?
Will it work with my 2012, 4×4
So is it better to have traction control and esc off when driving in snow all the time or just when you are stuck
Good question that's what I would like to know
Question, is your rear differential limited slip or open? I have an open rear differential so I would expect only one rear wheel to be spinning. Am I wrong?
She's an open differential! And yes, unfortunately only one wheel is going to spin at the rear in most circumstances
I am a 7 year dummy . Thanks for the info.. Question is it only good to use it in a off-road situation.. what about rain and snow?..
You could but I wouldn't. in rain there is still a lot of road traction and when turning in 4wd with those clutches always locked up you could damage them. 4wd auto is perfect for those situations and is the reason why it's there.
I would honestly only turn the ESC system off when you are in some deep snow or mud and really need the full capability of the truck. you are putting more stress on the driveline and components and wouldn't want to do that on a regular basis if that makes sense
my ram 1500 classic 2020 jerks while its on 4wd lock when i had my steering wheel fully turned to the left or right. I have not tried this suggestion, but can u please let me know why it jerks? I am driving in a snowy condition that’s y i put it to that mode. otherwise, i am always at 2wd mode. I cannot see anything in the manual that explains that jerky attitude of the vehicle
do you have a 4wd auto option? if so, you may be experiencing some transfer case clutch slippage. Could also the truck disengaging and engaging the front driveshaft. could be bad CV axle. should be warranty on that truck. take it into the dealer and see what they say.
