  • How to create a texture and distress the chalk paint to create the beautiful multiply layers.
if you are interested to make something like this see the detailed description below. Or just enjoy watching!
For this project I've used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint: 'Svenska Blue", ''Primer Red", "Duck Egg Blue" and "Original White' and the Waxes: clear and black.
I've used one small brush washing it after each color. No point to use a few as they will be destroyed after you finish with the piece. We're creating a texture and don't forget to dry your brush after washing it (just with a shop towel).
    #1 Clean the piece
#2 Mixing each paint with a saw dust and a 'plaster of Paris'. Some paint I mixed with just a saw dust, other just with a 'plaster of Paris' or both. Also I used different ratio: one to one or a bit more or a bit less. This create a different kind of texture in each paint
#3 'Primer red' first: 2 spoons of the paint mixed with a spoon of a saw dust and a half spoon of a plaster applying mostly into the corners and edges. All paint I am applying by dabbing or stippling the paint. This is very important for creating a texture. Let it completely dry as mixing with lighter paint it will become pink
#4 I've mixed a 'svenska blue' with the 'original', a saw dust, a plaster and spoon of a kitchen salt, and applying it randomly filling in the gaps. Applying each color I am also overlapping other colors as in the end, when I will be distressing, the different colors will shine through
#5 a 'florence' mixed with a saw dust
#6 applying a 'duck egg blue', filling in the gaps and also over other paints. Give each paint to dry at least for a while that they wouldn't mix
#7 I let the piece completely dry and covered it with the 'original' brushing it normally
#8 Let it dry well before distressing. Then I've distressed the whole piece exposing other colors.
To finish I've covered the piece with the clear wax, then applied a black wax into the corners and ever so slightly brushed the entire piece with the black wax wiping the excesses with the clear wax.
I deliberately left some paint on the glass. I want to use it as a frame for the black-and-white photographs and I think, the mixture of colors will create an additional frame.
If you want to try, good luck to you! it is a lot easier than you might think, a bit messy though. Let me know in the comment below what you think of this technique and the colors I've chosen.
