@@HomeRenoVisionDIY That's awesome, right on. I guess it does lol. My grandfather was a longshoreman in Philadelphia, but he was pretty handy and over the course of like 30 years he re-did about every room in their house, he had me and my brother helping ever since we could understand basic instruction and could hold a tool in our hands, haha. And my dad was just a barber and owned a barber shop, but he was a cool guy. The most "handy" thing I did with him was we filled a pothole once in front of his shop, hahahaha.

In a lot of cases the shut off valve has not been closed in so long that the washer has dried out and the water will cause a flood. If you turn off the water first then you can double check and have time and access to remedy the situation if it occurs.

This may seem too simple: After the plunger I use a old hand towel to mop up the water out of the toilet and squeeze it out in a bucket. Takes a minute or two then there is NO water in the toilet. The plastic bag is still a good idea because you don't know what the wax ring area around the bottom of the toilet looks like. It could be gross it you're removing the toilet itself for cause.

That plunger was the wrong shape for that toilet and did nothing to move water. I prefer the bucket flush method for this. The tools you used on the cap and nuts served to damage them, which is dumb if you are only removing the toilet to paint, put down flooring, or just need it out of the way for another project and plan to reinstall it with the same caps and hardware. I could go on, but I'll leave it at that. Ultimately you got the job done if a bit sloppy. One thing I do in the rare case I'm completely replacing a toilet is to use a handtruck with a strap to wheel the toilet around and out of the house rather than use my back and risk injury. If I'm just moving it out of the way I'll use a flat furniture dolly and will roll it around with that.
