- Join me for some flying and a detailed look at the Mooney. The featured aircraft in this video is a 1961 M20B and it's a truly fantastic aircraft to fly. It's quick and efficient but there is not a lot of spare room in this short body version of the airplane. If your looking for a good cross country airplane this is certainly an aircraft to consider. With a wide range of models and price points you should be able to find the right fit for your budget and desires.

I love your Airplane reviews. Keep them coming!
I am really glad your enjoying the reviews. I hope to have another airplane review complete in the next few weeks. I am so sorry about my delayed response as I really appreciate your comments. Happy tail winds.
@Fastback Flying - Several years ago I helped out a gentleman that was flying a Canadian registered G Model. He was stranded on Christmas Eve at my mid Atlantic airport with a low voltage issue. It was a minor short and was easily remedied. Weird to hear the story recounted in a video several years later. Say hi to Stephen if indeed we're speaking of the same person.
Yes we certainly are speaking of the same person and I will send him your regards.
I can't state enough how much I love these review vids. When can we expect a Lake review?
Might be a while before I can figure out getting my hands on a Lake but I will try for a Teal review soon!
I own a B model and I’m 6 ft 5 . I have plenty of headroom and with the seat all the way back I can barely reach the pedals so I find your review of the interior space somewhat inaccurate however the rest was spot on. Definitely a fast XC airplane with economical fuel burn and very responsive👍 Great review..
Yes certainly lots of space if you don't intend on having a passenger in the rear seat. I should have made that more clear. Thank you for the comment and I am glad you enjoyed the review.
Mooney also offered two different size extensions for the rudder pedals which would impact your leg room experience in the airplane.
@@brianlott7571 I did not know that. Very interesting.
BTW F model got 5" in rear seat and 5" in baggage compartment for 10" total. Quite a bit more space by GA standards. Also 150lb MGW bump.
It really is a massive increase in length and weight.
my '67 F executive has the johnson bar gear, and hydraulic flaps. Your seating position seems a lot higher than mine, I'm 6' and my shoulders are almost even with the bottom of the front windows.
Very good review. I rarely see anyone mention the F models. It's hard to find much information about these aircraft
Thanks for your comments and I am glad you enjoyed the video. It could be that there is extra foam in the seat cushion and that is what is making me sit higher. How have your hydraulic flaps treated you? Any issues with them?
@@fastbackflying853 the plane has been trouble free for the most part. The flaps are kind of slow to retract but I’ve been getting along with them so far so good.
Awesome love money airplanes
They really are fantastic!
I got a quote for an M20C being a zero time Mooney pilot and 350TT. Quoted on 7/6/22 and it was $2,300/year. From Avemco. AOPA quoted us at like $4,000. I just laughed and said no.
That's an amazing price difference!
Awesome! I saw a Mooney M20a model for sale, and trying to find insurance.
Lots of wood construction in the A model so a good purchase inspection is recommended to ensure you don't have issues. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the airplane.
@@fastbackflying853 Yeah. It has a metal tail, and fiberglass wings. It's a nice airplane but insurance is still a wild card, and an instructor who can teach flying on well.
Let me know if something pops up out east for sale. 50k under, cherokee 160, 180, or Mooney M20C.
@@ajaypalmann okay I will let you know. Where abouts are you? What is insurance telling you for cost and who have you inquired with?
I live in Edmonton. I inquired with Magnes and Marsh.
@@ajaypalmann Marsh is who I would have recommended they seem to be the most reasonable at the moment. You a little far away for me to do some training with you but if I end up heading out your way I will let you know. Lol
What cost 20k on the gear in 2400 hr airframe?
The aircraft needed the gear completely removing in order to blast, inspect and paint. A number of retraction tubes needed replacing due to corrosion. All the shock disks were changed, new spindles installed. New brakes and lines, tires and tubes. A lot of neglect and sitting for many years.
@@fastbackflying853 I flew a 48 gal C 840 m nonstop from St Louis to S. Jersey in 6 hours at 11,500 ft and 140 mph TAS zero wind. Arrived with 12 gallons ( two hours ) remaining.
The Mooney actually is 43.5 inches wide and the musketeers are only 42 inches wide
Mooney claims 43.5 but they must have had a special measuring tape to get that dimension. I will take an actual measurement at some point of the 2 airplanes but there is certainly more cabin width, height and space in the Musketeer compared to the M20B.
@@fastbackflying853 I flew a m20f for 10 year’s before that a Cherokee 140 had more head room in the Cherokee then the Mooney but more elbow room in the Mooney but in a Mooney you are sitting on the floor makes it feel small
are you f'ing kidding me? You are complaining about being 5'11"? The original designer of this airplane was 6'5" and designed an airplane for himself. Take a deeper dive next time!
I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying. I have no issue in the airplane at 5'11" but this model is very short in the back seat leg room. If you end up with the front seat too far aft there is no room for your rear seat passengers! That is the problem with the shorter fuselage. I hope that has clarified things.
