  • Propranolol is a prescription medication used to treat a number of different things.
It acts in your body by blocking a couple of different types of beta receptors which can help - but also causes different types of side effects. Some of them serious.
I cover those in this video.

Sir last year i was diagnose with sinus techecardia after echo & holter monitoring.
Heart rate was ranging between 80 to 156 in holter monitoring. My dr prescribed me inderal 10 mg 2 times a day. I used it about 2 & half month then gradually leave it. I usually have 80/84 PR.
But again after year i am having again issue of high pulse rate that went 100/120 on rest time with out any activity. I am again taking this medicine i usually have bp between 90/60 or 70/110 these days. With other health conditions.
I am suffering from ibs M flare. Asthma issue with sinus techecardia at the same time.
    Currently i am on.
Librax , colonil, inderal ,alkar & frisium tblet.
My concern is it okay to have inderal with low bp but with high pulse rate & specially with asthma medicine like freehale tablet & inhaler.

    Good morning from Glasgow,Scotland Dr.
I've been taking propranolol in various doses for nearly 20 years now.
Highest was 40mg thrice daily now 20mg morning and evening.
I'm also prescribed Sertraline 150mg daily and Simvastatin 40mg at night.
Was originally prescribed for anxiety after my mother died in 2004 from a heart attack aged 51.
    I'm now 50...(😮)and a overweight myself.
Almost on a daily basis I get these insane flutterings in my chest and my heart goes from as low as 37 to a high of 150 and that's without exercise!
    With exercise it's similar... 🤷🏻‍♂️
    (including walking and lifting weights)
    Had ECG etc normal....
I'm trying to get to the cause of the issue as it's scaring me to death!
I've read about too low/too high potassium levels but my GP doesn't want to listen....
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you. 🙏

Hello Curtis Alexander, Pharm.D. I have been taking Propranolol for about two years now, this past 7-10 days I was having aortic arrhythmia symptoms, my blood work is reading that not enough oxygen is getting into my blood stream I have very low BP from this and was in the ER last night although the EKG came back fine I am still going to talk with my family dr about tapering off of this medicine and hopefully he can find another to help with my BP problems, also Propranolol has created some kind of blood glucose issues in my body, all of this started when I tried to go off of my Clozapine 2 yrs ago; that is when they prescribed the BP meds to me. It's all very scary to go through since one day I was fine and could work outside in the heat, as I love to do, and then just like that I am in terrible health! and really have to monitor my body even more! Has anyone else here been through this and if so did you have to go off of the Propranolol... what other option for a BP medicine would I be put on? I hear stopping the medicine is very dangerous! I am looking for an alternative medicine to Propranolol if there is one.

    • @AskCurtis
      @AskCurtis  Před rokem +1

You will have plenty of options outside of propranolol but that is going to be very patient dependent and something you and your doctor have to discuss. Lots of factors to consider.
As far as coming off propranolol I have found most people have to do it slowly and carefully. Say 10-20% dose decrease per week and adjusted up or down based off how you are responding.

My doctor has told me on a few occasions that I can just stop taking them but I suffered horrific side effects when I tried this last year so have been reducing my pm dose by 5 mg per week then will start on my am dose when I’ve been able to come off the on dose. And advice is welcome and thank you 😊

    • @AskCurtis
      @AskCurtis  Před rokem +1

Hi Lisa - I would talk to your doctor about reducing the dose by 10-25% per week and see how you do. Everyone is different and mileage will vary.
I have found better success lowering evening dose week 1 then same decrease to morning dose next week rather than trying to reduce the evening dose all at once, first.

It’s like clockwork everyday and the pain makes me want to go to the restroom and will usually subside after half an hour with no issues for the remainder of the day. I’ve been having symptoms similar to panic attacks or an arrhythmia. I went to the cardiologist, and I’ve wore the holter, and did a stress test. Everything looked normal. My symptoms seem to be happening more often. My cardiologist just prescribed this stuff for me to take only when having symptoms, and I’m going to wear the holter again for a week. I just don’t understand being prescribed this stuff if, at least so far my heart seems okay. I’m not a big fan of taking meds, especially taking meds for something that I may not have. I’m torn on if I should try them. On one hand, when my symptoms happen, it is horrible, and I feel like I’m about to pass out, so if this would help take that feeling away, maybe it’s worth it. On the other hand I really don’t like taking meds that might not be what I need. Any advice?

How about sleep apnea? I was given 120 mg of Propranolol in 2006 for anxiety relating to palpitations caused (most likely, I don't think the doctor ever made a connection) by mild to moderate sleep apnea, diagnosed in 2005 (I refused to believe it and didn't get a CPAP. I've been on PAP therapy now since 2011). I was very functional and travelled the world for work, and didn't have significant symptoms again until 2013 and later, again, in 2023 (most likely due to not using the CPAP with diligence). Is Propranalol contraindicated for sleep apnea? The research is not clear but appears to say "no". My doctor and cardiologists don't see anything wrong with Propranolol. I did not like the way i was feleing and began to suspect Propranalol might be causing some of my "palpitations" symptoms, and began tapering down from 120 mg, probably around 2010. By 2019 i was down to 80 mg amd by 2023 i was down to 20 mg. At which point, my "palpitations" symptoms came back. I am currently back on 40 mg after an extremely difficult year.

It it possible to take it on off? For a day or a few week? After a few weeks or month is it difficult to stopp the intake? If taken just once in a while is it difficult to take the proper dosage so that it does its job but is not overwhelming or has too much sideeffects? For example anti depression medicine has to be taken for weeks so that it works and the dosage has to be build up slowly.

Cascading pharmaceuticals are spinning out of control. Bad interactions lead to more medications being prescribed, which lead to more interactions... Currently up to 17-19 meds daily, feeling overly medicated and wanting to safely wean off. Can't tell what's a symptom and what's a side effect anymore. Interactions between two medications are documented having bad interactions but where to turn for 19 medications and how they interact?

    What lowers better High BP?
    Propranolol or Metoprolol

    • @vannastarr8897
      @vannastarr8897 Před 3 měsíci

      The only thing.
That really lowers high blood pressure is a mixture of medication, managing stress levels, Hydrating properly, Eating properly, Decreasing your sodium intake And exercise. To my knowledge that's really the only things that help. And taking medication without making those other changes is pretty much slapping a bandaid on the issue.
As someone who has taken propranolol and Metoprolol/currently Metoprolol I'll give you an honest opinion
Obviously different medications are going to affect people differently...
But in my personal experience... I was prescribed Metoprolol For my high blood pressure But the only thing it has ever done is slow my heart rate and slow down my bodily functions. Never any effect on my blood pressure. And the doctors don't warn you about the possibility that it will slow down everything in your body and cause you to live with horrible bloating and constipation.
My medical record says that I "abuse laxatives" now thanks to Metoprolol.
I do need to keep my heartrate down...but I had to pair Metoprolol with losartan and that did the trick.
I already commented this about propranolol... But it did its job, Did not affect my digestive system. But if nobody else will warn you, Then just know that it may have severe psychological effects.
My personal experience with propranolol was excessive sleeping, And Gradually worsening nightmares, hallucinations, disassociation, delusions, anxiety and Got to a point that I was becoming uncontrollably and dangerously aggressive.
So I know you made this comment four months ago and I don't know what you are taking now. But regardless. This information might be helpful to someone considering these meds.

Propranolol helped me with what it was intended for BUT...I had to quit taking it due to the horrible psychological affects it had on me.
I thought it was great because not only was it doing its job but it was allowing me to get adequate sleep that I wouldn't otherwise get.
Then I started getting bizarre nightmares, And they became more and more traumatizing. To a point that even in my waking moments... I was highly emotional about the content of these nightmares.
Then I started getting startled awake by auditory hallucinations and visual hallucinations.
Including demonic laughter, Seeing demonic faces, Seeing pastel colors where there should be none, And spiders.
I was only on the medicine for a couple of months. And it escalated to a point that I started to disassociate from reality, Became paranoid and aggressive, It increased my anxiety. I started to feel like I had a split conscience.
And I became increasingly aggressive to a point that I didn't trust myself not to hurt myself or somebody else.
My doctor did not wean me off of the medicine.
But as soon as I got off of it these symptoms went away.
