Thank you for sharing! I have been taking ammitryptaline at 30 mgs now for 11 years for chronic pain and anxiety. For me personally, it has been a literal life saver and has increased the quality of life for me. Never have had weight gain or any weird symptoms, and the effects of it never faded like you mentioned for me. However, from my experience, this is the biggest con I have personally had with it...
Sleep. You crash at night, and it’s harder to get up in the morning. I will get 8-9 hours of sleep, and most of the time will still wake up really tired! It can be a huge inconvenience and will make you feel like a ZOMBIE if your someone who gets less than 6 hours of sleep a night.
Again, this is just from MY experience, and I am no doctor or professional to give advice!

I have only been on this medication for one month (for post injury nerve pain) but I’m going to come off due to the morning zombie feeling. I’m currently off work following a road accident but I need to go back soonish and there’s no way I could feeling so wiped out every morning. I’ll need to try and find another way to manage pain.

Ur story is so familiar and rings in my brain as a previous severe chronic pain sufferer of over 2 decades. Not sure what your chronic pain is but look into prolotherapy/prp. Also, if ur back pain is worse from rest, u should look into an autoimmune connection. I have axial Spondyloarthritis, recently diagnosed and never knew. Women are misdiagnosed for decades. I had unexplainable progressively worsening spinal and joint injuries since my teens. One common theme I never picked up on is I always felt worse with rest and better with activity. Prolotherapy and PRP helped heal those injuries and reduce my pain by 80%. Wish u well and feel free to drop a line. If you haven’t had any MRIs or imaging studies of your back, I’d recommend that as well.

Also you might want to consider an Teeter inversion table ( just check with your Doctor that you don't have any contraindications to use it ), I have used for my back and it's been great, also have you ever had your back x-rayed ?, a G.P can determine that it's not a bulging disc etc.

Hi! I’m so glad I found this video! I can relate to everything you said. I’m taking amitryptiline 10mg for sever back pain upon waking. I’ve been taking it for several years and the first side effect I notice was weight gain, in the first few months I gained around 5kg which I wasn’t happy with at all considering I lost a tonne of weight years ago because I was literally obese, so gaining weight after losing so much caused me more depression which I suffer with anyway. With that said my weight is steady and I’m ok with that but I feel the medication isn’t doing much now. I noticed when first taking it that my mood improved but it seems like it’s declining lately. I did stop taking the medication at one point to see how it would effect me but it does really help me to get to sleep at night and when I stop taking it I just cannot get to sleep but my head is filled with crazy stupid thoughts. I have been contemplating whether to up the dose to 20mg to see if it helps my mood but my worry is more weight gain which in turn will just make me feel more depressed. I love the medication for sleep but anything else it’s not really doing anything. I may have to go my GP and see if something different can be prescribed that doesn’t cause weight gain. Thanks for this video, it was really helpful! 😁

You are so right to consider other options. My husband has suffered chronic pain throughout his life, and a few years back took just one Amitriptyline tablet which had serious effect on him. He became not only drowsy, but unable to think straight or communicate, remaining in that state for a few days. He now carries a warning that he should never be given this drug again under any circumstances. Having spent a considerable sum on therapy in the past without sucess, he manages his situation trying to be positive, avoiding stress where possible and concentrates on yoga breathing when panic begins to set in. Gentle exercise is beneficial, and although I can't interest him in yoga, he does have hobbies and finds gardening helps, because sitting for long periods seems to aggravate his joints. He takes a good vitamin and mineral tablet each day, eats healthily, and relaxes to music to divert his mind from pain, restricting Zapain to a bare minimum because he says they have a bad effect on his brain. I have heard that vitamin D helps in pain management, but I cannot say whether this is true.
I do hope you find a successful remedy and wish you all the very best. Jen.

Nothing ever really worked until I tried Amitriptyline 2 months ago. I'm amazed how much my nerve pain has decreased. The thing is that I feel kind of groggy most of the day, tired and I've gained at least 7-8 kilos in that short time!! I’m taking Strattera 80mg which is really good for ADHD and some depression(at least the energy ). It helped me lose 90 pounds I gained from Prozac. I’m recovering from a severe concussion that’s given me post concussion syndrome and was considering amitryptaline as it functions like muscle relaxers. I’m terrified of the weight gain effect but I’m wondering if I take a stimulant with it, will I not experience that ravenous hunger? I know what you’re describing because Prozac did the same for me and made me go from 95kg to 131 KG in 3 months. I’m hoping the medication isn’t like this. I do a calorie counting diet and I also eat a normal portion, wait 15 minutes to let my brain catch up to my stomach to see if I’m still hungry, and I go from there

Hi Krystal have you ever been checked out for cubital tunnel syndrome or carpal tunnel? They can upset the neck but then also cause arm pain and numbness. For me at least my arms affect my neck as my neck on scans is more than fine. Can be known as "double crush" when a pinched nerve in your arms can then start upsetting nerves upstream. Anyways hope you are well

I'm currently on 25mg of Amitriptyline for my chronic migraines. I went on the medication end of last year and I have gained so much weight! Also I feel more hungrier, like I should be able to eat a meal and be full, but I still want more food and its annoying!! I am currently in the process with my doctors of changing it. The annoying thing is, since my dose was upped from 10mg to 25mg I feel my migraines have calmed down, I would get them 3 times a week and now it has gone down to about 1 or 2 every other week, but I don't want to be overweight! So I've gotta get a fasting blood test done first. Then my doctor will dicuss medication.
I've only just come across your video after searching 'amitriptyline and weight gain.' I hope you have made progress in your struggles, it's so sad you are having to pay out so much to get through the pain! You look so young! I'm 31 and my migraines started when I was around 15-16. Wishing you the best :)

I also got it for migraines. I was prescribed 40 mg in drops, 6 drops every evening. That was like 5 years ago. I gained 10 kg but i had no idea it was because of that. Then i also got hypothiroidism which made things worse. Io started using a pill for thyroid which is now in control but after time 6 drops wasn't enough so i increased to dosage. I went to a point where i was using 13 drops every night and i was depressed despite that. Then i found out i am gluten intolerant and started drinking more water. Those things really made me have less headaches. So i decided to stop amytriotiline for good. Boy was it hard. I tried at least three times and i had such severe withdrawal symptoms. This year in January i decided to stop really really slowly like takind one drop less every month or two depending of how i was feeling. It still was rough. When i arrived from 13 drops to 5 this summer i was feeling so bad plus i had stress in my life. I had such strong panic attacks every evening i felt my heart in my chest. So i had no choice but to take anxiety med in drops ( diazepam). It saved my life. I had already taken it in the past and had no problems when i decided to stop taking it. So now i take diazepam but i will take it for a shirt period of time hopefully while i am still going off amytriptiline. Currently i take only two drops of amytriptiline. If i had known it would be like that i woulf have never started taking it in the first place. But my doctor insisted. Because in the end it never really helped me for my headaches.

Weight gain is one of the more common side-effects of this med I noticed as it increases appetite in between 10-20% of patients, yet paradoxically it increases metabolism and is quite a stimulating drug compared to classic SSRI drugs..it's quite a unique drug being used for such a wide range of conditions, including various types of pain, neurological, physical and nerve pain, besides depression, anxiety, mood and sleep disorders..and many others health problems and conditions.
For some like myself who are underweight and doesn't eat properly or regularly that's probably a good thing, but for others who gain weight easily and already struggle with their weight, it can be a problem. You have to be careful with your diet on it if you experience that side-effect, or you can speak to your Dr I've heard and ask for another med to suppress appetite if you do start gaining weight too rapidly or have a problem managing your weight with exercise.
This med is quite unique and unusual in how it works, and how side-effects can manifest in some people and not others. It often requires a lot of experimenting to get the dosage right for each patient. Some do better at a higher dose and experience less side-effects after the first month or two, while others seem to experience more side-effects at higher doses and do better on a lower dose, that's what my Dr said.. you can go all the way up to 100-150mg on this med, so 10mg is a tiny low dose.. my Dr said the usual starting low dose is 25mg and they try to work that up gradually for optimal effect over a period of 2-3 months and often longer. If you go slowly on this med and work up the dose gradually you're less likely to experience side-effects or if you do, only mild ones.. if you experience dramatic side-effects at the low dose that persist for several weeks to a month, it may not be the med for you as you could be an ultra-fast metaboliser and those people are far more prone to experiencing side-effects and less positive effects.

Physio's aren't known for backs as much as chiropractors, also go by reviews and ratings online to find a great one, it makes all the difference. Also you might want to consider an teeter inversion table ( just check with your Doctor that you don't have any contraindications to use it ), I have used for my back and it's been great, also have you ever had your back x-rayed ?, a G.P can determine that it's not a bulging disc etc.

I've been having problems with what I think is my nervous system. I'm feeling pressure in my head and my inner ears are popping and cracking all the time. I have tinnitis type ringing. I also smell a weird chemical type smell off and on. Then that seems to spur horrible anxiety. My DR. wanted me to try amitryptaline endep. I took Sertraline once before and had a horrible reaction. I refuse to take antidepressants so I'm really stuck. I've had these symptoms ever since I was hospitalized out of the blue November of 2019 with heart attack like symptoms. I was in the hospital for five days and they never found anything wrong with me. During that time they used massive quantities of nitro-glycerin on me. One of the potential side effects of nitro is damage to central nervous system. I'm thinking maybe that's the problem. But I can't get any Dr. to consider anything other than the anxiety. I think the anxiety is an effect, not a cause. If my nervous system is messed up, why won't it heal? Anyway just thinking out loud and hoping maybe someone watching your vids has had similar issues. I'm going to try Magnesium Glycinate, which is the only treatment i've read about online to treat nervous system issues. If anyone has any incite, please chime in.

So far not a lot of improvement for my pain (fibromyalgia) but god this hunger is the worst I just have to eat, I'm not craving anything its just an overwhelming hunger and I can't stick to my diet that was helping me lose weight.
