I'm 66 years old and have been a music lover from my Beach Boy days, still like a lot of what's on the market. I never knew what you taught today, so Big thanks. I'm retired and have a Sony receiver 7.1 rated at 125 watts per channel powering 5 speakers on surround sound, but I use only the 2 front Polk's on music setting. I sit 8 feet away. Speaker are rated at 89 sensitivity, so thanks to you I now understand I'm good for what I need in an apartment. ( Polk 10" subwoofer needs to be kept down till neighbors leave. LOL

I really appreciate this video it helps me understand why the sound field on different surround settings can seem really good or total junk . i am not a pro so this bit of knowledge really opens my eyes personally on how to better calibrate the output of my receiver instead of just cranking up the volume and making my receiver get hot because i lack understanding of what i expect my speakers to do thank you very much.

This is where Cerwin Vega speakers excel. They have amazing sensitivity ratings. I have several vintage sets. Can't beat the way they look IMO. And if your too heavy on the volume knob, they are fused. Win win

Hi sir I got most part of your vdo, but I have one serious doubt and its bothering me a lot,so you mentioned a low sensitivity speaker will have around 88db@1w@1mtr,
91db@2w,
94db@4w,
97db@8w,
100db@16w,
So the same speaker Will have 6ohm,10watt on the backside,does that mean it will produce 97-100db(lies between 8w-16w from the above chart) at 10watt at 1mtr distance.

Hi! Thanks for watching! It can be VERY confusing but at least they give us stats that we can use like speaker sensitivity. That's really the only way we will know how loud the speakers can get and how much power we need to send to them.

The biggest problem with this is sensitivity rating seem wildly inaccurate from a lot of speaker companies. Good thing you CZcams guys are here to give the real ratings. Thanks for the video

Hi Techno Dad, thank you very much for the video! I saw your other video about the benefits of adding an external amp. If you have high efficiency speakers, like the Klipsh in your video, and are getting 105 dB with 16 watts at your listening position, do you still need an external amp for your receiver? It seems that any midrange AVR should be able to do the job, although the power would be less than the RMS power spec for those Klipshs. I have a 5.1.2 set up with Klipsh reference speakers and a Yamaha Rx-A770, and thinking about upgrading to denon 3700h with an external amp. Any feedback would be appreaciated!!

Excellent video, I never knew the sensitivity rating but I quickly started looking at them...Elac vs Martin Logan where it’s 85/86 vs 92. Still it seems for small rooms/dens you probably can cut a few corners and be fine with a set of Elac B6.2 as an example.

I have a pair of klipsch r-15M and a central r-52c connected to my onkyo tx nr575 but I feel that it lacks power, according to onkyo specs it has 80 w per channel to 8 ohms but the specifications of the klipsch are higher. So I need an amp with more power per channel? 100w at least?

I was initially looking for some polk audio rti a7 or a9. But this helped me so much to understand that they are quite powerhungry speakers. I think I roll with Klipsch :) any thoughts about Polk speakers?
Just bought few days ago my klipsch bookshelf speakers. They sound amazing 😍 especially around and above 70-75 db's, they really come alive. Since I don't have the space right now, I'm using these just for stereo setup right now . Once I move in to my next apartment, I'll be using these as my rear surround.

Hi Chana, I am from australia and I have been watching your home theatre series and I really like it. I purchased klipsch RP 6000F along with Denon AVC-X3700H for my new soon to be ready house. I am planning for 5.2.4 My room size is about 5mts height 3.4 mts width and 2.7 height. My preferred seating is at 3.5mts. 105dB THX reference level is way too high for me. I would only need 75dB at my seating position. I have few questions. As per your video do you think I would need an external amplifier? As per my calculations each speaker will need less than one watt. Is that correct? So, doI need to do the same calculations for the surround speakers as well?

Very nice info thanks, i just returned my Klipsch 820Fs. I replaced them with KEF Q750, these are paired with Def Techs. Rears are BPX, Sides are BP7006s. Center is CLR 3000, and towers are now KEF Q750 towers. All powered by Denon 2600H receiver. Very happy now, would you recommend a second amp to power the towers separate? I have two extra amps not being used

Wow!!....thank you so much!....I've never known this!...nobody has ever explained it this way as I now understand! This is awesome info especially given the wattage of the receivers I'm looking at! In the past I would just look for the biggest wattage rating of any particular speaker I was buying...I know understand why it's very important to know the sensitivity.

All hail klipsch RP sensitivity ratings. Rp6000f&500SA's coming later today. Then 2 pb 2000s later in the week. I've been on stereo bookshelves for a few weeks now while I wheel and deal to get a more appropriate setup. My first setup was whatever I could afford. This is round 2. I got some great deals over black Friday (rp500c for 289) man going from the reference aluminum tweeters to these titanium ones...theres such an unbelievable difference. I actually had the rp500c on for a few days with some older reference bookshelves, and it blew everything else away. It was like my center channel was operating on another level of clarity, and once you hear it, you need it.

bi-wire is pointless(same amp), bi-amp for this u need 2 amplifiers ,u can custom your sound how u like !
Hi bro, I'm first time building a speaker on my own. I have 100w 2.0 Apm that will power 50w/channel. for 3 way crossover i chosen:
woofer - 40w
mids - 15w
tweeter - 15w
all are 8ohms (i have option to go for 4ohms)
What do you think, in total 60w for speakers is too much or how should i choose mids and tweeter power?
This is so interesting. Im about to get the klipsch 8000f. And i sit about 12 feet away from screen. At a really loud point ive measured 85db listening level creeping to 90db. Im running a yamaha rx660 which measures 80w 8 ohms 20/20 2 channel Driven. Except of course im running it at 5.1 so i have no idea the 5.1 power output. Going back the klipsch am i correct in assuming all i need is 2 to 4 watts to run the klipsch st 85db max?

Awesome video ... for this reason, I just bought a 2019 Marantz AVR with rated 50 watt (page 10 of manual says 70 x 7 channels and does not mention ohms). Anyway, I found that indeed, 50 or 70 watts was plenty of power to hit the same volume as I had with my 90 watt/ch Yamaha. My speakers are 90db sensitivity in-walls. Let me see if I can understand this a little more: in your case, you get 99db @ 1 meter and lose about 3db per meter beyond that for the same wattage at the couch. I wonder what wattage it was to get those numbers? Was it 1 watt @ 1 meter, 2 watts @ 2 meters, and approximately 4 watts at the couch? I'm thinking you would have to double the wattage for every meter you are beyond the speaker ... 3 meters away so double wattage twice. I am thinking in terms of how much wattage needs to be applied - and sound intensity is what I'm after. By this then, if you double the distance (1 meter to 2 meters) then you cut the sound intensity to 93db at the microphone and at 3 meters it should about 89db at the couch with the same applied wattage of 1. To get from 89db up to 92db at the couch you would need to double the power to 2 watts, up to 95db would be 4 watts, 98db would be 16 watts, and 101db at the couch would be 256 watts. 101db to 105db sounds about right - I really like the empirical measurements you took with the meter. In real life, a quality 50 watt or 70 watt is plenty of power - the more would give more headroom, but my rule is in lower watts, go with quality watts. Thanks for the vid!
Very informative. I live in an apartment and obviously my Klipsch 7.2 setup is near my ideal sitting position, so no trouble reaching enough power from my 80 watts per channel Denon AVX receiver. However, what is your opinion in investing in an amplifier in terms of possibly gaining fidelity? Hope your Dog had ear plugs too :)

(for home application) if we use an active subwoofer will it still draw power from the amplifier and still have to formulated first or just plug it in into a pairs of the socket (back L & R maybe) since it already have it own power source??
Hi! So you plug the sub to the subwoofer pre-out on the back of the AVR, you aren't powering the sub from the AVR, it's just sending a signal through an RCA cable. The sub needs to be plugged into power. I explain all that in this video: czcams.com/video/AkHYDvvX29A/video.html

Originally looking at Yamaha rxa670/770 for $260/330. 80/95 watts at 8ohm at 2 channels Medium sized room. A little less than ten feet away. In your opionion, or should I step it upto a pre amp out set up like a marantz.$650 with 100 watt at 2 channels 8 ohm.. both are 7.2 capable but I'm only interested in 5.2 max

Techno Dad i need your help i recently purchased a Onkyo 686 receiver and a pair of klipsch r-820f speakers and a klipsch r120 sub. I also have a JBL center i was listening to the best of Sade on vinyl with all channels running and the volume was a -3 or -5 and the vinyl was playing loud and clear till she hit a high note and it got distorted on the tweeter. i was wondering if it could be the Receiver it is only an entry level speaker that i keep finding different power rating on one site says 165 W/Ch (6 Ω, 1 kHz, 1% THD, 1 Channel Driven, IEC) another site says 100 Watt - 8 Ohm - 20 - 20000 kHz - THD 0.08% - 2 channels. the klipsd speaker says 150 watts rms 600 peak with a 97 db sensitivity. My question is could it be the receiver not sending enough power to my speakers causing distortion?

Well, my denon avr-x2500h says it has 95watts per channel driving 2 channels but doesnt state how much it has per channel if i have it in multi channel stereo driving all 7.1 channels

Hey that was a good video got a question to ask you if you be able to help us out. Our Pioneer av receiver has stopped working so have decided to buy a yamaha receiver around $800. Now our local store has recommended that we buy new speakers, our old speakers are 15 years old. But to me they Still Sound perfect they were quite expensive back then, around the $1700. Do I need to get new speakers or they just trying to get extra coin out of us. Running 2 towers, 2 book shelf, center and power sub 5.1. Thanks

Very instructive video however the THX value is all over the place. Let us say we have a 5 channel system with speakers of 87 db sensitivity. and placed 1m around the listener. This means that at THX continuous we need less than 5 watts to power the entire system, right? And in the case of THX peak value we need an amplifier/av receiver with 320 W of total power. And if the speakers are placed at 3m around the listener the values move to 20w continuous and ~1300 watts for THX peark value? Am I missing something?

How many electrical circuits did you use for your theater room? I'm in the middle of constructing theater room and trying to figure out how many circuits I need. The room will have 11.4.2 denon. Projector 6 power seats. I'm planning on 2 circuits using 12 guage wire on 20 amp breakers. Will this be enough?

Great content thank you, I would just like to understand Something which confuses me abit, I know what you mean about the efficiency of the speaker, but some people say if you driving say the klipcsh RP600m which is 100 RMS book shelf speakers, they've recommended a 50whatt or 75whatt system, should 100RMS output amp not be the best option???? Hence that's what it can take.
Or the Klipsch RP-8000F being a 150w rms speaker. If only being able to get say a 120w per channel amp possibly put strain on the amp, or what's best rated. More rms output from reciver than what the speaker can take or other way around for being safe??? Is there a rule of thumb for pairing up RMS speaker sizes to RMS rated output of receivers?????
