In this video, rather than talk exclusively about the competitive Esports scene in league of legends, we're looking into champion history. More specifically, Akali, the first true assassin ever put into the game. Riot Games and their staff have made a lot of great champions over the years, but few have been as OP, broken, and montage worthy than Akali. From pre rework to post rework. From Westrice and the dominance he showed with her in 2011 and Season 1 lol esports, to the reworked Akali and CertainlyT with his crazy vision for her kit. Akali is one of the most interesting champions in all of league of legends history.

i dion't think there has ever been a time where 'nobody played her' I remember my buddy 'maining' her literally immediately after his first day playing her, then played her nonstop for 6 years...and I hated it...cuz we ALWAYS had to dodge cuz he got banned out or someone else picked.

@@FreddeLibre it was a huge IP sink for just 1 champ. You needed a dedicated rune page and the runes to go along with it. Regardless, it was super satisfying once you got it.

I don't agree. Creating an overloaded champion is the easy way to make it popular. People will play it because it's free LP, not because it's well designed.
@@andressacco1002 akali still have high playrate even when she is the worst champ in the game similar to darius and yas. Hate him or not the champ he make even at their worst is fun for the one who play them.

Watching old Akali content makes me wish there was a Season 3 Legacy Server option for League.

It was the exact same thing when it came to getting the most optimal runes set, you would look up what pros or guides suggested, the only difference being you had to grind for IP to build your rune pages. A competitive ready rune page would cost up to 20k, plus having to have separate pages. Also if you don’t want to look up runes in u.gg you don’t have to. Today’s system is MUCH better.
@@JomaSnow Sure its better. But as far as making the game fun and your own. Its not by far. Do you know how fun it was to play nasus with full armor/CDR and Gold runes? Or playing LB with Deathfire grasp? I miss those days because those were when league was FUN. Not better. FUN.
Sure, I dont have to play the game like everyone else today. But also theres a reason metas exist. In Season 3, the system allowed you to make the game FUN for you AND allowed you to win the game.
Also prices of IP vs. Blue essence doesnt matter. At least with IP you get a consistent amount after every game compared to BE where you have to farm tokens, convert those tokens into Mystery Champ tokens. then convert those into BE.
The game as a whole is BETTER. But its not FUN. Period.
As an OG Akali main I gotta say this video was super well made and brought back some memories. I really miss old Akali and the old league community in general. Those were good times. Back when Lonesomeranger scammed everyone in the AkaIi club, league didn't have unbalanceable champions getting released every week, Yuumi didn't exist, and the CZcams league community didn't consist of stream highlights.

still don't really get how they made a champ with a defense buff that works best against multiple instances of damage and an ultimate that was just a giant taunt field ... and decided that it was an _anti-mage_
i mean, granted, his kit was 1/5th anti-mage by promoting mr stacking, 1/5th an ultimate that was _vaguely_ anti-mage if you think of it from the perspective of their autos dealing negative damage, 1/5th an ability that literally made mage autos heal him ... and 2/5ths extremely mediocre mage. i suppose there is a world where the rework kept the team engage aspect of his e, and his passive and q were swapped with something that played into the defensive support tank concept that was kinda-sorta there ( and perhaps also actually played into the fact that the dude's this big hulking gargoyle, instead of just slapping four ranged abilities on a dude with a wet noodle of a melee attack and calling it a day ) ... but man
if there was a kit in league that screamed "filler hero from pre-icefrog dota" more, then it's escaping my memory

Didn't classic version of akali get countered with a single pink ward though? I thought that's why she wasn't used much in pro play before rework?

I played Akali pre-Rework in the jungle and got multiple Pentas in a really short amount of time. That was really fun to play. I stopped playing her after the rework, but started playing her again recently.

seeing old footage like this makes me realize how much i miss pre worlds s1 league. when people played weird stuff, rarely used flash and there werent 100+ champions to choose from.
it felt more fun to play than todays version of the game.
My first main. Also the second champion I ever wanted, first one being the champion who just released when I started to play this game, Ahri.
I was never that good with her but I did have a lot of fun playing her, more often than not to the detriment of my teammates.
The very first skin i bought from the starter 400rp back in season 4 was blood moon akali. Here's to my first and last OTP. The champion that got me to diamond right before her rework. Cheers, Akali ❤

I remember back then there was a weird tank build for old Akali back when her E proc'ed her Q mark because she just dealt so much damage that even when u build her as a tank (Sunfire Cape, Frozen Gauntlet, etc.), she can still deal the most damage in a match : ^) fun times tho, esp. from a jungle main

@@FrostfyreAkali Most Ap bruiser/assasin like champions have no diversity sadly. Riftmaker is just a bad item compared to the ad sustaining items. Gwen for example is being build with divine sunderer cause it does everything better than a Riftmaker would do. And all the other mythic items which give mana are trash on Akali aswell. Imo the release of mythic items was an indirect nerf to Akali and alot of other champions too

Just wanted to note at 14:19 her win rate did shift a lot and actually rise to decent levels, obviously theres a lag between players learning to play the character and opponents learning to versus them. The spike in win rates tend to be right before or after of the pick rate spiking, though the pick rate never reach anywhere close to how it was before. I think there's a very correlation that may not be causation but rather an effect by the transitional period due to how learning works and games work specifically league. New tricks are explored and if not multiple then at least one or two ways of playing the champ are found to be competitive and fleshed out enough to see if it could be. On top of this, players, who joined in the initial wave during the boom of a big change, but stayed stayed showed an overall higher average pick rate getting close to almost always be half of what it used to be before. Still I think your point in the video is both correct and a nice succinct way to describe the situation of Akali's changes and development. I think there were a lot of moments where Akali somewhat stabilize before a big moment of dropping off again, whether due to players finding the weakness of the new put together Akali or overall satisfaction of the players of both sides of the situation. I'm sure I remember feeling a weird see saw effect of Akali feeling oppressive and fun to play as, Oppressive but boring to play, weak but fun to play and weak and just horrible to play,; not including all the grey areas between all of that. The big moment specifically is the first kit rework at the end of 2016 and the start of 2017 and again it deeps as well, was some tragic times as an Akali man back then, but still love the champion all the same. Can't get a feel for the new one still, but anyways thank you very much for you video and ALL of the work over the years, been amazing

the funny thing with how her r2 execute used to work is that you could never get the max damage (unless i am remembering wrong) because in order to get the 200% damage, they need to be a 0% hp.........

Been playing the game since S2 and following NALCS since the beginning. Love your videos as always! Always gives me nostalgic feelings! I was a big Voyboy fan so I still remember Voy pullling out the old Akali back in the day with Curse.

I can never hate the Akali rework, simply becuase she now has the coolest splash art in the game.
very much with you friend, gameplay-wise she's the second assassin who's my favorite to play as (with Ekko being the first), and design-wise she's become top 5 characters in league for me just from the splash art alone (the other four in order from 1st to 4th are Karma, Leblanc, Morgana, and Zyra)

I used to play with a laptop at 15-20 fps, one of my first champs, hours of fun, my first pentakill, I loved the sound effects from Q+AA, I loved everything about this champ, 2017 assasins rework put her in a good spot where it could carry games, tank akali max E was fun too, but one day Riot just decided to take her from me, and since that day I barely had fun in this game, now that I have a decent computer I would like to play her at least one more time, I wish Riot allow me to play at least one more time, my old Akali :(

His champs have always been balancing nightmares and are universally hated by the majority of the player base for good reason. The game wouldve been in a much healthier state without certainlyt and a good chunk of the community agrees
@@Tokumastu1 Yeah, without him, the game would be full of mundos and other statcheck shit. Trust me, even though they are balancing nightmares, they add a better taste for the. Champions that get countered by ACTIVE THINKING, thats why the majority of the league community fucking sucks. Trust me, all his champions gets countered by realizing patterns and their mechanics e.g. darius -> prevent 5 stacks
graves: fight him on flatland instead of near terrain
Yasuo and kalista -> don´t fight, with your own minions
Zoe => Stay behind minions, don´t wander in jungle
Akali = Bait out W and dodge E, have patience in General.
Aphelios = Stun, Magic damage, if crescendum play on distance if calibrum, play on meele, Infernum just don´t group like a bronze.
If Qiyana or Viego would be made by him, he would get the hate. Fuck this entire league community. I also quit, after his Artwork (Mordekaiser) turned into AP Darius with Sauron skin.
All his champions are fun to play, thats what the playrates say. And all of his champions gets countered by active thinking, not just building heal reduction or qss. NO thats brainless. You gotta realize patterns ffs.
The game would've been fine. They already had experimental champs in the game long before certainlyT came in to mess things up. Less we forget that Zed and lee sin were already there. The only counterplay to certainly's champs is to hope the other player screws up, whitch is a terrible design decision. Again the community is right to be pissed at him and the balancing nightmares are not worth it especially how not only do they ruin the fun, but also has played a major role in the accelerated power creep.
@@Tokumastu1 Zed, Gp, Lee Sin also have obvious counterplay and you could say to them exactly the same thing "hope the other player screws up". Trust me, if CertainlyT designed Irelia or GP, these champions would be hated as well.
And for example vs. Kalista, its really obvious counterplay. But if you see Master yi, he is literally dependant on 1 thing enemy Teamcomp. If your enemy does not have reliable CC, the entire team is screwed. Opposed to yasuo, yasuo is easier to punish for terrible decisions .. Master yi on the other hand is just scaling up to 1 or 2 itmes . He also has tools to get the kills much easier. He has untargettability, point and click followup, high attackspeed steroid and 70% dmg reduction... This is what I call unhealthy. Way unhealthier than kalista, since she relies on her support and enemy minions

I started to play akali before the gave her abilities shiny new icons. I got into her because of one video that I am pretty sure doesn't exist anymore on CZcams. It was from Keyori and while it wasn't HIM playing Akali, it was Westrice. I watched him do an akali combo where he cooked a Q, on a lux, then he ult>auto>q>e>Auto and she was gone. I think he fit old gunblade in there too. He then jumped on someone behind lux who was 3 levels down or something and one shot them.
I was in love.
Then I watched SivHD, Old professor akali when he actually played akali and talked about milk a lot. And I copied from them. It was fun messing around in norms and in bronze and low silver with my friends and them getting freaked out about how everyone on the enemy team was dying. I even made a friend and we talked about kites a lot.
I miss that akali.
The new one took me a long time to get the hang of. It wasn't until they took away the obscure and the heal that I got into playing her. I didn't like how the heal felt, and I couldn't play her because, haha! Obscure go BAN.

Ah my first champ I ever got a Penta with back when I started in 2013.
I started playing in s3 back then I hated Akali but it felt like there was something I could do about it. Her abilities were targeted, you could see her marks, and pink ward = win.
Post rework it just removed all counter play. She has sustain, damage, range, mobility, stealth, the only mechanic she didn’t have was invulnerability, but she built into hourglass.
This game has fallen so far from what it used to be. Champs don’t even have archetypes anymore. Everyone can do everything.
Love playing akali. Only disappointed this video didn’t get the credit it deserved

I really liked Akali post rework but I do wish I didn't have to relearn some aspect of her every few months. Regardless of Riot's balancing decisions though, I do very much like this style of video Gbay.

Remember that time when I was too good with Akali. Every game I play her - Always got S and S+. With me Akali = and only = Domination.
Man can you understand it when oneday I got A in a game with her, and then few times more I played Akalli and still got no S anymore... I was so scare because she's the first and nothing else feel like her.
I just too scare that I ended up not brave enough to pick her again... time just fly I've play almost all champs and still don't pick that champion until the day I heard they rework Akali. The rework are very great but that time when something's gone I just relize: There will not be any champ that so special with me like that old akali - I miss her... Until the last minutes I've never thought I will pick her just one. more. time
There's no rework make me sad like this. The champ that I miss much.
I miss the stacked ult so much. I honestly would play her a lot more if everything but the ult was reverted back to it's original.
Akali Rework was undercooked. It needed more time in development to work out clearly unhealthy mechanics (Smokebomb, ulti stun, Q heal). A lot of modern champs now see similar problems. Either the champ has too much in their kits or the champion mechanics bug out the game because ability and champion interactions aren't core to the rules of the game.
As an old Akali main, I was really disappointed with her rework. Between her visuals, VO and skill changes, there was absolutely nothing left of the character I loved :(
At least her splash art and design is nice :D. I think she looks nicer. Can't say much about her skills though as I wasn't around for og akali nor do I really play her now for that matter.

What I was missing was the phase where everyone played tank akali and it was really strong in solo q, but scaled poorly and never saw pro play from what I remember. It was a really annoying mid-game build that got nerfed quickly.
