How To Replace a Battery | RAM 1500 | 2009 to 2018 - Is This the Right Solution?

  • Watch as #MundaneMan replaces the original battery on his 2012 #RAM 1500 with the 5.7 liter Hemi. This process is the same for 2009 to 2018 RAM 1500's and is general guide for most vehicles where the battery is in the engine compartment. It is a relatively easy DIY job that most people can do themselves. I meter the new battery to see if the alternator is charging and I test the old battery to determine if it has any life in it.
    The battery was 7 years old and I assume it has reached the end of its life so it is time to put in a new Kirkland unit from Costco.

    Changed my battery today in my 2017 Ram 1500. Pretty easy job. I've heard of some people having problems after they install a new battery such as things not working right, backup camera, radio, etc. I didn't have that problem. Only thing I noticed which was peculiar was when I was about 40 minutes into driving the truck after the battery was installed, the fan on the air-conditioner suddenly increased to it's maximum speed while I had it on low. It turned it back down and no problems. Probably the computer going through it's checks or whatever. With these new vehicles, you have to let the computer go through the process of rebooting and I guess thinks could go crazy for a day or two.

    Thanks - I've done this countless times with many different vehicles but wanted to see how the battery retention clamps work on the truck before beginning. Sometimes they are almost inaccessible on some older vehicles. Glad its just one 10 mm bolt on the accessible side>. Clear video, so no surprises in store.

    Nice video, thx, the original battery in my 2010 ram just died and your video was a great review. I've never had a battery last that long. Fortunately, it passed at home and not on the road. One issue was a corroded negative terminal that needed replaced. Unfortunately, the nut holding the terminal to the wiring harness had to be cut off to release the harness, difficult job in a tight space. Don't forget your dielectric grease.

    Thank you, very helpful! I might have to replace my truck's battery for the first time and this is very helpful. It's been sitting for a few days in the cold and won't start, clicks a few times and the lights/radio turn on but the engine won't. Might be the starter or the battery, and the check engine light is on. I'll find out soon - if it's the battery, and I need to change it, this is very helpful!!

    Thanks mate. Looks pretty easy. My 2016 has a different thermal shroud, but I'm hoping it has a quick release velcro like you 2012. I'm mostly hoping the tray bracket down the back is as shown in your video. Sometimes they really put them in a spot that you cut your hands to pieces trying to get it off without the special tool they have in the mechanic's bay. I'll be changing this battery, depending on what the AAA guy finds with his test in a few minutes.

    Nice video. Watched a pro do it in a shop on a 2018 Ram and they connected a 12v source to the vehicle computer port under the inside dash before removing the battery. After replacing the battery they did not need to reset the vehicle computer as it retained its memory and settings during the battery replacement. They sell the 12v source gadget on the web although it may seem like an unnecessary expense using it only when replacing a battery. On Rams with a 7 way trailer plug the 12v wire is NOT switched (always hot and fused) so one perhaps might be able to attach a 12v source to that connector to keep the vehicle computer always powered during battery replacement.

    Replaced my Ram 14 battery today. Forgot to put the cover on and had to remove the cables twice. Napa sold me one with a baggy stuck to the side which contained a vent plug kit which is why I'm here checking to see if I missed something. And, I am not. Thanks

    • @mundaneman254
      @mundaneman254  Před 2 lety +1

      I used the battery chart at Costco and the battery fit perfectly in width, depth and height so I think it is the right one. It had a bit higher cold crank amps than the previous battery which was the only difference I could see.

    Can you unhook the battery on these trucks without having to relearn the key and othe stuff that will make it un drivable?

    • @mundaneman254
      @mundaneman254  Před rokem

      In my replacement I did not appear to lose any of the ECM parameters. The truck ran as it did before. I think the only thing I had to reset was the clock. Even the pre-programmed channels on the stereo remained intact. The key worked fine too. No reprogramming of anything required. I am wondering if a vehicle sat for several days or months with a dead battery if some of the programming would be lost. I don't know for sure.

      @GLCUSTOMS Před rokem

      @@mundaneman254 thanks for the reply. I'm looking to I'm looking to do a sorta hard reset on my truck so I want to unhook the battery for about 20 to 25 minutes then hook it back up so I'm worried that might be long enough to mess something up.

    • @ryeweskey
      @ryeweskey Před rokem

      @@GLCUSTOMS how did that work for you. I've heard disconnecting the negative terminal for a period of time is good for resetting the ecu, possibly even some other system that makes the transmission relearn.. I wouldn't want my keys to suddenly stop working however.

    • @GLCUSTOMS
      @GLCUSTOMS Před rokem +1
