Doctors, patients: Efforts to block opioid addiction are also blocking treatment

  • Just walking up to a pharmacy window is enough to send Tina Kasten's brain into overdrive. Kasten, who lives in Manitowoc, takes Suboxone as part of her treatment for heroin addiction. She said she has experienced delays in filling her prescription a half-dozen times over the last year. via.fox6now.com/APloX

    • @ElizabethF2222

      Yes and what they are doing to some legit doctors who are just trying to give their patients relief is despicable. The DEA and the FDA are the criminals. They are punishing legitimate pain patients unnecessarily because a few bad apples have destroyed the whole bunch. Our drug laws are punitive, ancient and need to be revised.

      OMG So true! I'm in Houston and have had no problems filling my subs at HEB pharmacy. They never have run out in 16 years I have been on subs. Dr. says it's just a regular med for me, like insulin to a diabetic. I'll be on it for the rest of my life and she will prescribe them to me as well. Mom and pop pharmacies the way to go for sure if you don't have HEB, which I think are only in Texas. I feel for those in smaller towns for having to deal with this BS. Doctor prescribes, pharmacists fill. Not up to some idiot pharmacist who didn't go to medical school to intervene. Fill the damn RX and help your customers and people trying to get off heroin and other opiates. There have been deaths of people who OD'd and died because they couldn't get medication assisted treatment. That's a crying shame. Better to let a few guilty ones go who are selling it than letting even ONE person OD and die because they couldn't get their meds. It's disgusting. DEA and FDA to blame as well. Shame on them and those despicable pharmacists who think they are doctors.

      I've been on subs since 2005. I can say you are spot on. But I'm in Houston, a big city, and as long as I go to HEB Grocery pharmacies I'm fine. They have never run out since 2005. Never go to Walgreens, CVS, Kroger or Walmart. Those pharmacists think they are doctors. They are not. The limiting of patients sub doctors can treat is a crying shame too, but the regulations have relaxed a bit. Not a lot, but it is much easier these days. I only do video visits as well. So easy now.

    Keep in mind also, that for those who are in recovery from drug/substance abuse, it’s way better and attainable to remain drug/substance free if you have a positive mindset and an iron-clad support system. Taking medication alone is not enough to keep you on the “wagon”☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️ I learned this while I was in rehab. Just in that week alone that I was there away from my family, I learned so many coping skills, met others like myself, bonded with a lot of them. Met wonderful nurses, therapists, doctors, just a kind caring nonjudgmental staff! Whomever is in charge of training did a wonderful job! I never intended to become an addict but it happened and I can actually talk about it now without embarrassment, or guilt. I love all of my doctors involved with my care and well-being, mentally and physically, we all work together as a team and I’m not treated as just a “number” or an addict, but with respect and understanding! I’ve learned so much and while I wouldn’t wish addiction on my worst enemy, the experience has taught me a lot! Never will I ever judge another addict, not sayin that I use to but I’ve caught myself in the past shaking my head. Nowadays, if I happen to cross paths with one, I’ll look at them with the essence of knowing what they are going through and that I completely understand it. My whole entire outlook on life has changed the past two and half years.

      @@Oamiano I've long since weaned off the program and have been clean from everything for 12 years now. But back in the early 2000's that's the way it was. (At least here in Nova Scotia) The health care system wanted methadone to be an absolute last resort. There were many programs you had to complete (Some of them 3+ months long) which were one hour meetings everyday at the addiction services building , you also had to be seeing an addictions counselor everywhere with no missed appointments. I even went to a long term facility called The Talbot house located in Cape Breton NS for 6 months. And Even after all that..I still relapsed. I never felt so hopeless in my life. But it was only after all that , that I was accepted to get on the methadone program. Nowadays...yes you walk in and they put you on rite away. It's all a harm reduction thing now because so many people were dying waiting to get on the program.

      Yea they do get auditied alot the main ones that get auditied are places like cvs, rite aide if it was still around, walmart/sams, walgreens, and target all the big ones. If audited they have to show the percent of narcotics vs other medication they dispense, and if there narcotics are through the roof they can be sued\fined, or worse shut down. My lawyer i have has sued and fined many pharmacys for different thing two of the most are over prescribing and judging wheather or not they will fill them

Then I call the CVS pharmacy and when I get there my meds are waiting for me. Literally in and out in like 5 mins. You should try other places cause they're making you wait way too long that's unbelievable.

After i had nno pain meds i went back on the 16mg/day suboxone and when i took it i immediately noticed that i had severe pain in my mouth, i was diagnosed with Burning Mouth Syndrome, it's an incurable disease and the suboxone did nothing for the pain i needed a full agonist that i could afford w;/o insurance i called my dr office and asked to speak to him and i asked if we could switch to methadone and he said that's fine and i could get a script to for it i let after hanging up the phone i had to get the methadone i was in agony. i needed a full mu agonist with no ceiling, subs are partial mu agonists with a 32mg ceiling. Yes suboxone works well to keep withdrawls away, but for me i just have to have a full mu agonist opioid to take away this nerve damage plus methadone is an nmda antagonist, out of the 17urs of being on methadone/buprenorphine i started subutex for a year, then in methadone clinic from 2004 through spring 2008, then i got on suboxone for about 8 months maybe 9, and ive been on methadone ever since

      It does give a sense of wellbeing, the euphoria isn't nearly as superior as that of true opiates, but I used to buy it decades ago off a workmate.
      He said ''Try this'' and I did really like the effect, despite feeling a bit nauseous.
      So I used to buy it regularly, not knowing it was remotely ''addictive'' {Long before the internet was about}
      Anyway...I stopped taking it, and felt really bad, legs ached like mad, felt really emotional, and had no energy.
      NOW I know that was withdrawal symptoms, and quite mild ones, compared to subsequent methadone WD's.
      Methadone is meant to be the worst drug to WD from, hence why people are transferred to Subutex to make it ''easier'' {Hollow laugh}
      Methadone can also be really 'dangerous' in that doses accumulate over several days, and people have just gone to sleep and never woken up.
      It's up to you if you want to try it...I wish I'd not , all those decades ago!

I decided in 2019 to go through Withdrawal and get off everything. It was tough, but My pain Doc helped Me. I then went on Suboxone. And rapidly tapered down. But, I didn't have a plan for treating My Chronic pain. I found a Doc an hour and a half away to help Me. I have Cancer and I have had many surgeries. But, no pain meds. So, My New Doc said that Suboxone would help My Chronic pain and he increased the dose when I had surgery. It helped but not like real pain meds do. But I will never go back to pain meds. I take 8mg Suboxone 3 x daily and it helps with My Chronic pain. I have My brain back and My body is slowly getting back to normal after 25 years of Opiates. I travel because, I can't find Doctor's who know enough about Suboxone. It's been a life saver. This video scares Me. I hope I don't run into problems in the future. So far I haven't had any issues with getting Suboxone. 🙏
