Fun fact: The Korean folklore equivalent of a succubus is a kumiho. The are transforming fox demons, but unlike the kitsune of Japan, kumiho are always depicted as malevolent demons of sex and bloodshed. I can see this folklore characterization in North Korea's depiction of foxes within their media.
That's an interesting fact, thank you.
ah, that explains one of the characters that they added for the show Lovecraft Country that wasn't in the book.
Very cool! I definitely read that as “Cummy-Hoe”.
Sex and bloodshed? Fitting
I mean, foxes are probably the animal with the most sex appeal in the furry community, so i guess they werent too far off.

Korea, Japan, and China all feature a fox trickster femme fatale in folklore (kumiho/kitsune/huli jing respectively), hence why there tends to be a lot of evil sexy fox ladies in Asian animation. Japan is the only one to also have benevolent portrayals of these fox tricksters.

It will never not be funny to me how Squirrel and Hedgehog portrays Americans as huge, buff wolf dudes whose main base of operations is a giant B-17 Flying Fortress shaped like a dragon!
Even in propaganda, NK can't help to admit that America is, as RussianBadger put it, "the final boss of planet Earth!"
Unlike what most people think, this is not a good thing that the entire world hates the US government unless specifically allied with them. Did you know that 20% of all North Korean citizens died in the Korean war? This includes children, infants, 100% of all civilian infrastructure, etc.

Anthropomorphism is incredibly helpful in storytelling. Just look at Disney's Robin Hood. Robin Hood is a fox because foxes are associated with cleverness and tricks, the king is a lion because lions are the kings of beasts, the nurse is a hen because she's a mother hen, ect. Its universal

Unironically probably the cleanest transition into an ad I have ever seen and I can't even be slightly upset. Well done Saber.
A few historical items of note. You're right that North Korea was flourishing after the war. They were outstripping the South despite heaps of foreign aid being pumped into it. Its current economic state is due largely to the collapse of the Soviet Union and many other other Eastern countries during that time, depriving North Korea of many of its trade partners that it was reliant on. This is exacerbated by Western sanctions that even America fully admits exist to make living conditions so bad that it will drive suffering civilians to rebel. To me, that sounds like a pretty inhumane policy.
I also think the affect of the war on the country was understated. What the United States did was nothing short of a genocide. Not only were there many massacres committed such as at No Gun Ri, but the bombing campaign indiscriminately targeted civilian structures as well. Millions were killed both by the bombs and the starvation, thirst and disease caused by the destruction of infrastructure. Beyond that, the South committed some horrific atrocities against anyone who was even suspected of having Communist sympathies (It's definitely worth looking up the Bodo League.)
To be honest, while these cartoons certainly are propaganda, we need to realize that much of the news we get about North Korea comes from very unreliable sources like Radio Free Asia (Literally a state department propaganda outlet) and half of them are completely unsourced or vetted. So there is a certain irony to be looking at North Korean propaganda and acting like it's so infantile while we, ourselves are inundated with just as much propaganda about North Korea that attempts to manufacture our consent for hawkish foreign policy against them. And with regards to nuclear weapons... Sadly, that's kind of a necessity for them to retain their independence. Look at Western intervention across the globe. We invade and force regime change on countries completely arbitrarily and when those tactics aren't available? We fund and arm far right rebels in the country to enact a violent coup. Do you think there would be a self-determined North Korea still instead of a puppet state if they didn't have an appreciable military?
THIS SHOULD BE THE PINNED COMMENT!! You really need more likes! You are the first person with a brain here, oh my god. North Korean civilians have a normal life. They have smartphones and water parks and live semi-normal lives despite their hardships. Unlike what Reddit says, the government does not need to pay over 1 million actors; it's just a nation with people like you and me.
But but what about the citizens(euphemism for inmates) having to pull the passenger trains across the tracks? Or the rats eating children who are then served to the people?? Or every grocery store being fake and just filled with plastic food?! Aren't these 100% true and credible facts about North Korea????
I'm shook.

There's an amazing graphic novel called _"Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea"_ by french-canadian cartoonist and animator _Guy Delisle_ who got sent to a north korean animation studio (I think it even had been the very same SEK studio mentioned here, but I'm not perfectly sure) for quality control and overlooking the outsourced production by a french studio. He spent several month in Pyongyang where he experienced a plethora of north korean percularities and absurdities and turned it into a graphic novel traveller's report of sorts - he shows the professional aspect and how he experienced work with a north korean animation studio as well as his everyday life off work compared to how north koreans live their lives.
It's extremly interesting and insightful, and it's anything but dry thanks to the author's/artist's great humor.
I can definitly recommend it, and as niche as it is with its focus on north korean animation through the eyes of a western animation expert as perfectly does it fit to Saberspark's video here.

The Punch in the Face reminds me of the first time I was watching live action Korean TV. And that had a similar weird thing going on. It was some soap opera/drama sort of thing I couldn't entirely follow. Eventually two guys get into a fist fight and it's like... Elementary School Theater level bad. They're clearly missing each other by feet with their swings and not even really pretending to sell the "hits" in any good way.
Then a woman runs into the scene and they just deck her. Like there's impact and you can hear the impact and she goes down without any hesitation.
Definitely was shocking and memorable to watch, particularly because of the set up with the badly staged fight that was in no way believable and then they're like "Woman! We can actually punch her!" as she came on the scene.
I do believe the reason the "bad" animals are specifically weasels and rats is because those are major pest animals in North Korea. At one point the North Koreans thought of sparrows as pest animals too and even ran a campaign to hunt them to extinction in their country, which sorta worked in massively reducing their numbers, *BUT* basically let locusts and other actual pest insects run rampant across their tiny chunk of country, which is something they're *still* trying to recover from even now.

Regarding _why_ they chose squirrels as sort of a symbol, I don't know if this is intended but squirrels, despite their harmless front, are actually quite brutal in nature. They're omnivorous, a lesser known fact, and will hunt smaller - more defenseless - animals like juvenile birds. They can even cannibalize eachother!
This is to say that it could have a double-sided meaning of sorts, they seem small in defenseless and, being lower on the foodchain, do have to be more vigilant of their surroundings in order to not fall prey to a more robust animal, though their strength (or seemingly lack thereof) should not be taken at face value.

Korean folklores in general has a lot of anthromorphic characters and we have described animals with spiritual meanings in our literatures and poems for centuries. So anthromorphism in Korean literatures is very common thing.
Following that, NK promoting their own traditions and Juche politics, these anthromorphic characters are very much in line with their objectives in propaganda animations. Squirrels and rabbits being shown as innocent and hopeful, tigers being a strong protector of their culture and tradition and foxes being malicious and brutal infiltrators. This representation of animal characters are very familiar for kids reading folklores and easier for them to understand and absorb the content of the propaganda.
I always like to hear about other cultures' folklore, thanks for sharing this
Interesting that foxes always seem to be tricksters. Many European countries told stories of ‘Reynard’ the fox, who tricks other animals to get his way, tries to avoid getting punished for his pranks or plots how to humiliate the other animals when they do wrong to him.
I have no problem with antro animals BUT WITH FURRIES
Oh wow. That’s fascinating. Other cultures’ folklore is fascinating. That k you for sharing.
@Jimmyismine furries are LITERALLY that
the fact that North Korea even has roads for CARS when people cant even own cars.
It’s things like this that absolutely blow my mind that North and South Korea are on the same peninsula.
Interesting thing: squirrel in the "Squirrel and Hedgehog" might be a slight mistranslation. North koreans have a single word for both squirrel and chipmunk and since main characters clearly have fur patterns on their faces and tails, it is highly likely they are in fact chipmunks.
I'm from Russia and we don't have an official dub of "Squirrel and Hedgehog", but we have a fandub called "Бурундук и ёжик" (Chipmunk and Hedgehog). It might be because russian word "белка" (squirrel) is female gendered, so male gendered "chipmunk" was chosen instead, but I still like to believe our translators have done a better job with original korean title :-)
Makes sense, here in Brazil we too have a single word for them: ''Esquilo'', we don't have the word ''chipmunk'' here, so our translation for Alvin and the Chipmunks for exemple is Alvin and the Squirrels (Alvin e os Esquilos), only here the word in male gendered.
To be fair, chipmunk is just ground dwelling squirrel that doesn't have any distinction from other squirrels other than iconic striped back (many other squirrel too live in the ground surfaces and have extendable cheeks for holds food). So thats translation doesn't change anything

Between Unit 731, Nanjing, Korea, and so much more, the Japanese army might be the most depraved participant in WW2.
You can understand why the global community is very iffy on the prospect of Japanese Rearmament that's been thrown around lately.
@@warbossgegguz679 I'd argue that would have been a problem if the old guard of post-war Japanese nationalism still held sway like they did back in the 2000s, but the fact is they don't. I'm talking about the conservatives who wanted Japanese atrocities written out of school history books and visited cemeteries where war criminals are interred. And they nearly succeeded in making younger generations forget their troubling national legacy (I've heard tell of young Japanese tourists using the Pearl Harbour memorial for selfies, but I could neither confirm nor deny this claim based on my own research).
It may be too early to tell if the incumbent powers in Japan are going to be better or worse compared to those that came before. Hell, they may mirror Israel's slippery slope into authoritarianism, only without the convenience of a scapegoat to blame all their woes on like Israel does with Palestine. But I feel confident in stating one thing: with tensions rising over Taiwan and the various societal crises in southeast Asia, Japanese rearmament is almost inevitable, as Japan is already going through a population crisis. Let's just hope that Abe's brand of nationalism lost its bite after his assassination, and it won't be prominent enough to take hold in Japan and repeat history
@@ShaunOfTheN00bs Oh no I agree. I think it's been unfairly long since they had greater independence. I'm just mentioning that the past is rather unflattering.
@@warbossgegguz679 for sure, but I think as long as Japan adopts the same mentality that Germany does when it comes to their relationship with the country's checkered past, then the world shouldn't worry too much about a resurgent Japan.
If anything, the new generations may do this themselves indirectly. This is because a rising percentage of Japanese school children are being taught in free schools where their learning is self-directed, so they're more likely to encounter outside writings of what Japan did during WW2

The "nasty" north, sure. Look up Bodo Massacre and South Korean suicide and fertility rates
@@fsexplorer9727I think they meant that in a sarcastic way.
Also, every country has its own problems.
As someone who grew up on Soviet cartoons, the first four Squirrel and Hedgehog episodes seem very familiar in style; the smooth animation, use of rotoscoping, and just the "look" feels a lot like the animation from communist Russia (albeit from a few decades earlier).
That clip from Clerks The Animated Series surprised me a little.
Good job on making this video, Saberspark. Those cartoons you reviewed intend to pander to kids, manipulate them, and make them act just as insane as the characters!

Love the fact Saber gave us the sauce for the thumbnail too . U A LEGEND MAN
In all seriousness, this show (Squirrel & Hedgehog) being so well to North Korean kids, who are so impressionable, well, that is legitimately horrifying. I agree with Saberspark here; once you know the context of the show, it's VERY difficult to focus on anything BUT the context. And that shakes me more than most recent horror movies. 😬
Came for the fox waifu, left traumatized by the fact young children have to watch this
How is it horrifying. You are failing to understand that north Koreans live in a very different society, in its actual fundamental functioning. You can't apply western, capitalist standards to this. The children there are not so ignorant and impressionable as children from the USA
@@nukelewman "how is promoting child soldiers, killing all outsiders, and extreme violence to children horrifying?? Its just their society!"
@@laughableInflection I don't think this show promotes child soldiers at all. Keep in mind, it's still a fucking cartoon. And there really isn't much reason for us to engage because I doubt you have any sympathies for communism, right? You just see it as a savage, totalitarian ideology right?
@@nukelewman pretty sure thats what the characters in the last episode were. Its a cartoon full of things to try and sway the minds of the people who watch it, which tbh is common but still. Im not really a fan of cartoons or shows in general like that.

Do you know that in Italy we know very well the Studio SEK operas? They even made an anime-like show on a famous italian singer, Adriano Celentano. The tv serie is called "Adrian: la serie evento", and it talks about this alter-ego of Adriano Celentano being a watchmaker in a despotic future. There is a building in Naples called Mafia International. And Adrian is like a semi-god. He even has multiple alter-egos in the anime: when he wears a mask he becomes like an italian Zorro, he even calls himself "la Volpe"... Volpe means fox... Zorro, in Spanish, means fox... It was a huge meme generator. I absolutely love that show.
I love how CRD is educational with math and science but can’t explain how the baddie was able to punch the fox lady from that far away and make the plane change dimensions 😂
Btw the fox lady looks like she could be the daughter of Lt. Vixen and that wolf guy Keoteo lmao
Small theory here;
The show may be intentionally hard to follow, to encourage kids to initiate discussion with adults about the plot, which makes the kid's brain work harder while thinking about the show, embedding it deeper into their memory.

@@verticalflyingb737 Technically, the North Korean government does represent the majority of its citizens; Americans should learn not to interpret reality as they please as it is not right.
Capitalist, imperialist nations sure. But nations that are constructed by the people, run and governed by the people, through socialism, those nations are the people. North Korea might be the best example of this, through socialism they have turned from a nation of slaves on the brink of destruction to a growing nation full of hard working and determined comrades.
