The Canucks are by no means alone having put together such a flawed strategy, and they have just 2 playoff series wins, following their last Cup appearance (2011), to show for that flawed strategy.

Meanwhile the Habs, Flames, and Oilers have been drafting Canadian players for decades now and haven’t won in 30 years. Hell, from 2004 to 2015 the Leafs only ever drafted Canadians yet they were garbage. Vancouver’s most recent Canadian first round pick was Jake Virtanen, their two most recent Canadian second round picks were Jett Woo and Kole Lind . None of those players did anything at the NHL level.
No, player nationality is an excuse. The truth is that the management and/or scouting of Canadian teams are trash, and the management of some American teams are not trash. Simple as that.

Don't glorify the Bruins management too much. They have a similar history of ownership interference. The claim to fame is the tainted cup bestowed on them by the nhl and daddy Campbell.
I really enjoyed watching Willie Dejardin’s time as coach. He played all four lines almost equally and that let him spread the top forwards across all four lines in different combos throughout the season. They didn’t always win, but they were fun to watch. A few of the third & fourth line guys from that time are still floating around the league because they got so much playing experience and exposure.

I still hang that 2011 cup loss around Loungo's neck. I was a Canucks fan going back to the late 70's...but 2011 broke me. Seeing what they've done in the following years hasn't changed my mind at all. Go Oilers!

You forgot to mention the JT Miller signing for 7 YEARS at 8 million dollars. A transaction that leads directly to the departure of Bo Horvat and indirectly to the firing of Bruce Boudreau. Prioritizing Miller over Horvat was so short-sighted! All management did was ONLY look at the numbers, while ignoring all the intangibles like leadership, temperament, popularity, defensive play, faceoffs, turnovers, and the fact that Horvat was a homegrown talent, whereas Miller was acquired via a high-risk trade involving a Canucks first-round pick. A trade that initially paid off for the Canucks. But with this horrible contract they just gave Miller has turned out to be a disaster.
@NaPo7 I'll admit, Canucks management didn't forsee Horvat having a career year, thus increasing his value to the point that they couldn't re-sign him. However, it's the JOB of Canucks management to imagine various realistic "what if" scenarios. Such as, what if Miller starts to regress quicker than they expect? Or what if Horvat hits his peek in the next 3 years? By signing Miller to that contract, they eliminated a plan B and took away a crucial safety net. We see now the result of them not thinking ahead and asking themselves, what if, ahead of time.
The main point in the video was the Canuck team drafted and later traded picks while the best teams drafted to develop. Miller was a 15th overall pick who was traded to Tampa Bay and on to the Canucks. Miller cost the Canucks a 3td round AND conditional future 1st round pick. The point of the blog was that instead of bringing along their own high picks, the Canucks have been TRADING AWAY high draft picks for players who have reached their prime or are headed down hill.
In an ideal world you sell high, trade them both for great assets and kick start a much needed rebuild.

Just as confirmation that it’s all about $$$ - it seems that, as soon as Miller signed his outrageous contract, his play has become abysmal. How can the Canucks trade away their captain and one of, if not the best player on team? There’s obviously no loyalty to the team. What other factors were at play? Rumour was that there are issues in dressing room…

Come 2024 and Garland is playing so well for what he's being paid. Amazing what a different season and mentality can do.
You missed one glaring spot! Their inability to develop players. How can you draft that many players in the past decade and only a handful develop into NHL players. And they don’t even have to remain with the Canucks. The majority aren’t on any of the clubs! I’m not even suggesting they be 1st or 2nd liners. 3rd or 4th are perfectly acceptable. The scouting and development areas are their biggest problems.

My Blues are the best at developing goalies. The downside is we only end up trading them for nothing and they go on to be solid starters or backups.

I'm from Vancouver lived here since 2004. It's been crazy seeing the true colors of the city once you've been in the market for awhile, and let me just say that the large industry here mostly have no sense of directions... it's all foreign real estate money 😂 so nobody has clue how to manage cap space, if you need money they borrow it which ironically is very American like in some areas except as Canadians we can't print money nor do we own lots of secured future asset... sort of exactly like describing the dire Canucks' financial situation today sadly.
The Blues FINALLY hit that wall where not having a top 10 forward drafted since Rod Brind’Amour in the 80’s has finally caught up with us. For example, the Sabres have missed the playoffs 11 seasons in a row while the Blues have missed the playoffs 8 times in franchise history. Middle of the pack picks for decades with the exception of Johnson and Pietrangelo. Seeing how badly the Canucks’ management played this is really upsetting, lol.

Well, unfortunately, great management talent was not passed on generationally from father to son. Then, the sexual assault scandal where that cost Bowman and Quenneville their jobs and it's been downhill since. They still have Toews and Kane but the team is a doormat right now. As it's often said, a bank never failed because a teller couldn't add 2 and 2. It's always management that makes either success or failure happen. Maybe, Bobby Hull can now intervene with the Almighty on the Hawks' behalf, but I doubt even that would help. Here's hoping that their management is wiser for the future.

That the Habs are this season unlikely to see playoff action -> Canada's only hope for a Cup win will likely be with a non-Habs' team.
Going into games to be played following the All-Star Break, the:
- Leafs, 2nd in the Atlantic Division, are 14 points ahead of the 4th-place team in that division
- Jets, 2nd in the Central, are 8 points ahead of the Avs in that division
- Oilers, 4th in the Pacific, are within 2 points of a top 3 divisional spot (held by the 62-point Golden Knights)
- Flames, 5th in the Pacific, are tied with the Avs on points (57) but have played 2 more regular-season games, knocking the Alberta team to 3rd in the West wildcard race
- Sens, 6th in the Atlantic, are 6 points behind the Pens for a playoff spot but going into the All-Star Break, had earned 12 points over their last 10
- Habs and Canucks, with 44 and 43 respective points, are 13 and 14 behind the nearest available playoff spots in their conferences
I'd like to believe, with the Leafs' having failed to win a playoff series from the 2005-06 to the 2021-22 season, a non-Leafs' non-Habs' Canadian team will this season win a Cup. Which team will that be? It'll likely have to be 1 of the Jets, Oilers and Flames because although the Sens are 6 points out of a playoff spot, the:
- Caps, Pens, Sabres, Isles and Panthers are ahead of the Sens, with a requirement for the Southeastern Ontario team to leapfrog over 4 of the other teams whilst also ensuring neither the Flyers nor Wings pass them
- Canucks, over a dozen points out of a playoff spot are unlikely to make up anywhere near enough ground to get into such a spot

45 Years before I was born, The Vancouver Millionaires won the Stanley Cup, 10 years later the Victoria Cougars won it...the last non-NHL Team to do so. So in BC Canada we had 2 Stanley Cup Winners PRIOR to THE RED LINE and WW2. When I was born in 1959 the Vancouver Canucks were a WHL Minor Pro Team. A top player for them in the 50's and 60's was Phil Maloney who played on the WHL Canucks later coached them in 1973-74. In 1970-71 I got a to see my 1st Canucks Game at the Pacific Coliseum when I was 11 years old. I also saw the Vancouver Blazers (WHA) play the Toronto Toros of the WHA in 1975 when i was 15. So I also saw the 3 series where the Canucks made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The 1st of those was a mismatch as they lost to the dynastic New York Islanders (which would probably have defeated any Stanley Cup Winner of the past 25 years, so losing in 5 games to them was no disgrace). The 1993-4 loss to the New York Rangers in 7 was a whisker away from a WIN and between that close series and the 2011 loss in 7 games to the Boston Bruins gives you an appreciation of how Soccer/Football/Futbol World Cup Final "multiple losers" like Holland and Hungary must feel. of course they are "WINNERS" by just being in it! So I have that sort of attitude for the Canucks. As a kis to a teen I was a Montreal Canadiens Fan so I saw them win 8 Stanley Cups in 12 years (a better team than even the Islanders of course). Chicago would have won in 1965, 1971 and 1973 had Montreal not been there to beat them in the FINALS. Same for Boston in both 1969 and 1971 (I never met either Orr or Esposito but I did experience 2 weeks of Hockey School at age 9 in 1969 when Captain Johnny Bucyk and Johnny "Pie" McKenzie taught us in SUMMER, McKenzie took me and another kid that was having trouble skating backwards and in 1 hour he molded us into decent backward skaters for our age group)! Arguably Boston should have won in both 1969 and 1971 but being a Canadiens Fan i was glad that Montreal won. I even predicted that Jean Beliveau would score the OT winner in game 6, as Montreal won all 3 OT Games in that series which was even more exciting than the 1971 win where Ken Dryden won the Conn Smythe BEFORE winning the CALDER Trophy as ROOKIE of the YEAR the next year! He was THAT GREEN! But with 1.65 GAA in 9 games prior to the PLAYOFFS it was no fluke either! Anyway the Canucks might need another 5-6 years to get to another Stanley Cup Final, and hopefully finally win one when they do.
For the 2011 team, I will say a good word on the team management's behalf. They bought in what the NHL told all the teams - that they would eliminate much of the rough stuff and focus on skating and puck handling, which the league's official crew largely did until the playoffs. How can anyone forget that when Marchand slapping Daniel Sedin around with the referee standing right next to them, Sedin looked at the ref who just shrugged it off. This just seared in my memory. I also remember Thornton saying that had Boston not won, players like him would not have a place in the league.
Acquilini got the taste of money during the success of the late 00's and ultimately the 2011 cup run, he wanted it so bad he fired the one guy that LOVED the team and cared for its success. Since then the team has been on a steep downward spiral. It is the greed from the owner you see all this...

I'd like to be optimistic for next season, but I believe it will be another 3-5 years before the Canucks can turn things around. Their situation is so screwed up that this will require massive trading and new signings to get it right.
Their previous GMs have either traded away draft picks like "someone handing out candy on Halloween" or in Jim Benning's case went all out in FA with veteran signings with term.
Let's be honest. Bruce's firing was a blessing in disguise. He no longer has to deal with the NHL's bullshit. I feel bad for him, for sure, but I'm glad he no longer has to put up with their fuckery anymore.

It would be fun to see a video on the Stars turnaround this season. The predictions leading into the season across the board seemed to be they were not a playoff team and look at them now.
They're definitely better than they were last year but it's not that big of a turnaround. I didn't see any way of them missing the playoffs.

The Canucks' "General Manager" and "President of hockey operations" positions have been a revolving door of embarrassment. The only thing worse is ownership, and we're stuck with them. I hope everyone on the Canucks who is any good gets the opportunity to jump ship, the way Horvat did, and salvage their careers. The Canucks organization is a nut-house being run by the nutjobs.

Bruce Boudreau seemed to inspire the team when he started as the coach, but even he couldn't make a contending team out of the players he was given. So, management made him the fall guy as it's easier to fire 1 coach than 20-odd players. But, as it is said, a bank never failed because one teller couldn't add 2 and 2; it's always the management who charts the success or failure of any company, corporation, or sports franchise. The owner should take a long look in a mirror to find the main person responsible for this ongoing mess.

I think RTH is very close to the main issues with the Canucks. As a fan of the Canucks going way back to the 82 Cup Finalists team or even before (was still a toddler back then so don't know for sure) I can say that the problem with the Canucks is not so much they're selecting bad draft picks when they do get to select draft picks, but:
1- They keep trading away too many draft picks in panic moves to solve short term problems at long term cost
2- They're not good enough at developing their minor league talent into NHL level talent.
Let me explain #2 a bit more. Most draft picks beyond the top round are not naturally NHL ready. For that matter, many 1st round picks are not usually NHL ready out the gate. They need to be developed and learn the skills to perform well at the NHL level. That the Canucks have so few draft picks and homegrown talent in their roster is in part a testimant to the failure of their organization to properly prepare their young talent to be NHL ready and then properly give them the shot if/when they are. So 1 of 3 things must be happening to their homegrown talent, in any combination:
1- They're trading too many of them away for aging veterans
2- They're losing them to free agency when they fill up too man roster spots with overpaid, aging veterans who can't live up to their pay grade
3- They're failing to develop their young talent sufficiently for them to be good enough to play at the NHL level
Those 3 problems you can't solve by just making better draft picks, or making more draft picks. You have to have the right minor league system in place to develop them to be capable of playing in the NHL, then you have to have the patience with them to let them learn the game, and the confidence in them to let them play the game when they're ready, and the wisdom to recognize the difference between not good enough and not ready yet.
The Canucks as an organization, since 2011 has failed at all of that. So the prodogcies, the Thatcher Demco, Elias Petterson and Quinn Houghes types will make it, as they're so good from the Juniors to go at the NHL level with minimal development and can out work and out skill the aging veterans right out of the roster. But what about the Hogalnders and Joe Lunchapails in the farm system? They don't stand a chance to edging out $7.5 mil a year OEL or $4.5 mil a year Garland. The team NEEDS to play those guys regardless, for as long as they're at least "good enough" as they can't afford that much cap hit and not be playing them.
These issues have transcended many coaching staffs and GMs, so it's not any of them that are the source. It's not the players as they have no control over broad roster and management decisions. They're doing the best they can with what they have, which is each other. It has to trace to the top, the owner, Fransesco Aquilini got silver eyes and lost sight of the bigger picture. Either he has to learn from his mistakes, and do better now we've got a full new coaching and management team - use this as a chance at a fresh start. Or he has to sell the team to a new owner who's not blinded by the silver lights of an almost cup.

I follow all 32 teams and try to watch as many games as I can. I’ve always been a Blackhawks fan, but knowing that they would be trash this year, I decided to follow a second team closer than the others. I (foolishly) chose Vancouver because I was intrigued by the end of last season and I generally like the team, broadcast crew and Bruce Boudreau. Needless to say, it has not gone well. Somehow after watching the Hockey Guy’s channel for 5 years and listening to him lament his Canucks fandom, I did not see this coming. Even though Bruce is gone, I’m still watching every game. I’m invested in the team now. I’m likely a fan for life. That said, I very much disagree with how management and ownership has run this team. I like JT Miller but that contract is atrocious and I don’t support some of his antics, I’m glad he cares though and is passionate about winning. My hope for this season is that they play Podkolzin and Silovs and the kids more, get them playing time and retool in the summer. Get through a training camp with Toc and see how next year goes. Management still doesn’t give me high hopes but, I’d rather be optimistic, no matter how many times I’m wrong. On the bright side, being a fan of two terrible teams, doubles my chances of getting Bedard on one of them.

Small correction. The OEL trade happened at the draft. Benning and Green were fired roughly two months into the season. Definitely not a week later. I think you may have been thinking of when Edmonton fired Chiarelli right after he extended Miiko Koskinen.
Ownership is the key to any franchise. Teams with good owners do well, generally. Teams with poor owners do not. Look at the Clippers in basketball. They had top 3 picks in the draft for 30 years. And in basketball, you only need 3 players to really compete.The team was sold, and they got better. Look at the Tampa Rays. One of the lowest payrolls in baseball, but always in the mix.

It wasn't just Linden who asked for a rebuild and got shot down, then "fired". Gillis wanted the same almost a decade ago and was also fired. Gillis saw the writing on the wall with the then team. The guy misses the playoffs once in 6 years and gets fired because he wanted a rebuild. Benning misses the playoffs like 5/6 years or something crazy like that and he gets resigned. That pretty much should tell everyone that the owner was the true GM of the team when Benning was in charge. Owner, who's a fan and not an actual GM, hired Benning only because he was a yes man. Benning made some really terrible moves and I'm not sure how much of this had to do with the owner. But one thing is clear... ownership never wanted a rebuild and thus cause this whole mess. 100%, this team/PR nightmare is the end result of ownership's meddling/decision making.

What did I do in my previous life to be a Canucks fan? It has been nothing but pain. We won't even tank right to end the season. Demko will come back from injury, regain his form from last year and steal a bunch of games for Vancouver. Can't wait for them to pick 11th overall this year.

One thing with "overpaying" is that there's a massive team-by-team difference between what the team pays and what the player gets. I think this is one thing I'd fix from the salary cap.
Now whether it makes Canucks any better or even worse, is a whole different topic.
Also for cap space, it is important to consider how much of that space is due to long term injuries. For example, you add Gabriel Landeskog to an Avalanche roster and we're talking about quite a big chunk of the cap space being/not being free.
As an avs fan I want to point out that when it came to the roster on the ice in the playoffs, all the avs players that were drafted by the avs were a top 10 pick sans Alex Newhook who was a top 20. Pretty much everyone else was brought in via trade.

Yep and Mckinnon at 6.3 million was a huge factor. They need a center to take advantage of his great contract ending this year. Their window of opportunity will end after this year so they had better find a center fast. Toews would be ideal in my mind but they will probably have to negotiate hard and give up some picks to get him.
@@carlosvangrinder3754 This is purely my opinion but instead pf the rumors of every UFA center being linked to Colorado, I'd personally prefer a repeat of the Kadri situation and trade for someone like Nick Schmaltz, to get a center that isn't washed out with term. As for MacKinnon's contract increase, not to worried as Erik Johnson and his 6mil also expire. Bo being injured and Newhook not being able to fill the 2C role will allow us to resign them cheaper.
@@arturayzenberg5432 My guess is Colorado will end up with just a rental and just let Newhook grow into the position. They have a lot of challenges coming next year to control the cap. Newhook and Bo are going to change the cap situation by at least 5 million more so they will have their hands full filling the rooster next year much like Edmonton has every year. 12.6 million in a flat cap era is a big mistake in my view, but we shall see.

In the offseason if I am Colorado I would aim for creating a shutdown bottom 6 which can usually be brought in for under 2mil each (think players like Luke Schenn or giving Englund another go next season.
I'm an advocate for trading Girard purely for cap reasons. Colorado would like need a solid 2C for a season or 2 after this one so Newhook can develop a bit more. Compher will likely be lost in the offseason but outside of that between MacKinnon-New 2C-Newhook-Myers? Colorado is alright down the middle.

This is still the reason I won’t watch the Canucks. They can’t win when it matters & are predictable as well. If they ever win the cup, I might watch them again. It’s been more than 10 years since I watched a Canucks game. I won a bet with former coworkers years ago for this exact reason!!

I honestly don't care about any of the crap that's happened over the last decade as a Canucks fan. If I could reverse just one thing, it would be the OEL + Garland deal. I would still be totally fine trading Bo (I wanted him and Miller gone), but to have Guenther and that cap space? Man. Things are so much different with just that one move.

I was never into the canucks but man the early 2010s was dope with the back to back presidents trophies and the cup final run literally jsut 1 win short from winning it all. Ever since the mid 2010s they've been just an inconsistent dumpster fire and even more by the late 2010s when the Sedins retired. A duo like the Sedins we might never see again literally cause of their images and while I never liked the canucks as a team the Sedins were one of my biggest idols growing up

Nucks won't have cap space to re-sign him as they have too many bad contracts now and are already over the cap.
