- Hello again... Finally!
After a week of technology hating me, I was finally able to upload my latest project, The Morrigan. I do a lot of little mockups and sketches when I'm not painting . Usually, to improve my drawing skills and get ideas for future compositions. I have yet to do a sketchbook tour, so let me know if that's something that interests you all.
I have a confession to make... I am a huge fan of fantasy and mythology. I have always loved stories that are based in other made up worlds. Most of my sketches reflect this kind of thing. A lot of the sketches never become paintings, but I'm wondering if that would be something you all would like to see. I would like to experiment a bit with these sketches and make them into mixed media paintings, but I sometimes feel like I switch things up too much.
The truth is that I enjoy using different mediums, techniques and subjects. People say you have to stick with one thing, but I would get bored and there would be very little for me to discover about myself and I feel like I wouldn't grow as an artist. Sometimes I feel like collage... Sometimes I don't. Sometimes I'm all about texture... Sometimes I'm not. I've been exploring the world of watercolors lately and have discovered that I suck at them! I will learn though!
The point is (and I do have one) I'm basically sharing all of the techniques and mediums that I love with all of you, as well as the new discoveries I make along the way so you can try them too and see if they fit into your own processes.
I hope you enjoyed the video!

YES, YES YES to a video on transferring & enlarging sketches to canvas! Thank You Lydia🥰
Yes please🎉
Everything we paint is actually a self-portrait, be it a landscape, an illustration, or an abstract. I see you in all your beautiful work and I love the strength, intelligence and other-dimensionality of your work. I am enjoying your videos so much. Thank you Lydia. You really are such a talent and a very inspiring artist. Your technical ability is astounding. Can't praise you highly enough. Keep going girl. Your brush strokes are quite structural and very strong so I believe you would also be an awesome sculptor. Great stuff. xx
Thank you Lydia. Beautiful painting and the concept is spot on for me with the legend of the Morrigan, love her legends. Thank you for sharing your process and tips, it's very kind of you.
I love watching you paint! It's so beautiful! ❤️✨
Love this. Watching you bring her to life was wonderful. Thankyou. WOW 🤩 ❤
Looking forword to your next piece is never disappointing or underwhelming. This is yet an absolutely beautiful painting. Especially your perspective on lore of such. I love it.
Also, since you asked, it would be awesome to see your process of scanning and resizing! Thank you and take care : )
Thank you so much! I will definitely do a video on the resizing!👍😊❤
Yesssssss video on tranfering and enlarging and all the good stuff.
I would love to see a video on transferring and enlarging …. Thank you Miss Lydia!!!
This is wonderful!! As a practising pagan I feel you really captured The essence of The Morrigan really well...she looks like a sketch I once did of the Goddess Anu. More of this please ❤
This is an amazing painting. I love how the two side crows also look like a dark angel's wing. The gold leaf across the two crows and her chest decoration adds so much. I also like the mythology explained. I look forward to anything you do.
Thank you Monica!!!❤❤❤
LOVE - so awesome. Gold leaf is a nice touch to this! Always full process ❤
She is hauntingly beautiful. I love your concept of the crow wings representing the sisters. The gold leaf is such a wonderful contrast to all the darkness. And the cloudy background gives her such a presence. I'm giving this three thumbs up (actually, two thumbs and at least one paw - my cat enjoyed watching your hands move and stayed through the whole video, so I think she should also get a vote). Yes please, on all of your preliminary work.
Love it from concept to completion❤ Yes, to a video on transferring technique 😊
Thank you Lynn! ❤
Yes please on the concept sketch and transfer tutorial! Thank you! Love the goddess theme/series. Very cool.
Love to watch your techniques. I always learn something new.

Hello from Canada Beautiful Lydia So amazing to watch your process. Thanks for sharing
You're the Goddess of painting! Love the whole idea and the wonderful story of the 3 sisters. Love the crows as the sisters shape shifting! My kind of story in paint!
Hi Lydia, she's a beauty! Love the story and the lesson today. I would like to see your whole process too, from concept drawing to transfer onto canvas. Would love to see your idea of the "old hag" to go along with this one. Your young concept drawings are so cute.... you've come a long way baby...lol.
The old hag would be cool! Thank you!!!❤😊
Wonderful ❤️and yes, would love to see that process please.
Yes, would love a video on transferring.
Yes please. Transfer video I love you narration. Such a cool story. Nice going there my friend!!
Thank you Michelle!!!❤❤❤
Gold leaf is always a good idea… And I now I know why crows always seem to get a bad rap!! Awesome birds, super smart and crafty… I like how you do birds… I have huge vulture I did framed in my living room and few others, a rooster, a toucan, odd birds not many would think of painting… Thank you again Lydia, have a good evening 🥰
Thank you! Vultures must be fun to paint... I never thought of painting one until now. Toucan play at that game. Just kidding. Seriously though, sometime I would love to see your bird paintings. Have a wonderful night😊❤
I'm just speechless! ❤❤❤
Yes please Lydia I would live to see transferring pictures to canvas xcl❤❤

Thank you!!!❤❤❤☺

❤❤❤
❤
Mindblowing! And you totally captured the Wednesday stare. I wish I could hop on a plane to the US and meet you. A video on your transfer process would be fantastic.
PS: I'm fascinated by all kinds of folklore. Tribal lore here in SA is interesting too, like Modjadji, the Rain Queen. The last crowned queen died at the age of 27 in 2005, and her successor still needs to be crowned. Makobo Modjadji's life reads like a novel - royal obligations, forbidden love in the face of cultural and traditional expectations, an untimely and questionable death. It is believed that Modjadji can control the clouds and rivers, bringing rain and prosperity to her people when needed. Where she lives, the land is always green. The Royal Council is currently planning on overthrowing the rule of the Rain Queens by handing the reign to a prince from the royal household. With dinamic stories like this, happening in real life, I don't have time to follow the UK royals 😉😉
Oh wow! That is fascinating! I'm going to look that up!❤❤❤
Omg. I’m a pagan, and She is one of my patron goddesses.
Beautiful ! The gold leaf adds so much to an already beautiful painting. Yes, please to the video of your whole process from sketching to resizing in the computer and transferring to the canvas😊

Precioso! I would also like to learn how to Transfer a sketch into a larger canvass. Thanks 😊
Ok you are like my favorite! Almost every single project is exactly the subject matter I’d choose to paint myself. You are incredibly talented and create amazing pieces. Sending love from a fellow weirdo 😉 ❤
Thank you Shannon!!! It's always a pleasure to meet a fellow weirdo!😁❤❤❤
@@lydiabroderick867 thank you I had a long unwanted break from painting but watching your videos has me inspired again. Reminded me just to be myself and paint what I really love. So currently at this moment I’m finally working on a large collage while watching the fellowship of the ring 😂.
@@shannonkeenan0808 Ohhhh... You are totally my kind of weirdo. That is a great way to enjoy the day!!!❤❤❤
I would definitely appreciate a video on enlarging and transferring sketches. Thank you so much
Hi Karen! I did a video for enlarging and transferring right after this one. Here's the link!😊

I hope you find it helpful!❤❤
Hello Sunshine! This is a beautiful painting. Again, I love watching your process and the evolving layers. I had to laugh at your - "the Netflix show The Addams Family." The Addams Family was on regular TV when I was growing up. One of my teachers in grade school in Jamaica used to call me "Cousin Itt" because I guess my hair reminded her of Cousin Itt! That was a long time ago and far away! Keep on doing these beautiful goddess paintings! Yes please to transferring/enlarging sketches. But I want to come and learn from you how to paint faces!!!
Thank you Janina! I remember the original Addams Family! I also still have the original Charles Addams books with all the amazing illustrations. The Mother Goose one is a little dark. Which totally appeals to me. 😄 I am going to work on some more goddesses. I love all of the symbolism I can incorporate.❤
@lydiabroderick867 Well I didn't even know that there was a Charles Addams - or that he had a book! Wow! You and your dark side! 😆 Bring on those goddesses, girl! We love 'em - and the stories you tell about them. Shamefully, I'd never heard of The Morrigan. You've now educated me!👍💝
Stunnning again. Love the goldleaf effects. I would love you to make a tutorial on scetch size cganging. That is an issue. I dont really get the scetch hardly ever drawn in to a bigger size. I'd be happy for that . Mythology is such interesting to study. Keep on the great work 💞
Thank you!!!❤❤❤
Amazing piece!
BD
Thank you!❤❤❤
Miss Lydia I just want to tell you HOW BRILLIANT funny and beautiful you are , you have inspired me so much!!! I am self taught and always worry that I’m not quite enough but I just really really appreciate your artwork, your humor, and your videos… did you study formally?? I just want to thank you for sharing your knowledge, talent , and humor…… you are a true Peach , Most Kindly, Dory D.
Thank you so much Dory!!! I didn't go to art school although I wanted to. It wasn't in the cards for me.❤❤❤ I appreciate the kind words.
Yes please show us the process you use
Wow, I really love this! The gold leaf really makes it… Even though it was awesome without it! I love the idea of a whole goddess series. This painting would make a cool tarot card… your early concept drawings were adorable!
Thanks mom!!! My restaurant placemat concept sketches!😄 I'm glad you like the painting! ❤❤❤
Love, love, love the vibrancy of this painting.. she is stunning. Question for you.. will the gold leaf tarnish over time.
Hi Michelle! I used 24k gold leaf which does not tarnish. However, if you use imitation gold leaf, you will have to seal it to prevent tarnishing.😊
I'm obsessed with the story of the Morrigan and your painting of her! Did you know that in the version where she is 3, it is a Celtic retelling of the Greek version of the 3 fates?
I didn't know that! I know the story of the 3 fates, but I wasn't aware that it was a retelling. Super cool!
This is amazing :D All your work is amazing
Thank you! I will definitely do a video on the transfer!👍❤
INCREDIBLE! You never disappoint in showing different styles, paint "types", etc. Mostly your creative process and concepts are always mind-blowing. You imagination is that of a deeply unstable individual...qualities vital to unique expression. Will you marry me? 😅😅🤪😘
Thank you Michelle!!! Are you sure you'd want to marry a deeply unstable individual? Lol!❤❤❤😘
Very powerful look. Absolutly well caught. The gold makes this oainting very special! When you draw your concept, do you have already a picture in mind, did you scetch before to get an idea? Do you do your drawings with pen and ink? Me, as someone from the north of Germany, my ancasters had to be vikings 😉 , love nordic mytology.
Thank you! I sketch with pencil first. Then use illustration pens on top. I love the Nordic mythology as well! I did a drawing of the tree a awhile ago (yggdrasil). I wonder where it is...🤔
What are your favorite brand acrylic paint brushes?
My favorite brushes are by Trekell. But I also like some of the Princeton synthetic brushes.
I am a beginner, love your work and am wondering if it is possible to varnish an oil and acrylic painting ...
Yes! You can use Gamvar by Gamblin once the oil paint is dry to the touch. It allows the oil paint to continue curing. I will usually wait a week before varnishing. Gamvar is great for mixed media oil paintings.
Thank you muchly for letting me know.
I'm just starting to paint with Oils. How would you suggest to best learn which colors are transparent and which are opaque?
Hi there! Usually the darkest colors are the most transparent. The lightest colors will be opaque. You can test them out on your palette with a little thinner. Opaques will look milky when thinned out and transparents will not. Also, once you know, you can label your tubes with a "T" or an "O" as a helpful reminder. That's what I did when I started with oils.😊
Is this available for purchase? I would very much like to add this stunning piece to my altar for Herself.
It is! Email me lydiabroderickfineart@gmail.com
