  • I have been fleshing off of stretcher boards and tables and find it hard on my back. Some things i wanted to try this year were fleshing off a beam and doing beaver on my knee sitting down. So first step, build a simple board. It is based off of a fox board and is made from a 2"x6" (i used a 2x10). Simple to build and we shall see how it works.

I made one based on this design, 5.5” (2x6) was a good size. I made mine about 4’ long from some scrap, and screwed it to a sawhorse and it works great

seems like it is split down the middle. Some guys love em and some don't. That is why i made it with pine and didn't mount it anywhere. If i don't like it, it will heat the garage for an hour or so. lol

YUP Adam...I could partake in a few of those cans with the blue mountains on them and access the fleshing beam while you try it out.

Looks good. I prefer a beam mounted like that. I find it easier on my back. Little tougher with beaver cuz they want a slip and slide a bit.

I'm not a trapper, but I'm a hunter. And usually I never keep the hide, but I've always felt bad for getting rid of it instead of keeping it and tanning it to use it. I was curious about what size fleshing board I need for fleshing deer, bear elk, pretty much any big game. Also what fleshing knife should I look for. Also if I do the drying process instead of using salt, do I still have to do a salt bath before applying the tanning solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you dry the hide, it is not preserved. So any moisture can cause bacteria to start growing or even mold. When we ship fur to auction we just dry them, but they go in a large cooler/freezer and are taken care of properly. You can use anything you want as a beam. I often do beavers on a flat piece of plywood.

@@AdamCraigOutdoors ok thanks for the response, so I should definitely so like a salt bath I've seen other videos of people tanning deer hides do?
