  • Australia's original jazzman, Don Burrows, died age 91 in March 2020 after a long battle with Azheimer's disease. We look back at his enduring friendship with saxophonist James Morrison and how the mentee became the mentor in his final years.
When 16-year-old music student James met the legendary jazz maestro in 1978, it was one of the biggest turning points in his life.
After hearing James play, Don immediately took the young trumpeter under his wing, becoming his mentor and inviting him to join the Burrows band.
It was the beginning of an enduring friendship, both on stage and off and as Don's health faded, James became his legal guardian and stepped up to help care for his friend.

Don’t we wish that we all had friends like that! Wonderful inspiring documentary. It is an inspiring story needed in times like these.

I've seen and heard James Morrison play a half dozen times at the Newport Beach California Jazz Festival, purchased his book and own several of his CDs -- and this film is breathtakingly sweet and inspiring after my 92 year old father (and lifelong jazz musician and fan) died in December 2019. In a time of pandemic, dislocation, and despair, this story brightened my day. Whomever put it together and posted it, thank you.

I wish I'd put a bucket either side of me before I watched this, there are tears everywhere.
I saw James Morrison perform a few weeks ago, along with Andy Firth, another musician whom Don mentored. Don was definitely mentioned multiple times throughout the concert and if I remember rightly at least one song was performed in his memory.

Many years ago, I was a cocky, know-nothing young musician ( muso! ) in Sydney, studying @ Sydney university conservatorium & playing in the house orchestra of the Silver Spade room ( in an EXCELLENT Australian hotel in Sydney, forgot the name ) with the wonderful Australian musicians of the Billy Burton orchestra and having the time of my life. My idols at that time & place were Graeham Lyall, Errol Buddle &, of course, Don Burrows! So many times I have listened to Don & tried to learn everything I could. What a fine place of musical excellence Sydney has always been. Those were halcyon days. John.

One of my treasured LPs is the Don Burrows Quartet playing at the jazz festival at Montreux, Switzerland. I saw him live several times at various venues and they are great memories too. A true legend. so sad that he has passed away. Thanks to James and his family for what they have done.

I remember seeing James Morrison and the Don Burrows Quartet in about 1987 in Townsville, Far North Queensland when I was in the Army. I never realised the deep friendship these two had for all these years. I mostly follow James, strangely because I played clarinet and saxophone, and I know what a genuine person James is but this is next level friendship.

Great to see this was done to capture the friendship. I loved the last scene where JM and sons play “I’ll be seeing you”. If anyone is interested, I have a few videos of Don and George Golla at Norfolk Island on my channel
