  • Hi guys and gals!
    I have an 80s EVM 12L speaker and a Celestion Vintage 30 (UK made) in my guitar cab so I decided to do a quick shootout/comparison. Both speakers are 8 ohm and are wired in series.
    IMPORTANT NOTE: EVM has been rewound a couple of years ago, so it might be a deviation in the sound and the character from the production speaker.
    No postproduction was done on the recording other than a high pass filter at 100 Hz.
    Speaker were recorded with Shure SM57 into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (1st gen), and then edited in Reaper. Guitar used is a Schecter Fastback Diamond Series (Seymour Duncan JB - bridge; Seymour Duncan Jazz - neck, played with a split coil in the video). Amp is Victory VX Kraken, both channels were used with all setting around noon.

    Combining speakers is a great way to get a full tone! Good job!

    It's a nice job to have an idea of their character. Obviously they are both mounted on the same cabinet in series and this factors can influence each other but I still think it's a nice work.
    It would be great a third mic in the room so that we could listen the impact on a certain distance that makes more understandable the real sound.
    The work is commendable, good 😉

      Thank you for checking it out and commenting. I'm glad you like it. I agree that having an opportunity to put a room mic would provide an even better comparison, but I was limited with time on this one, so this was the best I could do back then.

    The Vintage 30 holds its own against the EVM12L. The two together sound great.

    Cool video will the high mids come to hear more if you push the EV12L so it get pushed as much as the V30 RMS watt?
    I hope you understand that?

      Oba zvučnika imaju nešto svoje, V30 je ode, po običaju, agresivan i in-your-face nekako zvuk. Nedavno sam napravija Thiele box za EVM-a i u prostoru odlično zvuči. Još ga nisam ima priliku snimit, nažalost.

    Cool demo. I have an 80s Empty Mesa vertical 212 cab I came into possession of. I have an EV12L out of a mint 84 Mark iic+ combo and am considering a Mesa V30 to pair with the EV in that cab. I hate the China made V30s. Too harsh.

  • @TheXxPSYCHO
    @TheXxPSYCHO Před 2 lety +1

    Everyone uses the V30 because it really is the best guitar speaker. Sure there are others like it but you'll never beat the availability, price, and sound of a V30

    • @danyeo
      @danyeo Před rokem +1

      The Chinese one's from 2019 back to around 2009 were about the worst speaker. Harsh, nasty, spikes. Weird because I had old Mesa cabs from the 90's with V30's that sound AWESOME. Celestion had made changes over the years, The new one's sound good, the old one's sound good. Those middle years sound like an ice pick into your brain.

    I think the EVM 12 L is a little over hyped. Sounds great-yes, but so does the Vin30. Lots of options for speaker tones that don't involve paying 500 for a single speaker.

    • @ljuky
      @ljuky  Před 4 lety +2

      I totally agree. There are so many options now, and when you take into consideration that subtle differences in moc position change the sound a lot it seems that almost every speaker is usable for recording. Thankfully, my EVM 12L was paid used around the same price as the V30. I still have to see how does the 12L sound in a Thiele box, that seems to be the best use for it.

    • @thorinbane
      @thorinbane Před 4 lety +4

      Cab construction is also important. I have made about 7 cabs so far and every one had a different character. I tried dove tail, pocket screws, lap joints, reg plywood (1/2 and 3/4), birch(12mm, 18mm), poplar planks(1 inch think), mahogany, and they have all ousnded very different even with the same speakers. As you mentioned mic positioning changes everything again. Room mic, close mic, ribbon vs condenser vs dynamic mic. Software may have an impact. SO many variables.
      Not even covering pickups on guitar and the amp itself. Sound chain is way more complex than I like Les Paul and Marshall. Which Marshall is that, JCM, JMP, JTM, DSL, Bluesbreaker??? All similar but different. Did you have Burstbuckers or 490, 61, dirty fingers???
      I like my 61s in my les paul junior, but I also love the JB in my Washburn and the custom custom in my Godin. P-Rails give a lot of versatility so those are great too.
      Simple tone shaping that many forget, use your tone and volume knobs. Set your amp with your knobs rolled off a bit. It gives you a boost instead of just a cut. Set tone on your guitar at 6-7 this gives you the ability to brighten up what you are playing as well as darken. Volume at 7.5-8.5 gives you a little extra gain if you need it somewhere.
      When I first started playing, I might as well not even have had knobs on the guitar.

      The EVM12L has a pretty flat and dull sound. It's like a speaker where someone put a sponge in front of the mic. Try the Celestion S303 though. The sound of a V30 but with the dynamic balls of a G65.

      Of course. This video was intended just to show the differences/similarities between two speakers using same amp settings, mic and mic position. In a recording situation you can get great tones both from this amp and from the speakers used.
