When ballet movies show pointe shoes ribbons tied up to the knees
As someone who doesn't dance, why would this be a problem? Is it because it would cause chaffing?
@@carlycrays2831 That's just not how they're worn. The ribbons are only around the ankles. I imagine that would really restrict movement, but nobody does it like that so I'm not sure.
@@tatumgross9391 its the way it sits on the muscles aswell because as you said constricts movement and muscle flexing.
Its also more likely to cause injury
@@tatumgross9391 The only thing, as a non dancer, that I can think of is a costume attachment. Regular fastening like most dancers, with long ribbons attached to the shoe to cover the functional fasteners and wrap up the leg for dramatic visual effect? Meaning that the long ribbons have no functional fastening purpose? That would be my guess. I imagine that it would still be annoying for the dancer as she moves her leg muscles.
Oh, I can feel the pain just imagining it lol
My ballet ick is when parents literally are arguing with the studio because they want their 7 year old to be on pointe for their damn nutcracker for the instagram. Your kid’s feet aren’t formed yet. You’re gonna cripple her. 🙄
Oh my God, this! It also happened when I was a teenager.
Maybe they didn't realize the Lulaby League members were ADULTS
Fr and I see videos of people that age in pointe like that’s just bad coaching
Hate it in general when people prioritise social media over their children
Mine were 💀💀 I haven’t grown out of size 3-4 and I’m 17 now (almost 18). When my feet didn’t grow for 4-5 years my company started letting me dance in pointe bc I was growing tall but not growing in my feet 😅
When theres a movie about ballet/pointe and it’s insanely inaccurate like “these are my great great great grandmothers pointe shoes that are bright red and are in perfect condition and we don’t even know if you’re ready for pointe yet cause I’ve been training you for like a month”
Edit: I’m loving all these replies saying leap 💀💀 i thought I was the only one who felt like leap was insanely inaccurate lmaoo
leap… 😬
Literally Leap 😭
I have such a hard time explaining as a ballerina why I hate the Leap movie
I don’t do ballet but I know you’re talking about leap and I understand your pain 😂😂 even me as a different type of dancer I know it’s not possible
@@BrieBrie09 especially that insane “leap” that she does over like 10 stairs at the end 😂😭
as much as i agree with this i think leap is a very cute movie and im a big fan
Putting people on pointe before they are ready ✨ick✨
Exactly what i wanted write!
Sweaty barre after someone gripped it with sweaty hands. 🤢
I’m that person with the sweaty hands ROFL
sorry queen 😅
Ikr but the barre is always sticky in my class
They can't help it
The WORST
when people say that *sport name * is harder than ballet/dance, or that ballet/dance is easy. and then when you try to explain to them what makes ballet so hard, they still say its easy
I think I speed skiing and horse high diving are slightly harder than ballet tbh
@@shimmershine6902 i have no clue what horse high diving is, but i would probably agree. im talking about sports like basketball and such, which are fairly difficult, but ballet/dance are much more difficult (im speaking from experience)
Exactly! Like people are always saying, "Ballet is so easy" or something like that. Like, would you like to come to one of my classes and stand on your toes for two hours? I don't think so.
when people painfully force their turn out (do it from your hips, not your feet!!! it’s okay if it’s not 180°!) or when they don’t understand staggering lines and finding “windows”/visible spots in center. i’ve had people in classes literally move themselves to stand BEHIND me after i’ve moved to give them room!
YESSSS, it's literally my biggest ick when they don't stagger during center. Like I can't see myself at all literally just move two feet to the left.
Literally literally.
I don't do ballet but as a dancer/musical theater performer the not doing windows properly GETS ME. Especially if I have to do lifts or kicks, like do you WANT me to hit you?????
Yes! When someone behind me is like "I can't see", bitch, I'm not looking out for you - look out for yourself & find your window because when we're out of the studio & on stage without mirror, it's your job to find your window, not mine😊
I’ve had so many nightmares about this since I was a kid , I’m 30 and I still have these dreams 🤣
When people won’t stfu during class 💀💀
That's me in ballet classes, but I don't like ballet and am forced to learn so 😭💀💀
Yees omg i know it's almost a year ago but I hate when people talk to me in class but the instructor wants everybody's attention and they still won't stop talking Like stfu i don't wanna get yelled at
My ballet ick is how bad my dance bag smells lol
MEE😭😭
Same😅
Lol put a cup of vinegar in the machine when you wash it next, and hang it out to dry in the sun
Wash it with white vinegar. I'd also suggest spraying the inside with slightly diluted lemon essential oil.
If you live in a cold snowy climate you can stick it in a snow bank and when you have to wear that stuff and it's cold and stinky, you may just decide to wash your stuff next time as soon as you get home.
When people don't know how to use their space. Or don't switch lines when the teacher says to switch lines so you get cramped in the back because people are apparently afraid of the mirrors or something
Oh my gosh when people get in my space when they have so much space next to them. It’s so annoying
My favorite is when people don't know how to dance in their space and almost kill you when you do across the floor. Then blame it on the room being to small 🥴
@@tonguepop9453 or better yet, the ones actively dancing on top of you. Gives me unbridled rage, and can actively ruin across the floor for me.
@@Emimousiekin I love doing something like small assembles, I was taught not to move much and to go in a horizontal line not vertical for movement and will actively tell people to go in front of me, still I'll have people demand to be behind me and literally run into me with no regard or self awareness. I feel people are quite lucky fist fights are looked down upon in a dance class.
@@ImMissAmericanaNotYou Honestly, sometimes I feel like saying "hi, do you see me? Am I a ghost?"
THE CONSTANTLY INJURED ONE is such a theatre Ick for me as somebody who’s always genuinely injured before show, just horribly unlucky with timing
The deodorant one was the best! IT HAD TO BE SAID AND IT WAS! ✨👏🏻
I am a dancer and my biggest ick is also sickled feet
And when a girl thinks she is better then every one and corrects you and then the teacher says that you are doing it wrong but you got it from the girl who CORRECTED YOU 😤😤
Had a girl like that in my class, and no one liked her. It's funny, because she would try to show off extra in class, but no one would give her attention for it. The instructor would occasionally, but I don't think the girl cared, just wanted to show off to the class her ✨Amazing✨ skills. My favorite memory of her was when she tried to correct someone right after the instructor lectured a girl for falling out of a turn, the instructor, with no patience after the lecture, told the girl what she was doing wrong with her turns. The look she had was priceless.
@@glittergamer765 there’s this girl that copy’s me and is jealous I’m in a higher dance level so she tries to aggravate me she is so annoying just following my every move
@@Liv-tb1gb Geez, they'd rather try tearing someone else down instead of admiring and putting in the hard work you did for your skills, smh. The girl from my class tried to get my part in a dance by trying to point out whenever I messed up, and no one was pleased. I'm so glad she left.

When teachers force injuries so their students are more flexible/better turnout. Bonus points if they use archaic stretching techniques and no mobility work
biggest ick is when people tell me to "just turnout" 😐😐 its not that easy lmao
Nah cause mine is when some of the younger kids act injured for our contemporary class because she’s the “nicest” teacher and they basically take advantage of her by saying they’re injured every. Time. Yes somehow by the next day, they’re always fine.
Mine would be when I'm the only person stretching properly & they tell me to hurry up- bro they're not even doing it 😭
You can’t hurry stretching lmao that’s literally what stretching IS. Like okay lemme tense up and “hurry” through relaxing my muscles… wait..
@@alexia3552 fr lol, but we stretch our legs & we're meant to do it twice on each side & do 30 seconds each time but the others literally do 5 seconds-
No one's talking about that HEADPIECE? 😲🤩😍
They all had somebody in mind you could tell
This isn’t necessarily an ick but when it’s 90 degrees outside and the fan isn’t cooling everyone off enough. Then the bars are sweaty and everyone is hot, tired, and just worked their butts off.
WHEN THAT ONE DANCER ALWAYS TRIES TO COVER YOU WHEN DOING CENTER FLOOR, LIKE EXCUSE ME
The second girl! “Just stop!” There was no hesitation in her responses. 🤣
I didn't quite catch what she was saying
When class is almost over and your teacher makes the class do changements for the last like 25-20 minutes of class just “because” 😭
when costumes itch especially the skirts BOOOO
My ick is when teachers don’t take injuries seriously or act like making mistakes aren’t human. My ✨lovely✨ teachers.. I’ll just talk about one incident or else this would be a while.
I fell at dance not too long ago and ended up having to leave early to go to the doctors. Found out I broke my foot in two places as well as screwed up my ankle (I sprained it). How did my teachers react? Well.. first thing they said was that I was expected to still attend class. Okay yeah, I can do that. Except that I still had to dance on it! So not only was I dancing in a boot, I was expected to be healed at certain time, plus know all my dances (that we were literally learning the day I broke my foot) and dance them 101% when cleared from my boot.
So yeah.. I had an appointment after 6 weeks to check my healing, got told I’ll have to go the whole 8 weeks, and I had a breakdown. I had dance after being told that and I had a panic attack. I was scared, mad at myself, and so upset because I wouldn’t be out of the boot when they expected me to be, I was in pain and didn’t want to keep dancing on my BROKEN foot, I didn’t know every dance of mine because the day I broke my foot was the day we were learning 3 dances I was in and I can’t dance right because again.. I’m in a literal heavy freakin’ boot and had no time to learn it because if I’m broken at dance, I’m not magically healed at home. And sorry, I’m gonna rest my foot like I’m supposed to be doing.
Long story short I quit. They weren’t happy but y’know what? I wasn’t happy that they insulted me for something I couldn’t control. Oh, and those 6-8 weeks I was supposed to be in a boot for? Yeah, ended up being more than that. I wonder why.. 🤔
UUUGHH
I HATE that in any job, school, club, etc. at any time, any season, with any injury.
WITH ALL MY SOUL.
Do people seriously expect people to go to work, school, or practice when they just broke an arm or a leg????!!!
Disgusting.
Shame on them !!
Sadly, for the system, work or school is more important than your own health.
You need to report that!
That is appalling. That’s disrespectful to you on a most fundamental human level. The sheer and absolute disrespect for your bodily wellbeing is abhorrent. GOOD FOR YOU FOR QUITTING!! 🎉🎉🎉 celebrate that sht, you live your life for YOU and for no one else! You know what’s good for you, trust your body. ❤
same thing happened to me with cheer & my knee. its still messed up and i ended up having to get surgery on it years after i quit cheer
@@Boxofcare666 to who? the ballet police? lol this behavior is very common in the ballet industry
THAT SECOND GIRL IS SOOOOO PRETTY WHAT
“Like that’s so annoying, it’s disgusting, like just stop”
I love her omg 😭
when doing center work and ppl dont know how to find a spot that's not taken and just block someone else
All of these are sooo true but the one of mine is when your foot is sweaty in your pointe shoe and then it’s just soooooo uncomfortable
And there's no way to fix it without taking the whole shoe off 😭💀
And you're wearing silicon toepads under your tights💀
Wtf how do you even dance with sweaty feet on slippery toe pads?!! 😮
When people in class ask to use the bathroom to get out of their least favorite part like adajio 😭
Some of these were very specific😂❤
WHEN SOMEONE LITERALLY TAKES MY BARRE SPOTTTT😤
REAL
For me it’s when they don’t wash their leotards 😭
Ewwwwww or their tights honestly 😭 like why just why
Also excessive perfume gives me the ick because you can’t mask must under perfume and piling it on isn’t gonna help once you become musty 💀
**shudders** Tell me about it. I always hand washed mine after classes/rehearsals, and let them air dry (I owned at least three leotards and three or four tights), would rotate them throughout the week.
I would say something. That's like assaulting the nose. Ew 😂
My ick is when we’re getting ready to do choreography and there’s that one kid who won’t stop talking and we have to do 120 jumping jacks. Then they laugh and we do 120 more
when someone dances everywhere, like just takes up a ton of space when dancing
"When ppl don't know how to wear deodorant-" literally SO realllll
As a gymnast, I understood the feet are sickle part!!! We have it too and it’s true it’s sooo annoying
My ballet ick is when teachers choose their favorites.
Here is a story!-
So when I was dancing g in professional ballet, I sometimes felt sick, or hurt my self(like a spraind ankle). I just brushed it off, thinking it was nothing, but then we have my teacher, and her favorite student. And when I meen it was her favorite, I mean it. She basically teated her as her golden child, or an angel. When the student looked a bit green, but was completely okay, she went like " Are tou okay sweet??? You look sick. Go home and rest.", but when I looked sick, or was actually sick, she didn't even care, like she saw me and was like " Hey, stop slacking, just drink some water. Now get back." And I was like "what the duck?". I also once spraind my ankle, but was still dancing, and guess what, my teacher didn't even bet an eye, or felt that she has to understand, I can't dance that good now, I have a spraind ankel. Oh and let's not talk about the costumes, she would give the best ones to her students, while I got a one that was almost broken, but just didn't say anything, cause I have to be respectful and everything, and I was. So let's say it wasn't a good experience, and after 3 years of pain and suffering, I quit ballet, and now I'm doing contemporary dances that I enjoy a lot.
After a while the teacher got suspended from teaching, or something like that. But yeah that is my biggest ick in ballet dancing.
When people put their thumbs on the under side of the bar and hold it like a Lego figurine…ALL. FINGERS. ON. THE. BAR. Y’ALL
Ballet ick is when the barre work isn’t intense enough to warm up but they want stretches after a combination. That has happened. I need to be destroyed before I attempt to stretch. 😂
Dance divas/prima-donnas. I’ve understudied for so many of them. The plus side is if they quit in a huff or get fired and I get to take their role for the rest of the season.
the across the floor one is so real😭✋
Mine is probably doing the splits in the middle of class. Theres so many kids that just jump into the splits when doing a ron de jambe or something, your here to learn not show off.
And then they get mad at _you_ for tripping over _them_ .
I do that but I don’t want to show off at all. I just want to stretch to be properly warmed up for grand pas de chauts or something
Eva, pretty please🤗 I' d love you to ask the dancers if hair+make up and basic sewing is a subject in their academy like in most of the russian schools. Their buns and class hair styles (like the first girl😍) are always soooooo _on pointe_ that this 48yo soviet ex ballerina can' t stop wondering. Many many thanks in advanced. 🧛🏻♀️🩰🖤 #babyhairs
Okthis is late but I’m here to tell you that most American ballet academies do not teach any of that :/ I didn’t even know Russian ones did, but that’s pretty neat! Usually the girls here learn from their moms when they’re really young, or they teach one another. The director (+ costume designers if it’s a larger show) will have a certain way they want it and they usually expect you to just figure it out lol, they will certainly let you know if you did it wrong 😅 These girls are only so good because they’ve probably been doing it since they were very young! practice makes perfect as we all know
I still can’t sew to this day, I’d have to get someone to help me. Fortunately our dance/theater companies had seamstresses who would help us, I’d give them some extra cash for helping me with it. I’m all thumbs. 😅
The injured one though. I'm not a dancer, I did a musical once in school. Towards the end of 2 weeks of rehearsals, I could feel like my voice was gonna give. So I told the director I wanted to save my voice for the performance. The director was completely understanding and basically let me lip synch for the last couple rehearsals.
yeah, that happened to a friend of mine. but how was the show?
It’s the “last 2 threads hanging on, let me not use it up for no reason”. It looks like you’re being lazy to the uneducated observer but it’s the math of a nearly broken body
When u use satin ribbons bcs those are the ones given at ur studio 😭😭😭
The a la seconde arabesque to get it up higher. Fake extensions in general. Yes to sickled feet, and also pointe dancing that’s way over the box, so much that she’s dancing on her toe joints now.
My ballet ick (And sports ick in general) is when I overheat and my face is literally like a beet red faucet. I'm not out of breath. I'm not struggling. It's just my face. And people ask me if I'm ok, and I say "Oh yeah, no worries. This is just something that's happening right now."
I literally run a 5am 5k every morning to train my face to settle down.
Dude, as someone with rosacea, I FEEL YOU. I’d turn so deep red that I was almost purple from my hairline to my chin, and I felt completely fine, it’s just that every single tiny capillary in my face was dilated, and the rosacea gave me like 5x more capillaries than other people because I’m a ✨mutant✨ don’t look at me lmao
Happy Nutcracker season!
My biggest ick is when the teacher is upset because the dance wasn't good, and some student says "i understand" and then implies that I was the one who messed up when it was them who did it wrong.
the bad, smelly costumes one is so real
My teacher calls sickled feet “nightmare fuel”
They are nightmare fuel!
I wonder if steaming costumes with white vinegar could remove that smell????
Will never wear stretch ribbons👍🏼 satin allll the way
Could I ask why? I’ve always been told to stick with stretch ribbons is it just a preference? 😅
@@charitywilliams7505It's just a preference. My teachers at my old school were against stretch ribbons as they give less ankle support, but it's up to the dancer really how much support they want/need.
Y'all I could never with elastic ribbons 😭
I always have to tie mine just exactly right or I have to fix them until they are right I can't even imagine having to readjust elastics every time I move 💀
my teachers make us use satin ribbons 😭
Yesss I love my satin ribbons. It’s what my teachers have me use and I love the way they look and feel. Aren’t they they the original ribbon anyway??
Not me having sickles feet 🫣😳😵💫
Wonderful talented young people
When teachers put young dancers that are clearly not ready for pointe work yet in pointe shoes. Happened to me, now I've got chronic injuries, and I'm seeing young girls in my own studio going through that as well
Also, some dancers are not equipped to be teachers. There's a reason people go to classes to learn how to teach

What is a sickled foot?

Exactly! And then they say they know everything about ballet. Like, obviously, you don't.
It’s funny watching these because they are so real to these dancers and you know they have someone in mind.😂 And by the comments, there are some great stories relating to these issues plus a few that weren’t mentioned. I love this channel and the content! Thank you! 🫶

Just an honest question... what do you/dancer's do during their periods, while having to wear thin tights, thin leotards etc... there's no place to hide a pad... do you all use tampons, or get that time off? Do you take medicine to stop or lighten your cycles (asking as a woman that has extremely heavy cycles/flow) or do you just hope for the best that as your raising your legs, doing splits etc... that you aren't leaking anywhere? I wonder the same for gymnasts and ice skaters as well. Sorry if this is TMI, but it's a real and honest question, because periods happen... so, how do you beautiful, graceful ladies deal with all the pain, stink & mess? I adore ballet, gymnastics & ice skating! ❤️
@@SurvivorOfChildhoodTraumaTampons. Plus a lot have light periods due to low body fat, but that's not everyone. When I was younger we were allowed to wear black tights or shorts on our periods instead of pink tights, but I never really felt the need to.
@@tatumgross9391 Thank you so much for answering me! I figured that female athletes used tampons, but not everyone can wear tampons. Like me, due to internal damage I sustained as a child (through sexual abuse) I can't wear tampons. Anyway, it's good that there is the option for shorts or black tights etc. I would have loved to be a graceful dancer/gymnast, but I am not graceful, nor steady, nor do I have a sense of balance... lol 😵💫
@@SurvivorOfChildhoodTraumaI have heard of people taking the pill to basically stop their period whilst in a show, but yeah for class you can wear shorts, depending on the studio rules.
You don't have to be graceful or have good balance to do ballet! In fact, it would be good to start classes if you wish to improve those things. Ballet is for everyone :)
I keep getting creeped out by how much bodily exposure is _required_ of female dancers. I’m here to do a sport, not give you a free burlesque show
My ballet iks are when people are saposed to point there foot on an arabesque and they flex it 😩

okay but my ankle does actually hurt so freaking bad and I can barely dance and then go up and do my solo and I have to put on a smile and pretend everything's fine.
Sorry, but I will always do pirouettes before barre. It gets me in ballet mode 🤷♀️
How. Can I be you
That little girl is so cute 🥰
I LOVE U, TESSA
This is absolutely bizarre to me…. I graduated from Vaganova in the 90’s, I danced with the corps de ballet for a year, and was accepted by the Mariinsky. I have always used matte satin ribbons… and all of the professional dancers that I’ve ever danced with and known in my life, have all used some form of satin ribbon for the most part. I use some elastics and flexors as needed. The other thing is that as professional dancers were all sweaty, and it’s not something that everyone really complains about because we’re all working really hard, and it’s just part of it. I was going through 3-4 pairs of pointe shoes a week… and by the time I was done making them exactly how I wanted them to be, they looked awful… but all of our shoes looked awful LOL. The only time our shoes ever looked pristine was during a performance. Where i come from, people are dedicated… their working so hard and sacrificing so much, and the respect between us if there, even though things can be petty sometimes.
the last guy’s ick = abby lee miller’s ick lol
Sickles. Showing your bows. Turns/jumps before barre. Booty shorts (really in general but especially without tights). Hand/arm flourishes from non-principals (you haven't earned it yet, just keep your line!).

Hey I always wondered about ballet dancers. It’s si good to see they’re just normal regular ol’ Americans, but with a gift. ❤❤
I hate it when my leg touches my tutu in like a pirouette or pose.
My biggest ick is when people mark literally everything, leaps, turns, tricks, hell even kicks. Like I get marking it every once in a while, but sometimes it’s to the point where they aren’t even trying, so what’s the purpose of being there?
Iiii'm hearing Tessa SO MUCH. I can begin to sweat at the drop of a hat. And I run HOT because I have hyperthyroidism. Even if I get too cold, my scumbag endocrine system thinks I'm hot.
Tessa, keep slaying.
This definitely caused a sprawl within the academy 😂
My ick is when someone keeps asking if ballet it over like I don’t wanna talk to you I’m trying to learn. And also when people are “injured” so they don’t have to do ballet but is fine for everything else
That ankle girl called out someone specific 😂
My dance idk in general in when people don’t try in class. When I was still competing we had a few really talented dancers who didn’t try in class which was annoying enough but they were already better than everyone else so ok, but one of they’re friends was not on their level and stopped trying as well once she became friends with them (when she first joined the team we were friends and she tried, then the next year she ditched me for them and stopped) and that really annoyed me.
When you’re partnered with a girl who is as tall as you are and struggle to lift her in the air doing a grand jete in a show in the Hollywood bowl.
That selective injury ick was definitely personal 😂
The second to last girls headpiece was so pretty
When someone brags about how good they are but all they have is flexibility, no technique, no artistry
THE SECOND GIRL IS IN MY ENGLISH CLASS!! I CANT BELIEVE THIS!!
My ballet ick is myself, I get annoyed because I can't do the easiest stuff like, come on, just do it!
when people dont warm up without warm ups like they are warming up in their leotard and tights
That ankle one was definitely directed towards someone specific 😅
They're ALL like, "OH mah Ghaaad girl let me tell you!!!!!".
😂😂😂😭
I told my brother that I don't like sickled feet, and now he sickles his feet every time he sees me.
The across the floor one is so truee
When people do pirouettes like all over the place. Like your leg should not be hitting mine
When people don’t know the names of the steps and combinations like one time a girl in my class said “ *WhAt’S port De bras?*”
