- Cycling the world - Europe: episode 86 - Camino de Santiago by bike
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the French village where the Camino de Santiago (known in English as Way of St James) officially starts. It’s only one of the several routes that leads to Santiago de Compostela however this is the most famous way to get to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great at the city’s main cathedral. It’s also known as the French Way. I got to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port a few hours after my action cam was stolen in Biarritz, a ride of about 60Km under constant pissing rain mostly uphill. The rain surely didn’t cheer me and once I got to the village, I was overwhelmed by the amount of people, walkers, tourists, and rain. In a terrible mood I decided I could just as well continue and start the Camino de Santiago right away, aiming to get to Roncesvalles on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees before night. Another 25Km climb. That’s pretty much how I started my Camino: wet, miserable, and feeling sorry for myself. Mood and weather improved the following day.

Excellent video. A pleasure to watch, thank you. Did this route in 2016. Hoping to do it again, summer 2024. Thanks for a boost of inspiration.
Thank you Nigel, glad you liked it. CZcams is not great to link videos on a serie but I republished all the French Way episodes into one if you're interested in watching the whole way: czcams.com/video/uCtHH2tsEmA/video.html
@@DavideTravelli thank you kindly. I most certainly will do. Cheers. Safe and happy travels fella.
First time subscriber here. What bike did you use? I am planning to bring my gravel bike to the camino next year.
Welcome aboard Imond! I have been using this bike czcams.com/video/q9oT3k0QTW0/video.html and this is the last setup I'm using in Europe: czcams.com/video/V71dbCYwtuw/video.html
The camino frances is not a very demanding trail so a gravel bike with some wide tires is gonna be fun. 👊
Great video! Planning to do it next year with my wife. Did you find that you would prefer suspension on this trail? We are considering doing it on hard tail mountain bikes.
Hey Christopher! I wouldnt worry too much just do it with the bikes you have. It's a very short journey if you only do the Camino.
Hi,
great video!
How many kilometers did you do per day?
Thank you Josip! It's been a while not sure I remember correctly, also some days were pretty short because I was meeting friends. If you're planning to do the Camino by bike following the trail not paved road, I think in average you can do 100Km a day fairly easily, maybe the first day less but other days longer. If you want to socialise with people, spend the nights at the albergues and enjoy more budget around 70/80Km per day.
Also I republished all the videos in one, maybe it's convinient czcams.com/video/uCtHH2tsEmA/video.html
Thank you very much, keep going 💪🏻
@@josipcvitkovic8361 Cheers!
Can i ask you something. Is the french route doable on a single speed bicycle? and have you done it the other routes via portugal and the north way ? are they doable via single speed bike.
Hiya! I did part of the Portuguese way and it's meh. To be honest I have no idea if it's possible to do it single speed or not because I never travelled with a single speed bike. I never even used one except when I was younger and racing in velodromes. There are lots of short and steep climbs. There are a few longer climbs as well.
I have done this route on a single speed, 11speed. Cassette, 11, 46, chainring, 30t.
@nigelrobinson8201 I think he really meant a single speed bike not a 1x drivetrain
Again nice job , well done!! 👍👌 I’m wondering how much your bike is weighing though?
Thank you and thank you for the donations! The exact weight I dont know, ignorance is a bliss, but surely it's always too heavy!
Thanks!
Thank you so much Joanne for you kind and generous support!
Great to see mate! I'm heading over to cycle this route in October so any tips are welcome
October? Bring your rain gear I guess 😅
I'm from Manchester so I'm used to riding in constant pissing rain 😂@@DavideTravelli
@AdamPMane you’ll be grand then!
Buenaa esos son los senderos guapos!!!
Que pena lo del incendio
Si que pena pero bueno conocí el señor y terminaos a cervezas. De todo el mal algo bueno sale! 😅
🙋🇦🇷🇦🇷🌿🤝🌿wouh**!

Unexpected dangers of the trail. The turds of pilgrims 😬 How is the dynamo working for you? Are you managing to charge your phone and camera batteries? Very nice video BTW. Sorry to hear about the theft of your camera.
I still havent done a review of the dynamo because I have no tools to measure how much it really charges and in Europe I have little to no use for it as I have a power bank that is much easier to use.
I'm cycling the camino this may did you bring spare tyer.
I wouldn’t bring a spare tire in Europe. Also if you do only the Camino is very short.
Hey! Fantastic vid... Do you know where i can find the mountain bike route i can download??
Hiya! You dont need any route you just need to follow yellow arrows.
@@DavideTravelli cool so you do the same as the walking route!!
Yes I did. Sorry for the late reply but your comments are filtered and marked as possible spam by CZcams. Not sure why.
@@DavideTravelli Thanks mate! how much hike a bike was there?
Almost none
Cuando se hace el Camino de Santiago y ves a otros Peregrinos hay que decir BUEN CAMINO.
Why is it called the French way
I think it's because it starts in France
