Racing Around a Parking Lot While Reviewing a 2020 Toyota Corolla

  • I just really wanted a reason to abuse this car in a parking lot, and that's what I did. I do love a cheap economy car, but these have become a bit too expensive to really recommend new. Most of this review is meant to be funny, but there are some good points about the car in here, you just have to find them.
    Oh, and yeah, always wear your seat belt, and this was an empty parking lot on a Sunday, so don't freak out about it.

    A brand new Toyota Corolla LE in that gorgeous Blueprint color is what I want. The exact car in your video. It's actually 21k when you include destination and no one pays full sticker price. Come on Altek, a smart IT tech nerd like you should know that. Using manufacturer rebates (only available on new cars) and negotiating the price down, I plan on knocking 5 grand off the price. Keep in mind that new Toyotas come with 2 years free maintenance, 5 year powertrain warranty, and 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. Also, you cannot buy a 2 year old Corolla for 13k. Carmax, Carvana, and dealerships charge way more than 13k for 2 year old Corollas.

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  Před 4 lety

      I'm seeing a bunch of 2017 and 2018 models going for $10k to $14k on Cargurus.com with varying mileage. That's pretty much where I pulled that number from. If you're looking at dealerships, yeah, they'll gouge you on price. I consider myself an IT geek instead of a nerd, most will argue the semantics with that but I think there's a difference 😀 I definitely wouldn't pay full price for it, so when you consider rebates and negotiations, then it can get more feasible for sure. I would check to see if they have Android Auto or Apple Car play since their "Apps" option wasn't very intuitive or simple to get going. And that would be a good amount of screen real estate for a Waze map. That gas mileage though, it's a thing of beauty.

    • @andrew.woolman7449
      @andrew.woolman7449 Před 4 lety

      @@Altek1 I can explain that. See the 2017 and 2018 Corolla models are part of the previous 11th Corolla generation. 2020 Corolla is the first production year of the brand new 12th Corolla generation. You will notice that the 2017-2018 models look nothing like the 2020 model. The 2020 model has been improved from the ground up and is a far superior vehicle. That's why the used Corolla models of the old generations are being sold so cheap. I can assure you that a two year old used 2020 Corolla will be sold for a higher price.

      Ha, still alive and kicking. I really want to get back into it but time is limited on my end. I often think about what car I want to get into next and I usually lean towards Kia/Genesis because they offer such good warranties. I'd rather spend the premium, commit to a long term purchase that's secure than take a bet on a newer car with all that tech and no warranty. If it wasn't for needing to drive my son around, it would be all old Honda's for the rest of my life since I new car is rarely feasible or justifiable.

    This 2020 Corolla has been completely redesigned compared to older models. The car has been lowered to give it a lower center of gravity. The chassis has been made 60 percent more rigid for superior handling. The cheap torsion beam suspension in old models has been switched out for a premium sporty multi-link independent rear suspension. This improves handling and reduces body roll. The cheaper rear drum brakes have been removed and replaced with more expensive disk brakes in the back and front. That big 8 inch infotainment screen is easy to view and convenient. Fuel economy has been improved.

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  Před 4 lety

      I was harsh on this car to be funny, but I do appreciate info like this. Even from my quick experience though, body roll was excessive and the handling wasn't great. The infortainment screen was unintuitive and didn't offer Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, at least on the entry model, but yes, it is big. The fuel economy was insane, I could pull off 45mpg easy if I was gentle on it. This may have accomplished its goal as an economical car as far as gas mileage, but falls very short of economical for the price. $20k can buy you a lot these days in the used car market, so I simply couldn't recommend this as a new purchase. Thanks for watching!

      I may have my preferences, for instance I don't care for pickup trucks or SUV's, but they're purpose built and if they suite your purpose, then by all means they make sense. But I try to give everything a fair chance. Economy cars can be a ton of fun to drive if you have the space to play with them, and much like pickups and SUV's, they have their purpose. I don't care how much someone loves a V12 Ferrari, you aren't getting almost 50mpg out of it. So I take it for what it is, and I like it. • @Altek1
      @Altek1  Před 4 lety +1

      That's a tough one. I immediately want to say old because my first car was a 90 Corolla and it holds a special place in my heart. It all depends on how you look at it, for cost of ownership and ease of repair, I'll go old all the time. But for safety and piece of mind, you simply have to drive a newer car. If you watch a crash test video of an old car vs a newer car, even by 10 years, it's pretty eye opening that you're driving a death trap in an older car. But there's just something about how those old cars drive that keeps me going back to them.

    • @martins4118
      @martins4118 Před 4 lety +1

      Altek Altek I’m totally with you. I also feel more connected with older cars also I feel they’re better built and easier to work on since they’re simpler. I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima and it still has glass headlight and metal intake manifold. There’s nothing today that can really compare with your 1993 Acura Integra or even your white 1995 integra. However, you’re so right that these old cars aren’t very safe especially if you get into a big accident.

    • @Altek1
      @Altek1  Před 4 lety

      It's funny you say that, I had a 95 Maxima and when I sold it, my mechanic called me an idiot. All he said was it has an external water pump and timing chain, so the expensive bits are easy to change or you won't have to for a long while. I didn't love the look of that car, but it had enough power and served me well. I completely agree, aside from tiny I4 engines that have been shoved in with little room to access much, when you can get access, they're easier to repair. The amount of computer controlled everything is getting out of hands these days.

      That's just the nature of a CVT, it has two pulleys that vary their width based on speed. Versus a normal auto trans that would raise your RPMs in a lower gear, then go to the next once you're at the appropriate speed. If you drive the car like a grandma, it does work effectively to give you the best gas mileage you can get, but I would say they're not tried and true like a standard auto trans so you may see problems down the road if the manufacturer didn't get it right from factory.
