It's been my dream to work at Mckinsey since undergrad, however I had some difficult landing an interview due to low GPA when I graduated from a top tier school engineering program.
I ended up working in a big four consulting firm in a non-strategy consulting role for the past 2 years.
My question is:
1) if i apply to Mckinsey 3 years from now, with 5 years of experience as a mid career pivot, would they still look at the undergraduate GPA from 5 years ago? would I be able to at least land an interview?
2) Does my undergrad GPA follow me forever as a "No" in Mckinsey's screening? Would I need to do an MBA (maybe from a non target school) and show high academic performance even as a mid career pivot in the future?
3) How does Mckinsey see and value non strategy consulting experience from the big four as a background?
4) for someone with 5 years of non strategy consulting experience , what position would i be applying for ( assuming that the pivot is to work in strategy)
5) Any additional tips you might have for me?

Hi Peter, we look at resumes holistically, meaning we do look at academics but that’s not the only factor. If your resume shows great leadership, impact and people skills, and you have some other data points to prove your quantitative skills, I don’t think GPA hurts that much. However, experienced hire count is pretty low compared to school hire so MBA is definitely a good way to pivot.
Non strategy background is not a deal breaker if you have an MBA or a great resume. I have seen quite a few experience hires from non consulting / strategy background.
