  • How to service a mixing desk. Mixer Cleaning. Mixing Desk Service. - With all the knobs removed in the first part you can now get to work so grab a set of screwdrivers and sets of small allen keys and star keys then take it all apart. Remember to take pictures of everything at every step of the way. also take notes on where each ribbon came from and be sure to make it detailed, TIP - always refer to the same edges of the mixing desk when taking notes, i.e. as if you're always looking at the front of it.
Once everything is out, make sure all the insides (PCBs etc) are well out of the way and start wiping things over. I like to do each surface in a few stages so that you are 100% you've cleaned every single part of it. Citrus wipes are great and so is citrus multi purpose cleaner. why citrus? It cuts through the grease and there will be a lot of it as it's a mixing desk and therefore sounds its life getting fingered! use a paintbrush to work the wipes into every crevice. An old guitar pick can be handy for any tight gaps so help remove the build up of anything stuck in there.
Make sure you use good cloths. Cheaper cloths tend to catch on tiny sharp edges leaving fibres everywhere. You don't want that so do it properly and don't rush.
This is a Mackie 24 8 desk which may look like a large format mixing desk but it isn't. Each group of 8 channels come on 1 PCB and the same goes for the master section so it's a simple and easy desk to take apart.

Good honest. Straight-forward presentation. Missing in so many other vids. Love it!

Another great video in this 4 part series. I'd recommend a dedicated allen key screwdriver for the screws rather than the penknife type tool, it will make life a lot easier and faster

Thank you for producing such an excellent video. Both informative and entertaining. I like your tip of using bacteria wipes with a paintbrush. I tend to use Electrolube AFC Antistatic Foam Cleaner. It is great for removing years of cigarette crud that seems to adhere to old electronics.

Fully diggin these Mackie mixer videos...question please, can I use the 1/4inch MAIN OUTPUTS and the XLR MAIN OUTPUTS simultaneously, ? Ie one going to my DAW and the other going into a stereo channel of my ROLAND MX1 mixer for when I am doing a DAWLESS jam ?

Quick question, why not use a socket and ratchet to do the jacks

Watched all the parts to get brave to attack my 32*8. I love them and they've been crucial in getting the courage to start this process these days that I won't need the mixer for a week or so. What I wanted to know is what is the hard part that you mentioned in this one at

Iv pressed every route button the sliders below the bar graphs control the volume but the LED section does nothing I get it on main mix and on the meter bridge above (I'm posh) but don't get anything on the ones 1 through 8 ? I noticed you got them at first all lit. And then they weren't ". On your last video please help. I'm routing wrong I guess lol cheers

Replace any CAPS or OP AMPS while you were in there? All of your INs and OUTs working and all of your sub busses WORKING 100%?

How did you take the pots off? I've an Onyx 1220i that is need of attention and I'm toying with the idea of doing it myself!

  • @thebasementproducer363

When you are taking the PCBs out, is it an all or nothing proposition? Can you take out the Channel Strip PCB's without taking the other boards out? I am having problems with the bus buttons sticking, but I'm not having issues with anything else. Wondering if I can service the mixer without completely disassembling everything.

Brilliant video. I'm just about to start the mammouth task on a Mackie 32:8 - which has a few channel problems. Just out of interest, what is the problem with taking out the master section please? You said in this video that it was "A nightmare"! But you didn't quite explain why this was? Scared shitless now mate!

Why'd you go through the trouble to clean the top with all the knob shafts sticking out in the first video when you cleaned it again while flat and bare?

  • @gabegabrielsen4919

Why not use a nut driver instead of pliers? makes the job much easier.
