  • JFRD responded to a commercial vehicle fire near downtown Jacksonville. Black smoke was visible for miles as the cab of this truck was consumed in fire. Fortunately the driver got out of the vehicle safely.
Although smoke was visible for miles, access to this fire was a bit tricky as the I-10 eastbound lanes to I-95 north split, and there are two different options of travel separate from each other.
As crews approached the scene, multiple vehicles chose to drive past the burning truck with little to no visibility through thick black smoke. This act is dangerous to those drivers as they do not know what is on the other side, also dangerous traveling through such toxic smoke, and dangerous for first responders as they are not well protected on the other side.
After the truck was extinguished, the hazmat team was called to pump off the remaining diesel fuel in the saddle tank. The top half of the saddle tank melted in the extreme heat of the fire.
City BIO was called to check the water run off to protect the environment.
There were no injuries due to this fire...the driver got out and got a safe distance from the vehicle and away from the traffic. The contents of the truck were none hazardous materials and the truck was opened up and hosed down.
    Units responding:
    Fire 1 & 4
    Engines 10, 5, and 7
    Ladders 1 and 10
    Rescue 10
    Squad 14
    Hazmat 7
    Tanker 57
    Training 10

I like listening to them communicating with each other, knowing exactly what needs to be done, knowing where to place each engine and working together calmly so no one gets hurt and they get it done as a team. My cousin was an EMS Tech and Firefighter for Waco,Tx FD and told me how things get done. Thank you all and May Our lord Bless you all and keeps you safe.

Any vehicle that’s made with resin-coated fiberglass is a nightmare to extinguish, plus they burn hot. Kudos to the firefighters who put their lives on the line for any fire, especially tractor-trailers. Question: Why would anyone drive through black smoke, not knowing the extent of the fire? Overwhelmingly stupid. Could also melt the plastic pannels off of a car. I’ve seen haz-mat tankers drive by fires such as these…kinda scary! Another great video! Had to be hot as hell even at your proximity.

Getting it out wasn't really an issue, getting to it was...I am shocked how many drove through it blindly and had to stay clear as to not get hit...it did get a little warm.

Yep, as soon as I saw the red pallets and he said Taco Bell I knew it was from our GPI plant/warehouse. They are just cardboard food trays. No biggie, we have a lot more in stock to replace this load. Any amount of smoke or water damage renders the entire load trash. So now if I see a rush on this product, I'll know why. As we do not load container boxes at our facility, I assume this was transloaded at another warehouse for export to Taco Bell restaurants outside of the U.S.

@@thejfrd2490 - It's just strange that since the advent of all this emissions control equipment on today's diesel engines, there has been a massive increase of heavy truck fires. Between that and electric vehicle fires, I imagine most fire departments across the country stay pretty occupied chasing all this new technology designed failures.

No professional fire department, or fire officer would attack that fire without first determining what the cargo is. That’s why they make binoculars. Stay back and make an assessment. Not to mention most of them are not wearing breathing apparatus.
