As a drummer, you must listen to "Rosanna" so you can experience the Porcaro Shuffle.
THIS!
Rosanna and Hold The Line were huge hits for Toto as well ❤️
I’ll Supply the Love is another great from them.
Nah
Toto "Hold the line" must be cranked to 11.
I had an amazing chance meeting with Jeff Porcaro, the drummer in Orlando, Fl at Disney World. He was on vacation with his wife. What a great guy!!!!!!!! Very, very nice, and talkative. We talked about Boz Scaggs, Toto, and Pete Townsend for like 15 min...he thanked me for being a music fan...just a real treasure. We miss you big guy!! RIP Jeff
Toto members were session guys originally. Quincy Jones used several of them on Thriller because they were such pros.
Jeff Porcaro on drum was the leader of Toto.....& perhaps the G.O.A.T session drummer. They say he played on over 1200 tracks all by the time we sadly lost him from a heart-attack at the age of 36. He was legendary for 1 or 2 takes. They called him The Drum-Doctor. And if he felt an artist or band didn't require his services or were dragging their heels in the studio he would say: 'I'm just going out to make a phone-call.' And would not return unless they had their shit together. A true legend and a gentleman too.
When David Paich wrote the song, he said that it came to him almost complete that it was a level above his pay grade or talent. He said the song was about man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He had watched a documentary about the suffering in Africa. He said that the images just wouldn't leave his head, so thus the song. Something bigger than him aided him in writing the song.
Even my teenagers love this song!!!
It's keys. The Toto guys were prodigies and A-list session guys (by the time they were 18 years old - they were early and mid 20s when they did this tune) and Yamaha always made sure to get their newest synths to David Paich and Steve Porcaro. These were some of the first "world instrument" synth patches ever recorded.
"Toto" also did a beautiful ballad, "I'll Be Over You", that really shows off their vocals.
Toto was the band for Boz Sksggs. I really think you will like him. I hear a jazz sound in Lowdown.
Jeff Porcaro was a phenomenal drummer - he played on many of the popular songs. He had his own signature.
Watching the videos of Toto’s live tour with Leland Sklar on bass and Steve Lukather on lead guitar and vocals. ......Holy Cow....the talent on the stage is phenomenal
A great group of studio musicians that got together and killed….still killing it with their second year touring and opening up for Journey. They had 3 great singers in this group
Bobby Kimball which is one of the lead singers. He sang lead on Rosanna. Is from my hometown Vinton Louisiana and is a close family friend.
Toto is one of my all time favorite bands! They are incredible musicians! I’ve seen them live 8 times and they are even better in person!
I live in South Africa and it's pouring down outside as I listen to your reaction
Toto - "Hold The Line" video. Great song. Also, Rosanna, Stranger in Town, 99 are great too.
You really need to check out the band Asia, " Heat of the Moment " and " Only Time Will Tell " for instrument content alone, you will love them ❤️
Possibly one of the greatest tunes ever. There is SO much contained in this song............and they just let it all go. It's simply a 'REAL' tune...played and sung from the heart... Thank you so much!
And an extra like for your youtube name. Pleased to meet you, father.
A good solid tune but not in the league of the best.
Check out their Live 1990 Paris Performance of Won’t Hold You Back. It’s the most mesmerizing rendition of that song. A must for a reaction.
Thank you!! Great reaction!
Of course I agree when you mention this great bands, Yes, ELO, Supertramp and Toto. They are all great! And are loved in my country, Chile.
All of them, except from Yes I think, did have shows in Chile. I saw the ELO once, and I was so happy. ELO, Supertramp and Toto were always in my fathers car set of cassetes and cd's :-)
Regards from Chile!
Have you listened to any Little River Band yet? Songs "Cool Change", "Reminiscing", Lonesome Loser", "The Night Owls", " Down on the Border", "Man on Your Mind" among many others are worth checking out.
"Lady"
Seconded or thirded lol
@K Smith I Love them! They had an amazing sound, and definitely belong in the same category with Toto, The Eagles et al.
LRB -> severely underrated!
It's a Long Way There. ..Seriously under played deep cut
Love This! AFRICA is my Fav. TOTO Song!! Like you said, that Melody 🎶 is Smooth!!
"Rosanna" from Toto is a must i think. Not sure which song i like more.
That sound is from marimbas. Not sure what you've already heard from them...but here goes- Georgy Porgy, 99, Hold The Line, Rosanna, Stranger in Town.
this group were formed by Studio musicians of the late 60's and 70's that came in to studios for many artist and played with them to add more musical texture to their songs and then one day formed their own band "Toto."
Jeff Porcaro is listed as one of the best drummers ever. He sure is.
This is why they wrote this song. One of the band members got some really cool piece of electronic equipment that was new back then that had the sound of marimbas and so it sounded African and so he wrote a song so that he could use that sound
Yahama DX7 maybe?
That sound is a kalimba also known as a thumb piano ( african origin)
The percussion and melody lines are smooth and very engaging, but man do the vocals set this song apart! One of Toto's finest production efforts.
Firefall "That's a strange way to tell me you love me", good song!
"White sister" live 25th anniversary. One of a few songs where they actually Rock. Keys and drums will blow you away. These boys could rock!
I love Toto. I have all of their albums. Given your jazz background, you'll probably like all of their songs.
Great song by Toto, for the mysterious and exotic Africa . Tribute!
Toto was a great band. Comprised of studio musicians that were stellar. These guys backed up many bands. Boz Scaggs one example of many.
Still activ. Just been too a toto concert.
Hold THE LINE and ROSANNA (NEXT PLEASE)🤗
Try toto “georgy porgy”
That bass! RIP Mike Porcaro 🔥🙏🏻❤️
Its David Hungate.
The sound you refer to is called a marimba. It is a xylophone type of instrument from africa but is made of wood. As one can hear the wood gives it a warmer, more rounded sound than a modern xylophone. In this recording the sound is produced by an electrionic keyboard.
Love Toto. My favorite by them was their FIRST hit, which happened to be a DISCO hit called "Georgy Porgy". Check it out, great tune. Quite a bit of jazzy elements to it.
Yes, that was the keyboards making that sound...a synthesizer that kind of made it sound like a harpsichord...
Toto did the soundtrack for the movie Dune.
Never tire of this song. Harmonies are great. I believe I read that after watching a news report on tv about the lack of rain and starvation of Africans because of the droughts they wrote this song. I could be wrong.
The band's name comes from the clever usage of a Latin phrase (in toto) ie if a group of people were asked 'how are you all?' In Latin they might answer - we're 'in toto' (totally altogether). Mark Knopfler also grabbed this clever idea ie answering the question 'How are you faring man?' 'No good bud I'm in dire straits' (a position of acute difficulty)..
I played this cassette over and over when it first came out. Couldn't get enough.
Yes we were spoiled from the sixties and seventies to the '80s and '90s
Great musicians! Great band! Great song!
They all started out as studio musicians. They have played on so many other artist albums. Michael Jackson, Boz Scaggs, Alice Cooper, Mikes Davis, Eagles, Michael Mc Donald, Earth, Wind and Fire, Eddie Van Halen. The list goes on!!
The Yamaha DX7 was a new type of synthesizer that emerged at the time. It used frequency modulation to generate the timbres. Actually, phase modulation, but close enough. It could do those type sounds with striking realism.
Sorry it’s Pablo Cruise. Listen to the studio version of Cool love. You’ll add it to your kick back summer ballads you love
This was a MEGA hit back in the early '80s.
I think the instrument you're asking about is a marimba or a xylophone--some wooden, malleted percussion instrument. I can't tell if it's acoustic or a sample on a synth, but that's what i've always thought it was.
I think you may be right. In Wikipedia, the quest musician list includes Joe Pocaro - percussionist, marimba. It does sound slightly processed, but that could have been done in the mix down. I need to hear this over a good set of headphones. It also lists Lenny Castro on congas, shakers, and additional percussion. The standard drum trap set is great, but there are so many other flavors to be had.
Toto pronounced like Dorothy's dog in the Wizard of Oz. But then again maybe you never saw the Wizard of Oz like most people from my generation.
Weezer did a cover of this song with Weird Al Yankovic. Weird Al was dressed up as the lead singer and I do believe he sang lead. I think Weezer did an album covering songs they grew up with, because they have a cover of "Take on Me" by Ah Ha, with that boy from Stranger Things. Which I'm pretty sure you have heard before, because "Take on Me" seems to be in every movie made about the 80's. It's a great song and another iconic music video.
Just like how you would pronounce Dorothy’s dog from the movie The Wizard of Oz! Great song fairly big hit in the day. These guys were lifelong studio musicians before forming their own band!👍🏻❤️☮️✌🏻🎼
I think it was a synth with a marimba part in unison as well. Jeff plays marimba.
This song I NEVER get tired of.
Scrolled a bit below and did not see anyone mention that TOTO was the back-up band for Boz Scaggs on his "Silk Degrees" album. Chod....what an album to review!! The Porcaro brothers broke out on their own shortly after and with others became TOTO. Silk Degrees is a MUST starting with "Lowdown" and you can hear how tight the music is.
Love the huge smile on your face... this song has been doing the same thing to me for almost 40 years.
You should do The Police, song Spirits in a Material World
You could have said do The Police, any song. Severely underrepresented in this "react" video genre.
That is a fabulous song! I concur!
I haven't read all these comments, but as to that instrument, it is a small hand harp that you pluck. a friend of mine brought one back from a trip to African in the early 70's. It was about the size of a half a coconut (it was not however made from a coconut). It had a hollow body with a slot across the front face. then it had 8 or 10 thin metal strips that you could change position to play different tones. you held it like you are texting on an oversized phone, and using your thumbs, you plucked the exposed metal strips.
Really like the channel.
With your love for jazz, highly recommend you react to Toto's "Takin' It Back". Absolutely great, smooth and beautiful.
How i love this song,my top 5 all the time 80's
Most people will suggest Rosanna (it’s probably their second most popular song next to Africa) but some other exceptional songs are I Will Remember from their Tambu album or I’ll Be Over You from their album Fahrenheit. They have a huge catalog!
You have to check out (Toto - Hold the Line) Banger!
This has Always been one of my favorite songs of all time. Our music back in the 70’s and 80s was the best. Great time to be alive and young
remember when vocal harmonies were a thing?
Check out The Fleet Foxes to see a modern band doing harmonies well. The live version of "Mykonos" is a good place to start.
Here's the link. :)

The great jeff porcaro on drums, love this album. Interesting fact he plays drums on pink floyd 'mother'
Cool reaction to a classic
Toe-Toe is right, just like the Little Dog in Wizard of Oz :-)
yeah, it's [toe-toe] like Dorothy's dog in Wizard of Oz
Toto as in the name of Dorothy's dog in The Wizard Of Oz. ;-)
This might be a reach, but Rush has a song written by Neil Peart, dedicated to Geddy's mom's experience during the Holocaust. I would start with "AXS TV: Geddy Lee of Rush talks about his family's Holocaust past" (interview with Dan Rather). To be followed by the song - RUSH 30th anniversary Tour - Red Sector A [HD]
Probably been said but TOTO was the band on MJ’s “Thriller” album
if you like these early and mid 70s rock groups you might also enjoy, Boston.
Pretty pretty. I love this song. Who doesn't live soft verses and a rousing chorus?
Good call on going with the audio only. The graphics for this one make it less awesome, as noted from watching other reactions. Glad you enjoyed it! I knew you’d appreciate all the instruments 👌🏼😎🎶
It's pronounced ("Toe-Toe" like the toes on your feet!) Africa by TOTO is pure FIRE!!! "Rosanna," "Hold The Line" and "Georgie Porgy" are also great songs by TOTO that are "Lit!!!"
Be sure to look up Toto's involvement in Michael Jackson's Thriller album. Toto IV #1 album of 1982, Thriller #1 album of 1983!
Pure Prairie League. “Falling In and Out Of Love/Amie.” Two great songs seamlessly joined together. Please, if you listen, don’t break them up. Absolutely love your reactions and your boundless interest in hearing new bands, singers, songs.
That sound is probably the synth mimicking a steel drum.
Try Cream, Badfinger, The Guess Who, The Tragically Hip.
found another Canadian
Not Canadian but still like them alot.Shame about Gord.
Baby Blue
I love this group. I play this album when working out with weights. Perfect beat and perfect music for it.
Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa also had a song called Huey Newton where it was sampled
Yeah he probably pressed the 'steeldrum' button on the synthesizer.
React to "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls. It's my favorite 80s song.
You would like REO Speedwagon - Take it on the run, or Keep on Loving You ❤️ popular at the same time, yacht rock right there ❤️
This.☝️ Most of the other bands recommended don't really vibe with Toto
But REO or Doobie Brothers or steely Dan... Yes
The 1st song that grabbed me by Toto was Rosanna
Africa. The last place with a soul. ♥️
On my playlist.
The instrument is a wooden African percussion xylophone.
Weezer did a cover of this recently.
"Roseanna" has GOT to be next! You talk about instruments and a variety of styles in ONE song??!!
This is a great reaction... you were into it the first beat in . it looked like the song was taking you some place that made you really happy. Thank you for your reaction here . I look forward to more .
When I take the boat out this is one of the songs that always on my Playlist.
Also southern cross by Crosby Sitlls and Nash.
Like the wooden xylophone.....I used to play it in school
If you like this groove I would listen to Mushanga.. deep track but still has the strong groove like Africa.
I'm always going to rep my fav Canadian bands, but, love the range of tunes coming up. Always loved this one - had it on my walkman. ;)
You are the flower is an underrated great somg by them!
Anyone that can get Kilamanjaro, Olympus, and Serrangetti in one line has my respect. Forgive my spelling.
You're gonna need a much bigger bubble mate coz you aint seen nuffing yet!
SO many bands of such high quality and amazing depth from the 60's and 70's.
You haven't scratched the surface yet as i'm sure other 'ol bastards like me would agree.
Hell of a journey you're going on,trust me.
You gotta hear ZOOM CLUB by BUDGIE. Amazing 70's tune!!!
