- After two failed Approach in Manizales, due bad weather conditions, we decide go to this alternative airport.
Matecaña International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional de Matecaña) (IATA: PEI, ICAO: SKPE) is an airport located in the city of Pereira, Colombia. It connects the Risaralda department of Colombia. It also serves the cities of Armenia, Cartago, and Manizales in emergency situations.
The airport was built in 1945, and the runway was expanded to its current length between 1966 and 1968. It has one cargo ramp built in 1978. The terminal consists of a departures and an arrivals level, with two jetways attached to it. The city of Pereira owns and manages the terminal building, while the operations are in charge of Aerocivil. On average, there are 25 daily commercial operations.

Después de Medellín, Pereira es la mejor ciudad para vivir.

Wow... every plane landings I have seen from Colombia from various airports makes me think everywhere in Colombia is just gorgeous. I'm sure there are some bad places like everywhere, but these videos are awesome. And the women... no need to say anything... we all know...

I grew up in Pereira and let me tell you it’s a beautiful place, it’s the first time I’m seeing the airport from this angle and it’s CRAZY! A couple of years ago they expanded the runway a little and I witnessed the process. Thank you so much for posting this awesome perspective of our beautiful airport!

This airport was actually built by the city's own citizens! They wanted it's City to have an airport so what they did? They built it themselves!

Es la sexta ciudad en importancia y es la ciudad más poblada del Eje Cafetero y la 2a. del occidente después de Cali y la 2a. de la región paisa después de Medellín, ambas están a unos 200 km.

I've flown into (and out of) Pereira several times over the last few years - the scenery on approach never ceases to amaze me.
It also looks quite something from the streets around it (Avenida 30 de Agosto in particular).
Y lo mas lindo de todo esto es que pereira cada vez esta mas linda y con más cosas nuevas , y además con la remodelación de este aéreo puerto como uno internacional no es para mas , amo pereira cada vez me sorprende mas...
Mi padre tenía 7 años cuando fue a la inauguración, y contaba que la gente entró en pánico cuando aterrizó el primer avión en Pereira. Pero solo fue que se estacionara y apagara los motores para que el pánico se transformara en asombro ante tal maravilla de la tecnología.
I lived there until I was 8 years old, left in 1969. I remember seeing Lockheed Constellations stomping at the end of the runway getting their engines warmed up, and I think I was there for the first 737 arrival. This was a big deal because it was the first jet that could land on what was a short runway (as far as I know - I was 8, and the internet wasn't even a twinkle in someone's eye so I couldn't check...). I have only one memory of the day I left, that I cried as we took off. Took me a long time to get over living in Pereira.

It was build in a hill. Colombia and Pereira are know for hill tops and mountains everywhere you look
I really enjoy my flights into and from Matecaña, I love the way they call it an international airport yet when you go to one of the two luggage reclaim belts you can see the guys loading the belts literally on the other side of a wall a few metres away. I look forward to being able to go back :)

Los residentes de esos edificios cercanos al aeropuerto de Pereira deben estar acostumbrados al ruido de los aviones que despegan y aterrizan.
La pista es muy diferente a las habituales, y como alguien escribio aqui, parece la pista de aterrizaje de un porta-aviones.
Que pista tan rara esa, nunca había visto una pista así, montada sobre una plataforma.
Es sobre una explanada y la han decorado en la cabezera,pero es sobre la montaña y la aplanaron...es hermosa.
Asi son los aeropuertos en ciudades montañosas en Colombia
