    Love the chat, Regarding Le Mans, you should look at doing a pilgrimage where you drive your car (Ferrari/Porsche) to the track and camp out at one of the many closed off camp sites (The piston heads one is good by all accounts, I got on one at the Porsche curves in my VW camper, BBQ all weekend and lots to drink, then just chill and walk around the paddock and soak in the atmosphere, music, cars and the sounds they make! I love motor racing and was drawn to WEC/GT racing as i can recognise my favourite cars and the racing is much closer over a longer period where as i believe F1 has lost a lot of it's soul and excitement of racing - now its all about 'managing my tyres'...

    You are right Tony, Team Frikadelli won the Nurburgring 24 hr race in the 296 GT3 Ferrari.

  • @Phoon996
    @Phoon996 Před rokem +2

    Not only did they win LeMans, they won the 24 hours of the Nurburgring Nordschleife with the 296 GT3. Why is the important? Those 2 cars share the same engine as the road going 296 (a car that Tony has on order) meaning that the value of those cars instantly goes up! Any time a team is successful with the current technology in their road cars, they will see a price increase.
    But all of this goes deeper than that as I have a suspicion that Ferrari are using the 499P to develop their understanding of the hybrid systems that will be very similar to those implemented in F1 in 2026, giving them an instant advantage. Also, their car has aero bits that are directly translatable to F1, again giving them a better understanding.
    I think overall its a very smart and big step from Ferrari to go into the Hypercar programme instead of sacking the employees they would have had to in order to meet the current F1 cost caps.
    Or maybe Im completely wrong!

    • @alesksander
      @alesksander Před rokem

      Well u have quite some points that i agree strongly. But aero is not so transferable per say. Unless correlation, CFD code experiments and other metrology/methodologies. And engineering people getting more experience outside F1 tight scope there is not so much direct effect on its programme.

  • @1961Password
    @1961Password Před rokem +2

    In the whole Porsche going electric discussion, remember that they are one of the manufacturers lobbying the German and EU governments for dispensation for synthetic fuels which is more than likely to be granted not least because Ferrari and Lamborghini are doing the same because battery technology will never achieve the sustainable high performance energy density or consistent durability required to compete with ICE's. I understand Tony's point about EV's which stir about as much passion as a disposable domestic appliance.

    Hi Sam and Tony, with regards to Porsches performance at Le Mans I know with the 911’s at least they have been hit with a big Balance Of Performance restriction from the FIA. I’ve got a friend who was racing a 911 in the road to Le Man series and he said the FIA are fully aware of the BOP deficit their receiving and their losing around 15km/h top end speed which down the Mulsane straight is massive.
    I don’t think this is the story with the Hypercar but just something to bare in mind as BOP can be implemented across the race weekend.

    Agree on this years Le Mans race being one of the best races. Going back a bit now but, when Nigel Mansell won the F1 Championship & moved over to win the Indy Car Championship back to back. One of the best races I’ve ever seen was Mansell swapping the lead with Paul Tracy backwards and forwards half a dozen times in the last half dozen laps on a one mile oval - spellbinding racing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    I will say that the 24h of Nürburgring is also flat out from the get to, like honestly, you'd think there are just a couple laps left in the race the way these guys drive. Sam, gotta really attend N24 at some point. And due to the track being narrower and having even more classes (and slower cars) the racing and overtaking is super intense when the GT3s have to fight through the field.

    Guys, the Toyota and Ferraris are LMH class that they make and the Porsche and others are LMdH lemans Daytona hybrids with stock hybrid and chassis they choose from so less bespoke made and lower cost. Porsche has won already this year in IMSA long beach with same car as lemans! But the Toyota and Ferraris are faster out the box and ACO still adjusting BOP so Porsche had problems at lemans but without BOP adjustment Cant fight for outright pace..

    As someone who’s never watched or particularly been interested in Le Mans until last week, I have to say… this new class and the participation of Ferrari has made me an instant fan of it. Probably half the reasoning was because of the the film, and second because of the actual race, and feels way more epic than an F1 race. F1 need to learn from Endurance racing, I.e. less restrictions, drastically different takes on each car.

  • @sagetheowlfatfeathery2083

  • @marcnobel3938
    @marcnobel3938 Před rokem +1

    Porsche just started with this new car now and they are driving in the LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h) class which participates in the LMH (Le Mans Hypercar). LMH races since 2021 with that Rulebook, LMDh started in 2023. What this also means that they are forced to buy a chassis from a manufacturer and just tune it with their Bodywork and Drivetrain. Cars from the LMH class are build by the manufacturer itself. LMDh chooses between Oreca, Dallara or Multimatic and that is it. Cadillac, Acura and Porsche (next year Alpine) drive in this Spec-Class, Toyota, Ferrari and Peugeot in the LMH class. Due to this years BOP the LMH cars had a advantage which made them in average faster. Besides of that LMH cars have more room for development between the seasons as they can build their cars like they want. LMDh not. They can just work within the given borders. - Cadillac was the best from the LMDh field this year, but they also have the experience from more seasons running a similar car in the so called DPI 2.0 Series before. So Porsche was the only team completely new in the Game. For that fact it was already astonishing that they eve won a race that season. The main reason still is that the LMH classed cars had a advantage in performance this year. People forget that the first season of the 919 was also not glorious in Le Mans. They started winning in the second season, also not the first. Additional Note: The Ferrari Win is amazing and yes, it matters a lot! ... even for a Toyota guy 😀

    Just watching this now.
    I guess every individual whose fortune enough to own a Ferrari has a different perspective on what it means to them.
    For me the racing heritage is very important & I feel if it wasn’t for Enzo Ferraris vision as a child (The Enzo Ferrari movie is a must watch) I very much doubt motorsport would exist today.
    I disagree with the guy’s comments about Toyota as that brand that brand has come along way with its GR division.
    Love the way the guy on the right expresses his Le Mans visit, I completely get it, I only followed it it various chunks on my phone as I was out n about but got completely hooked.
    Even woke up at 3.00am to watch a couple of hrs. 😂
    WEC is going from strength to strength & at this rate with a single team (don’t mention the cost cap beach) dominating F1 what’s the point in wasting a Sunday afternoon watch a predictable manipulated mess?

    Toyota was dominant in a class that only Toyota competed in, now they have to actually race against other teams it’s a bit more interesting. Next years Le Mans should be epic.

    Too many classes in the 24 hour races. Difficult to follow which cars are leading etc. bit like cricket, love it or hate it. As difficult to follow😃 don’t have 24 hours to spare and not easy to pop in and out of watching. Not for me.

    Lemans is the single most important race of this year maybe ever. F1 is for people who like go karts. WRC is for people who like off road. WEC/IMSA is for actual road/track car racing. Ferrari winning is massive. It ends the boring era of toyota competing against themselves with exactly 0 competition. It makes the most historical race also one of the hardest races (behind dakkar maybe a handful of races) relevant again.

    It’s a funny thing, and probably not a popular thing to say here. LeMans this year was a good race. But it’s going thats always been better. And who won is neither here nor there for me. I’m at the stage in life where I could treat myself with something exotic but am about as excited by Ferrari and Lamborghini (and hyper cars ) as wearing a Gold suit with matching Cuban heels. In fact parking one and having to get out would feel the same for me. These brands are just OTT now. Maybe I’m just old, but then not too old to afford one. So does my opinion matter ? These cars lost their way mid 90’s when other cars without all the show and noise and gold suits, with space, room, relative comfort, visibility to allow City driving caught up. So for me the cost of wining LeMans ( marketing ) was a waste. Will new customers be forth coming because of LeMans. F1 worked for Mercedes for sure, but Mercedes were a different thing. The loud cold start and trying to get a C63 round a corner was about the worst of it. And you could drive one without Cuban heels. Once Ferrari has EVs with speakers for engine noise then you can add VD to the gold suit.

    2023 24H du Mans is probably the best race I have ever watched. It's a shame (and not) there was so many cars in Hypercars so they barely showed the GT race. Iron Dames almost won in GT (still wondering how they finished fourth) and they are doing very well all season long getting pole positions. They've finished on podiums many times and even won.

    • @Maenfy
      @Maenfy Před rokem

      The Iron Dames haven't won in WEC yet, they did win in ELMS and the Spa 24 though. They also had a brake issue at the end of the race which cost them quite some time.

    So good to see Ferrari win! But I do wonder if the lack of success in F1 the past 3,4 years has meant that they needed to diversify their Motorsport division in order to find some kind of success. And if (Hopefully when) Ferrari get back to winning in F1 will Ferrari withdraw from WEC because “they’re back to their winning ways” in F1. Some food for thought!

    • @Maenfy
      @Maenfy Před rokem

      Well there is a budget limit in F1 now and Ferrari can't fire their staff due to some Italian laws so they had to do something with them which was the Hypercar project. I doubt that will change even if they start winning in F1.

    They are asking for $4 million for a Ferrari Laferrari, that does not mean they are going to get that kind of money.

    Porsche are shit at WEC currently because their car is not a full fat Porsche race car, they took an off the shelf chassis from Penske.

    Porsche got lazy (brand doing really well, lots of praise for road/race cars, etc.). Ferrari did the same for a couple years. Glad to see them back, will make every other manufacturer to step-up their game.

      @v4skunk739 Před rokem

      Nah i think Porsche cut their budget for WEC because the last year they've been looking at F1. I think next year Porsche will concentrate on WEC and build a full fat hyper car with their own chassis instead of getting Penske built spec chassis for cheap. And that Porsche will pull out of looking at F1.

    5:25, in our defense, the people who go to the tail of the dragon *are* the people who love going there. Anyone who has done it immediately realizes it's overhyped nonsense, but the boomer generation and honda civic community really love it for whatever reason. Their unjustifiable love for that strip of road is kind of like British people's love for pretending any given current PM is responsible for the exact whole of the nation's problems.
