Love our fx6. No hits against RED but we love our FX family
Agreed ! I think in terms of small crews and solo work , itâs everything I could ask for
@@boxofchocolates2362 nope, but if you notice Marks thumbnail and B Roll game going up đ đŸ
@@boxofchocolates2362 well Iâm sorry you have that opinion , Iâve known him personally for a bit over a year and havenât had that experience
I've seen a couple of your videos and I dig your style. Clear and to the point and really well put together. Keep creating dude! đ
Thanks !!! I appreciate it đđŸđ„
Feels good to hear that!! Thanks for sharing đđ»
Anytime!!
Great job on the video Kofi! Thanks for making it.
Glad you enjoyed it đ
Love the logical review from a user of both. Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks homie ! More soon n
What an amazing video! In Panama we have a saying for that which is âitâs the shooter, not the bulletâ, which basically means, âgreater equipment does not mean greater resultsâ, which is a great example here đ
Thatâs exactly it man! All these cameras are (amazing) tools , itâs just picking the right one for you !
Great video, makes a lot of sense, thanks for posting it.
Iâm really enjoying your takes on these things man! We run three Sony FX3âs. In our opinion itâs the best camera for the kind of work our company does. Each camera is a tool and different tools are best in different elements. I think people tend to stray away from the fact that cameras are a lot like shovels. You use different kinds of shovels to dig different holes. The same for cameras. One shape or size doesnât fit all.
Nail on the head man , thatâs exactly how I feel about it !
Your channel is crushing it! Love it
Thanks !!
Your best video yet man! Stoked to see you make moves and progress đȘđœđȘđœđȘđœ
Awe thank you ! I appreciate it !
Thanks man !!
Bro! Just found the channel and man I love the content! I'm here to see you win my guy!
Thank you my g ! Hopefully bringing valuable content on a regular âđŸ
Man, I just randomly stumbled on this video looking for something completely different, but I was wanting to eventually get a RED someday but currently using an FX3 which is epically amazing for what I do, which is exactly what you're doing. Fitness industry stuff and the more I looked into things, the more I kept leaning towards staying Sony and going FX6.........but was looking for something completely different with External SSDs trying to see if I can mount the the new Sandisk Transport SSD system to the Ninja V+ and the FX6 or RED cameras and poof.....this video comes along and explained everything else I needed to see on other topics I was previously searching for. One major big thing for me is Sony's mega low light ability for when in Gyms or at Olympia (Hotels) with not so great lighting and run and gun so no set up lights. So the FX3/6 is literally king for that. But hearing all this other stuff in comparison is great to know.
Random Side question though.......if recording ProRes RAW....since the FX6 doesn't have IBIS, if you use Catalyst to use the stabilization in metadata.....does it export it back into the RAW Meta data so that we can convert it and use CDNG still in DR?? Or does it get exported as 422 or 444 and lose the camera raw features in DR?
Great video as I've been hesitating in upgrading my FS7 to an FX6, C70 or Komodo. I'm still on the fence and was leaning towards Komodo as the IQ from the 6K R3D RAW files is stunning (I've been messing with them in Resolve) but you do make some very good points about ND filters & audio. The FX6 being full-frame and having that electronic ND with auto setting sounds like a dream to use. The C70 now has internal RAW so also tempting. Decisions, decisions..
I had the c70 around last year , great camera , niche problem , but canon isnât great at autofocus with dark skinned people ahah
Me and my friend was having this discussion only this morning. Somebody we know has just bought a Komodo and we sat and priced it up and it came way higher than the Sony. Money is a small aspect of filmmaking but... Red is EXPENSIVE! Used the FX6 recently and fell in love with it, i'd love one myself and out of the two, it would be the one i would hire for the projects. Great video! So glad I found you on Twitter
Thats exactly how I feel about it , its 100% not a daily driver for me , because as a solo guy 90% of the time, I have to be able to just take my camera, stuff it in my case and get to business. And HONESTLY the image and dynamic range, if I can get my sky and my subject in , im good man haha
Great video man! I agree wholeheartedly that these are just tools that we use and itâs only a part of the process. Been using the bmpcc 6k pro along with canon r on some small projects. Itâs been a great experience learning the cameras. Been contemplating renting the fx6 for its low light capabilities and some other features I want to use đ Appreciate the video and keep âem coming đđŸđŻđŻđŻ
Course ! Will do ! đ
I loveeee my fx6, you are right though, learning how to use other camera systems could help you fit into different situations on set. But I just love the way the fx6 does things â€ïž
Same here ! I think variety is absolutely the spice of life man to try new things
Always delivering the best đ€đŒđž keep it up dude
You know it my g!
Ahah doing my best đ€đŸ
Banger Kofi. Super informative and a very clean video!

Ahah trying my guy!!
Great video my g! Banger of a drop
All love my guy âđŸđđŸ
The right tool for the right job!
That being said, there really is something magic about the Komodo's Global Shutter image (or the global shutter of any camera). I was actually starting to look for a used digital Bolex right before the Komodo was announced. I guess I am just super sensitive to the motion.
I really think that the global shutter is something you feel, and not really notice. I too pay attention to that stuff
Nice review!
Well said man! I completely agree with you. Iâve used the Komodo numerous times but for what we do it really isnât ideal half the time lol
Iâd say most of the time itâs not an ideal situation , mostly because our sets are like half the time and double the action ahah
I got the fx6 and love it too! Great assessment
Thanks !! I like this camera alot
Very good insight, Kofi. Thank you for posting. I did a head to head test with the Komodo and FX6. I had been shooting heavily with my Sony FS7, so I understand Sony's cameras. What I found is both can produce a beautiful image. The FX6 offers very helpful tools like built-in ND filters. And, like you said, the workflow is a little easier with the Sony. But, for what I do, I really need the global shutter the Komodo features. The main pros of the Komodo to me are the global shutter, nice image overall, .R3D flexibility and exceptional RED customer service. Still, the FX6 is a great choice. Really, just pick the one you like the most and it will do great things for you.
I loved the image out of the Komodo, honestly , but when Iâm working , I canât work as fast, and had to say goodbye (for now đ )
I shot a feature recently on the Komodo. Loved the image. I chose it last minute over my FX6 when we did side by side tests of the RAW images. The blacks on the Komodo are so clean. But I wouldn't use the Komodo as my daily camera. The FX6 is just too versatile and when shooting internally, I prefer its image for corporate and doc stuff... especially S-Cinetone. I shoot S-Cinetone anytime I can control the light.
The Komodo blacks are very very clean youâre 100% right , on a feature with crew , this things a beast , doc/interviews/Corp/action id rather the Sony
Thanks for commenting this. Iâm really leaning to FX6. I use Alpha cameras right now but I mostly do corporate and think itâs time to go FX6.
Can REDâs even do e-mount?
do you still shoot in cinetone? i heard slog3 was better for grading but i wanna hear a users opinion
@@andrewschitt6108 I use both , s-log3 is better for grading , but the quick turn around videos . Cinetone is fine !
Props to you for recording this at 6:30am man, dedication!
Ahah only thing that helps me talk slower
Stunning video
Thanks !!
great video Kofi!
Thanks!!
Great video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
great video! we love our fx6 and fx9
I hope they make the menu system on the fx9 a little easier because thats my next investment :D
Awesome video. These were all the same reason why I chose the fx6 over the Komodo. Thanks for the confirmation đ
Good choice! Haha I missed My FX6 for a whole month while it was gone ahah
Thanks for the video, appreciate your analysis !
I am shooting small documentaries on the A7SIII, i was thinking upgrading for a movie project on 2023, but i was hesitating between a RED Camera ( Komodo or Raptor) ou the FX6.
Thanks !
I saw Steve Cook in one of your shots! Awesome man.
Yeah I did a Gymshark commercial earlier this year!
Very good,..very good!
Subscribed⊠youâre very relatable
âđŸ
I think workflow matters a lot. Cameras these days are all catching up on terms of image quality but ease of use, and camera comfortability matters a lot.
Internal NDs is just so crazy to let go of once you have it.
Plus Sony is killing it in terms of glass. So many options to buy and adapt, hard not to notice.
Iâm just doing it as a hobby but I love hearing about working video/ cinematographers opinions on cameras. My enthusiast heart wants a red Komodo but I know my brain will go for a A7IV. I just want to get out and shoot, an not worry about setup as hybrid shooter.
I left canon because of the 30 min record limit but Iâm sure in a few years I might go back once âcheaper camerasâ in their line adds that ability. I like the color science and look of the red / canon cameras.
But Sony was my first love in terms of potential.
Anyways Im looking forward to your next upload!
I actually had canon for a while , but it wasnât for me either and was a means to an end ( my sonys broke early pandemic) the a7iv is More than fine itâs so nice.
Great review bro. I have an FX3 and use it constantly, but have wanted the FX6 since it came out, just really hard to get. you images look kick ass and I can't tell which is Red or FX6.
Iâd go on BH right this second they just came back in stock my friend !
Chale! The part at the end about how being a slave to one camera system was MINT! #Subscribed
Thank you đđŸ đŹđ
i agree with you. about camera switching I use multiple cameras
Unless Sony be handing me a cheque, Iâll use whatever tool it is for the job
Spot on. Im filming on the C70 and the R5C.. komodo was my dream camera, but not the one i needed for the work that is gonna pay my rent :P
Exactly my point , great to think about , but unless all my gigs are paying Red Komodo money , no thank you lol
Ahaa my thoughts exactly !
I use the Sony FX6. I think itâs a great all around camera! For any type of job.
I agree!
As long as I don't make a hollywood movie with the crew size and everything the FX6 is all I need.
That makes sense !!
I was on the fence with Sony and Canon. Shoot something interesting and expose it correctly... both are great. I decided to go with Canon. 2 C70's and the R5c. I love gear but I think I'm good for a long while. Great video. I still like to hear opinions about other gear makers.
I actually had the c70 just before the fx6 last year (job requirements caused the change) and itâs an amazing camera to use ESPECIALLY with good glass , youâll enjoy it
Great video! I love your real and authentic take on the gear you're using. This video in particular has helped me a lot though, since I'm looking into the Komodo for a few projects. I have an FX3 so I'm also looking into the FX6 and I'm just trying to narrow it down. So this video has helped a lot! I 100% agree that we should have a bit of experience using different camera systems. It's really good to be well rounded and you never know when a client might want you to use a specific camera setup. I still have a few I would love to work with. Thank you for making this video. Cheers!
Thank you ! Honestly LOVE Red image quality , but the minor inconveniences compound to be a non starter for me entirely
@@KofiYeboah Totally agree! I'm personally partial to Sony cameras, but it's mainly because I'm so use to using them and love the results I get from them for most of the work I do. But I love the image quality of the Red too and I'm really excited to checkout the Komodo at some point. Thanks again for all of your insight! Love your channel!
Lesssgo đ„
Bless you bro ! Got more coming soon!
All valid points, I do miss not having internal ND's on the komodo lol
Same sometimes aha
Hey Kofi! Cool vid. What camera did you use to film you? Thanks!
Anything from the FX3 or A7IV at the time !
Yooo what was that duffle bag at the beginning? Great content!
A sachtler dr 3? Longer video on the channel !
I was choosing between a komodo and ursa mini 12K and I went with the ursa mini because it's so much more functional, and image quality isn't far off! Built in ND - check, two XLR - check, no crop in most modes - check, SSD recording - check, and It would have cost me 3500$ to have RED's nd which with very little difference in image quality I simply can't justify.
My first pro Sony cam was the TRV-900 which was a 3 chip DV camera back in 2001. Sadly it was stolen at a wedding shoot! I've been Sony ever since with a minor detour into Canon and back again. Currently I shoot FS5m2 and FX3. Soon to get an FX6 then sell the FS5m2 for the FX30 (being able to use all of the S35 glass)
Thatâs such a good set up man, once you make the jump youâll love it
@@KofiYeboah thanks man. Youâve been a great encouragement and if we ever met in person.. a friend. Btw.. are you natively from Ghana? Or your heritage? Kofi is a Ghanaian name. I met my wife in Ghana!
@@timdanyo898 Iâm born in Canada but I am 100% Ghanaian !!đđŸ thanks man!
@@KofiYeboah awesome! Haha! Yeah.. I lived in Bomso Kumasi for a little bit. I really love the people there. Anyway.. night man.
Yeah ... I also share the opinion FX6 is the golden middle ground between price, feaures, ease of use and functionality. But some ppl use Komodo even for top down shots in their studios :D.
Thatâs a lot of money for top downs but if they got it like that $$$ by all means ahah
I love the Black magic 12k for same price range itâs not a brainer.
Itâs a great camera!
I think everybody should realize, there isnât a bad camera out there. Itâs all about what you like and what you want to spend out there. Just picked up an XH2S and if it wasnât for the RED hype I probably would use the XH2S more. Literally bought the RED as a marketing point. It worked for sure, but I know BlackMagics and C70s etc are just as capable.
Literally every camera looks amazing , I think itâs just form factor and like nuanced features that people can choose , itâs a beautiful thing, kinda wish people didnât make it as big of a deal
@@KofiYeboah like my major gripe with the FX6 which most people wonât think about right off the bat is the menu layout. Especially when doing night shooting. Thereâs no glow up buttons. Thatâs what I like about the C300MKIII but then thereâs other things about that camera I donât love. I think once I get the Kippertie and Mutiny Backplate for the Komodo Iâll be pretty happy.
@@KofiYeboah plus people think itâs a race to gear. You shouldnât be always buying the newest latest and greatest unless itâs important to you. I feel like Iâll be using the Komodo for a very long time. Thereâs no reason for any new cameras other than small personal ones for fun. If I was getting proper clients the only camera Iâd upgrade to is an Arri Mini or Amira, but again it be purely a business move. You get hella rentals for Arri.
Absolutely facts đŻ
Heyo man what support adapter did you use on the bottom of the metabones cine speedbooster for the Komodo?
Honestly I forgot Iâll try to track it down ahah
In order to shoot RED you gotta perform cinema level skills and methods. You will need Davinci which is the industry standard color editing software for RED RAW footage. For the Sony you can use autofocus and use Premier Pro all day long no problem. For a mid level shooter Sony is good. Once you step into the cinema world RED is entry level
đđŸ
Very well said!
There are so many amateurs out there that think, if only I had a RED my productions would get notices and be so much better.
Thatâs the hype thatâs seen in every profession, and unfortunately itâs a procrastination psychosis that prevent people from actually creating and only obsession about gear.
Though I love gear , youâre right, I donât have a problem being a gear head, but you still have to pick tools that youâll actually benefit from using, you could have a Komodo all one would like, but if you got it just for the #shotonred, youâre doing yourself a disservice
I'm with ya but HDMI sucks, glad they allow for an SDI upgrade. I own two komodos though and really want an fx6 so I'm strongly considering adding it to my arsenal. There isn't a perfect camera, different tools for different jobs!
Agreed! I recently went to the KX ( this videos a year and change old) they fixed most things I didnât like in the Komodo so Iâm enjoying it !
is it possible to shot other internal prores codecs like LT with the komodo or only HQ?
I think so !
Hey Kofi. If you were given one camera to choose between fx6 and ronin 4d. What would you choose ?
Both đ
Have you used the blackmagic 6k pro before? Im considering upgrading my lumix G7 to an actual cinema camera, definitely on a budget, any thoughts on that camera abd how it compares to the fx6?
Iâve had a 4K for a while , but I think thatâs a great option , you would lose autofocus though
It's an interesting take actually. As someone who became so extremely reliable on Sony (A7III, A7SIII, A7IV, FX3) I regularly reach for those cameras still as a new Komodo owner. I think I'm trying to balance familiarity with potential and vice versa. I want to learn to use the Komodo like I have my Sony's. I just will always lack the ability to have a few things like 4k 120 on the Siii, sensor stabilization, familiarity with SLog3, etc.
Still can't get over what I can do with a R3D file though. It's like my fuckin mistress that calls to me all day... It's so good. And costs so much to get it to the same level that an A7Siii is out of the box.
Not to mention that you have to switch lens systems. That's the worst part. If Red went with an E mount and just adopted Sony's focus system all of us Sony fanboys would've taken out loans against our mortgages and bought them all up already hahaha. I know someone is reading this thinking, "Yeah.. Yeah, that's me." LOL
Both are amazing cameras.
Honestly I really loved the image from the Komodo, might be the camera that got away⊠but Iâve low key considered buying one and slowly building it for situations where I can afford to shelf my fx6 đđŸ
Red associated with the best cinematographers in the world!?!? Lol đ uhhhh no! That would be Arri!!! Hands down! Bar none! Every award winning film in the history of âeverâ has been shot on Arri.
Well hope you enjoyed the video đ
Would the global shutter on the komodo eliminate panning judder? (If panning faster then the 7sec rule) I know it eliminates the rolling effect but what about the Juddering?
I wonât try to pretend that I knew what that means , but truthfully not sure đ€·đŸââïžđ
How did you get one? The FX6 have been on backorder for so long
Iâm from Canada and I lucked out and got it 10 months ago at a small shop!
Thanks. Did I hear wrong or...did you say that the sony fx6 gives only 10 procent of the Komodo, regarding picture quality?
No like the differnce is 10%
@@KofiYeboah ok,thanks
Iâm an FX6 owner / occasionally I find myself contemplating the Komodo .. is it really 10% better in Image Quality? Thatâs actually pretty substantial
10% is a very subjective not scientifically accurate term meaning there isnât a huge difference
The FX6 is 10 bit compared to the Komodo which is 16 bit no offense but this dude doesnât know what he's talking about in my opinion. i have the Sony a7s 3 which is practically the fx 6 minus a few things. I also own the Komodo and it blows the FX6 out the water. grab the red bro if you want better image quality. Remember the Komodo was created as a crash cam for movies because bigger production cameras were getting ruined...
@@brennen2752 I mean itâs your opinion and thatâs totally okay , different strokes brother
As a sports shooter I would think you would highly prefer the RED's global shutter? But then again, the RED's crop for 4K and inability to shoot 120fps for slow motion shots are deal breakers for many. RED need to make a Komodo like product that addresses these shortcomings, then I'm in.
Nah, the rolling shutter on the fx6 ainât even that bad, in my experience
@@KofiYeboah Perhaps try an experiment, shoot the same athletic scene with both cameras at the same time and do an A/B test.
@@SoCalFreelance if I get my hands on one possibly, personally it wouldnât be enough to sway my choice in either direction if it was better , but hey Iâm go f be interesting
Well presented brother. Again, for the incremental improvements in picture quality, the RED Komodo doesnât seem worth it. âContent Creatorsâ are so hung up on the name RED that they believe itâs going to add credibility to their name or brand. Itâs silly. Folks like you, Mark Bone, JHawk (Sony Users) are proving that fallacy wrong. You guys are producing great content with the tools you have in hand. In your case, the FX6. Are a Canon shooter, Iâm a little jelly. Jk. Iâm not. Canon is a tool that works for me. Blessings.
Ahah actually the first time I used the Komodo , I was with Mark . The thing is the Komodo for a lot of people isnât the every day driver , which I learned very quickly . Itâs great to use !! But if your situation isnât a crew or having the time for the nuances, itâs not your best choice, at least personally
Whats the SDI thing over there?
An isolator
Is this to protect the SDI stuff going on Komodo if not respecting the protocol order? @@KofiYeboah

Do you think it's the fault of the camera, lens or am I doing something wrong?
How does it look for you with G-master lenses?
On native glass youâll get a bit of an edge , but I wouldnât be able to exactly know whatâs wrong tbh !
It was over with for me with no built in nd filter
Itâs a pain , Iâve learned to live with it đ
Excellent perspective. I shoot VIDEOS. I dont shoot SONY. Or Canon. Or RED. Like you say, it's just a tool.
THATS A BARRRR !
Sony variable ND can be copied but not cloned
You can have the same ingredients, but you canât mimic the sauce
Hashtag shot on Alexa
I canât afford to even look at one
Lol just saw this.
also spoke too soon and you found it haha
There's a reason ppl use red, but it honestly seems like you probably didn't know how to use the red fully got frustrated and switched back to what you know. Coming from a Mirrorless camera to a red is a big difference. With a red you really have to learn the camera to get the best image quality possible compared to a mirrorless.
You might not have watched the video, I had no issues with the image quality, objectively the camera working with it takes longer than using an fx6, and with my line of work, that doesnât always fly đ tbh it just sounds like a basic âlearn your camera, redâs the bestâ take, but opinions are opinions
Thereâs no perfect camera. I would buy a Komodo only because itâs a RED and has the REDraw
Youâre absolutely right đđŸ
Different strokes for different folx!!
