Short Ram Air Intake Install - Project Integra

  • How to install a short ram air intake on an Acura Integra. This video walks through the steps required to remove the old air filter and tubing and install the short ram air intake. The particular intake used is an AEM intake for 1994-2001 Acura Integras. This was selected simply because they offered both short ram and cold air intakes, and I wanted to compare them side by side.

    You can make a shorter ram intake by simply putting the filter on the throttle body. :)

    • @LowFlyinOK
      @LowFlyinOK Před 9 lety +14

      In all seriousness, though. I would recommend doing some kind of thermal barrier/break to isolate the filter from the under hood temps and that exhaust manifold.

  • @Eurosport.Automotive
    @Eurosport.Automotive Před 9 lety +29

    All these “hot air intake” comments are baseless.... At a stop it's true that the intake will suck in hot air from the engine bay, but as soon as the car is moving, the underhood temp should drop and the intake will suck in cooler air

    You'll like how it sounds when you drive it... Short ram is helpful at lower RPM ranges... Cold air intake is better for higher RPM ranges... But not safe around deep puddles of water...

      Yeah, my dad used to have the intake in the fender in his Integra and he went through a giant puddle and sucked up water. He then had to wait a few hours to let the engine dry out.

    Just a quick note, a cold are intake or CAI won't have any benefits if you have a turbocharged engine. The turbo will compress the inlet air which causes it to heat up, the intercooler will cool it down again. I know that in theory it is always beter to have colder air in the first place, but in practice the difference is negligible.

    • @8w494
      @8w494 Před 9 lety +5

      Please correct me if I am wrong.
      Air temp without CAI = X1
      Air temp with CAI = X2
      Turbo compression = Y heat increase
      (X1 + Y) > (X2 + Y)

    • @superstarr310
      @superstarr310 Před 9 lety +2

      Not exactly. Lets say you have a block of ice at 0 degrees celcius and you have a cookie at 20 degrees celcius and you put both in a 200 degree oven for 5 seconds. Which will have the most temperature increase. The turbo is the over. While the cold air intake will remain slightly colder the effects are diminished greatly

  • @Olwmatt

    You should unplug the battery or reset the ECU so that your car can read a just or reset learn the new air amount. With out the heat shield around the air filter the air is going to be less dense therefore less power.

    Hi, first off, great videos. I really enjoy the practical performance tests and explanations.The combination of simple explanations and mathematical formulas is accessible and informative. I know the process is to put requests on facebook, but I don't have one. I would be really interested to see a simple performance test comparing ethanol-free gasoline and the 10% ethanol gasoline sold at most gas stations. I think the potential for detrimental effects on engines of using 10% ethanol gasoline is well known, but I wonder about its effect on engine performance. I think this would tie in well with some of the recent videos about Shell gasoline and oil technologies Thanks.

    • @TheFlacker99
      @TheFlacker99 Před 9 lety

      Naah, a stock system has (usually) long piping all over the engine bay to quiet down the engine, and it usually picks up air from inside the bay anyway (AND, that piping will get hot).
      Since this intake (SRI) is shorter it'll allow a short pathway for the air to take. (More air = more power)

      Not saying changing your own oil is a bad thing, I've done it a few times but the cost savings don't really justify the overall opportunity cost, plus you gotta worry about taking the used oil it to a certified place to dispose it, which sometimes is far away(gas $).

    DId you notice any difference in performance? I'm considering buying a SRI for my Mazda2 and I'm not sure if it's worth the money. I'm looking forward to your results!

    I know it's very late but...i had a question about how the air gets into the engine in this setup. In the stock setup the air was sucked in from the resonator i presume? from where does this filter get its air ? thanks in advance :)
