  • Payzee Mahmod was coerced into a marriage when she was only 16. She escaped that marriage and has since exposed the effects of forced marriage on children across the world.
She told us her story and discussed the change in legislation in England and Wales that will raise the legal age of marriage.
Child marriage is often associated with domestic abuse, leaving education early, limited career opportunities, and serious physical and mental health problems. The change honours the Government’s commitment to the pledge made to the United Nations to end child marriage by 2030.

The memory of Banaz's tragic and senseless torture and murder has left an indelible mark on my heart. It's a painful reminder that she should have lived a life full of joy, hope, and promise, but was instead cut short by cruel and senseless violence. I am in awe of their sister Bekhal, who showed extraordinary courage by testifying against their family members - knowing she would spend the rest of her life in witness protection. Payzee's strength and resilience are an inspiration to us all, and I have immense admiration for her. The fact that she, along with other brave women like her, have chosen to stand up against the forces of oppression and speak truth to power is a testament to their unwavering commitment to justice and human dignity. Thank you to Payzee and all those who have fought for change, for their bravery and selflessness have saved lives and brought hope to countless others.

This is why we shouldnt just accept or excuse certain things because they are "cultural." Not every culture is good, and some need to be stigmatised and stopped
