WANT MORE DISTANCE AND SOLID IRONS?

  • Doesn't everyone want more distance and hit solid irons? They sure do. Well, here is a drill you can literally do at home and at the range to widen your swing arc.
    The wider your swing arc, the faster your club will swing. The problem with most golfers is that they contract their arm muscles as the hit the ball which narrows the swing arc. This leads to a chicken wing which loses distance and doesn't allow for solid irons that are compressed on the right trajectory.
    This drill will finally get you used to the feeling of loosening your arms so you get a wider arc. This is a weird feeling when you first do it so you need to do this enough until a wider swing arc feels normal. To do this you need to be doing daily practice swings. Practicing once a week isn't going to cut it.
    So do this drill daily at home. The payoff is more distance with all clubs as well as solid iron shots on the right trajectory. Seems a small price to pay for great golf.

    For anyone who has doubts about buying the course, it's cheaper than a one-hour lesson at your local range. I started golfing 3 months ago, and I'm so glad I found Paul's videos on CZcams. Although his videos are great, the online course is much more structured than tips here and there on YT. I saw immediate improvements in the ways I hit. I started to hook my balls and stopped slicing (or knew how to fix my slice), my balls went further, my club speed increased, and my wrist and hands stopped hurting because I wasn't hitting with my arms anymore. Paul's online course broke things down so simply, whereas 5 lessons with a local coach couldn't before I found Paul's course. Paul taught me how it should feel to swing the club, whereas everybody was just telling me to "find the feeling over time," whatever that meant. Thank you, Paul!

    just wanted to share with you. Paul, I remember getting into golf and struggling with driver, then I found your video of how to hit driver. from then I bought some of your material. I've been bombing my driver ever since I was probably scoring 115- 120
    in the beginning, then I started breaking a hundred and now I'm consistently playing in the '80s high '80s lol but still breaking '90s. The only material that I ever took seriously and actually drilled was yours. so want to thank you for all your awesome content

      So glad you are doing well. Thanks also for your support. I appreciate it. So much fun once you know you are starting to get it. That's a great drop in score. Keep at it. Do the drills daily at home if you can't get to the range. You are on track.

    This is EXACTLY why I refuse to hit from enclosed bays. I went to the range yesterday, it started raining, so I went home INSTEAD of using the enclosed bay.... WHY? Because they make me "Contract" because I feel like I'm indoors. I need *FEEL* *OUTSIDE* in order to really open up.

      I understand this comment...I have 9ft ceilings in my house and 10' in my garage. I feel I'm going to put my club in the ceiling, even though I've fully stretched out and realize I won't. Oh Hello chicken wing...can I get that spicy flavored ha.

      The indoor bays are becoming quit popular with these simulators. Instead of that just do practice swings at home. This is the best way to practice. I keep saying this so I hope people are listening.

    Greg Norman said the first part of your takeaway should be your lead elbow going straight back down the line. I tried this and could definitely feel more tension in the lats. Prevents me from lifting the club straight up too. I struggle with the release though. When I have loose arms I keep chunking it. And my rear heel is off the ground too. I think my upper body is getting ahead of the ball.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety +1

      If you heel is up yet still chucking you still have too much weight on the back toe. Watch:
      czcams.com/video/hAZyQXoIGac/video.html
      Try it. I bet you won't hit it fat.
      Also if you previously had a chicken wing (narrow arc) then you loosen you have a wider arc. So if you put a wider arc in your old swing where is the club going to hit? You will hit behind it because it's a wider arc than the one you have been using. When people see this they quit and go right back to their old swing that doesn't work. So you need to fight through it and keep letting the arms go. Once you get the feeling you fire the lower to learn the new wide arc. I have fixed this countless times in 31+ years. Tee up your ball a finger height and hit 7 irons until mastered.

    Good info. I found if I place the objective back a foot or so this encourages me to finish turning my body towards the target. My left shoulder automatically goes up and back. This may not work for everyone but for me it helps with smoothness and balance. Good luck to all.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      If that works then do it for a while. The problem is the swing is an arc. Dropping it back catches it too early so you will have the tendency to hit the ball right. Be careful.

      Just do it for sure. What do you have to lose? New feeling though so you need to trust it and get used to it. This feels normal to me. If I did a chicken wing that would feel weird. This is the point you need to get to as well.

    I can really relate to what you call a "weird" feeling because I have played a ton of tennis during my adult life - always seeking to improve my game - I would change my grip which felt weird until I practiced and used it so much it didn't. I would change my serve and it would feel weird until it didn't. I am convinced that like most things in life, we have to maintain the discipline to stick to new things we try - they will feel weird until they don't! Thanks, Paul!

    Hi Paul- Another great tip. My problem here is when I start taking my club back, as much as I hope my lead arm
    is straight I believe that I am breaking the arm (bending the elbow). I think it’s affecting my ability to straighten my lead arm at impact. Any tip or video you could offer. Thanks as always. Leon Calgary 🇨🇦

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      You need clarity on this lead arm:
      czcams.com/video/1TiT0C8XF2U/video.html
      If you are doing a chicken wing you are trying to hit which contracts the muscles. They don't contract on their own. You are doing it. So you need to get rid of the thought of hitting. Get use to some new feelings and it will go away.
      Think of the club as a weight and the arms string. The weight set in motion would pull the string out. This would be a great image. The problem is it feels weird so people do right back to what they are comfortable doing plus, if you stretch them out you may hit some fat shots so again, you will go back to your old swing. Become obsessed with this new stretched out feeling. This doesn't feel weird to me because I've done it for a long time. What does feel weird/bad is doing a chicken wing.

    Going to try this because I have lost total confidence in hitting my irons. Nothing goes very far and I can get it at the same distance with an 8 or 5 iron which is very frustrating.. Maybe this will help but I do not think that I have a chicken wing. I tend to scoop the ball rather than compress the ball

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety +1

      By now you should be shooting mid 70's and killing because you have been following me for quite a while. So obviously you are still way way way way way too tight. If you are scooping you are hitting. There needs to be way way way way way more body hitting the ball. So lets get on it. Every day you need to get firing the lower body.

      Forget about where the ball goes and focus on power for a while. Get the power then go back to straightening it out. Watch this video again and focus on her leg drive. Not that you are going to drive your lower this hard but you need to get the lower moving hard and fast:

I’ve been looking for a past video you did where you said an easy way to get the hip turn was to straighten the lead leg at the same time bringing the rear knee up to touch the front knee? Paul, do you have a video on when to start DE-celerating the hands? Apparently the pros reach max hand speed around their trail hip and then the hands slow down from there. What do you think about that? I feel I get more effortless power when I focus on deceleration of the hands before impact so that the energy can then flow into the clubhead.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Před 2 lety

      I wouldn't even be thinking about this. As usual they keep making things way too complicated. Do you think Jack, Byron, Hogan, Tiger etc. thought about decelerating their hands. I think not. I teach powerless arms. In no way do I want you hitting or helping the ball with the hands in the downswing. So other than keeping them powerless I wouldn't want you thinking of anything else. Stay loose and you will hit it amazingly well with minimal effort.

I struggle with the chicken wing for sure so was thinking about just using the sheet how you were using the golf bag but not back off of it. That way I will get instance feedback on if I am fully extending. Do you think this would work? I wasn't sure if this is more of a feeling drill and in practice I should be either swinging completely through the sheet or not touching it at all.
